Summary: Memorable characters with real problems
Review: Delightfully funny, sweet and sad. Spinelli handles a common subject, conformity, in a fresh manner. His 1st person narrator, Les Borlock, is perfect. He is torn by his attraction to Stargirl for her uninhibited ways, generosity and creativity although he knows these very things are what is making her an outcast. And she is taking him down with her.

But, that reduces the story down way to far. His characters become real people. As for Stargirl, Archie the paleontoligist responds to the comment that she is like another species with "On the contrary, she is one of us. Most decidedly. She is us more than we are us. She is, I think, who we really are. Or were." And how true. Even in her weirdness, she reminds me of several of my friends. Stargirl is what you would get if you smooshed my theatrical friend, with my brainy friend, with my friend who always made valentine's cards for her friends and crushes, with my paranormal friend, and then erased the shyness that all of my friends have struggled with all their lives. In a way, the character of Stargirl is an inspiration for boldness. And, once again, I'm reducing this down too far. Spinnelli's "Loyal Order of the Stone Bone" takes this book beyond being a highschool romance story into something more... shall we say cosmic?

Summary: Harold & Maude meets Amelie
Review: Of course, the title of this review could just as well read, "Feed meets the Pied Piper of Hamelin". Trust me, these comparisons aren't that far off once you've read this book. This story is a fairy tale at heart, but that heart is a pure one. In it, a girl with the title's name comes to a very normal high school and (not to put too fine a point on it) turns the place upside down. This is a girl who'll wear a kimono to school one day, and a Victorian wedding dress the next. The narrator (who seems to have no family of his own whatsoever) falls head over heels in love with her. In the end, however, he must choose between her love and the love of his peers (who don't take too kindly to the little strumpet).

The story is very simple in its conception. You know where it's heading long before it does. As for the writing, the prose is lovely but unchallenging. Though the narrator of this book is a Junior in high school, I would have to suggest this book to readers of the younger set. Kids and pre-adolescents. After all, it has a nice little message about being yourself (without actually voicing those exact words) and contains no swearing, violence, or even (heaven forfend) suggested sexuality. Read on a different level, this book is almost a Christian parable. If you read the story with Stargirl as a Jesus-like character, it's not a bad match. She even exchanges a slap to the face for a kiss. Turn the other cheek indeed.

The ending is bittersweet (hence the Pied Piper similarities) but well wrought. As I mentioned before, the narrator seems to serve only as someone for Stargirl to react to and garner reactions from. He doesn't seem to have a home life, or even any parents. His entire existence hinges solely on Stargirl and school. In that context, it is easy to see why he reacts the way he does to both her and them. And certainly the story is unrealistic. As much as I like the ending, it's not particularly believable that a girl as unique as our pretty protagonist would earn the love of others (especially teenage others) through uninhibited actions. I can see this book joining hosts of others on children's bookshelves as beloved. And certainly it won't actually change anyone's mind about treating those different from you with kindness, but it's a pleasant story and a pleasant read.

Summary: Stargirl=My Life
Review: I LOVE STARGIRL! Stargirl has an amazing ora that makes everyone feel like her best friend. I was enchanted by the magic of the ukellele when she sings on my birthday in the cafeteria. Whenever I feel alone and like I have no friends I turn to Stargirl and she helps me get through my day. READ THIS BOOK! READ THIS BOOK! I have a crush on Leo, and the rat made the book. After reading the book I went out to the local pet store and bought a pet rat and named it cinnemin and got a cactus in my backyard. Her stalkerish ways make me delighted. The truth is that without Stargirl I would be noone.

Summary: Star Girl
Review: If you are a girl and you are the ages of about 13-17, then this is the book for you! The book I read was called Star Girl, written by Jerry Spinelli. It was one of the greatest fiction books I have ever read. This srory takes place in Mica, Arizona. Star Girl, the main character, is the "new girl" at Mica High. And as the new girl she is treated differently. But she is also very different then girls in the 10th grade. I would say that Star Girl is a very "bubbly" person. It's funny when she joins cheerleading and and cheers for everyone, and even the other teams! She does other weird stuff like going to peoples funerals that she doesn't even know. Everyone makes fun of her by the way she dresses and acts. Sometimes at lunch, she will get her ukelele out and just start playing it! She changes the way people at her school act and think. She dances when theres no music and laughs when theres no jokes. She makes a good friend named Leo, who is a lot like her in many different ways. He never knows what she is going to do next. He helps her get use to her new life at Mica High. Like most teens her age, she also has a problem with wanting to fit in with the popular crowd. There is always a leader of those kinds of people and in this case her name is Amber. I think I have a lot in common with Star Girl. So this book was great. The author, Jerry Spinelli, keeps you interested the whole time! There was never a boreing chapter in this book. I would recomend all teens to read this book, it gives a good understanding and outlook on how being the "weird new girl" really is. Read it!

Summary: Stargirl and insight
Review: I was drawn to read Stargirl because of the cover; it was different, much like the character of Stargirl. The book interested me, but it was cliche and the events written about in much the same way as other authors. Stargirl, as a character, helped this much, because very rarely to you get to read about a character that cares so much about doing good they cannot comprehend the bad. It was a simple read, being a book made for young adults, and perhaps I expected too much because I've experienced all those turning points when I was in high school, but with the original concept of Stargirl it became more engaging. I would offer this book to anyone looking for a book to read for entertainment and a quick lesson in right versus wrong, real love over fair weather love, and the possibility of having no fear to be themselves.

Summary: StarGirl
Review: Star girl is a book about outsiders. The change one misfit can make in a school, and the effects she has on it. People change, things change, ways change all because of her. I think this book can teach anygiven person a lot about life. She brings so many differnt people together for reasons they never thought they would understand. Categorizing terms disappear in one highschool because of a "geek" who makes them all realize while they're all so differnt they are all so similar at the same time. This is a very good book and I recommend it to anyone.
