Summary: If you teach this book, buy these tapes.
Review: Cisneros reading Cisneros is superb. I have heard other writers read their own material and was thankful that their "voice" was seen and not heard; with Sandra Cisneros, I am thankful that her voice is both written and spoken. To say that my 9th graders "didn't get" the idea of the vignette at first would be an understatement. Hearing the vignettes as read by the author added much to my students' understanding of the style she uses in this work, and in understanding the style, they came to understand the themes.

Summary: Bad Bad Bad
Review: The House on Mango Street is a story about a young girl, Esperanza Cordero, who lives in the rundown Latino section of Chicago. Sandra Cisnero is the author of this highly overrated book. Her writing style and structure do not allow us to connect with the characters or to recognize and type of plot. So many characters are introduced but not explained that it is hard to remember and get them all straight. The vignettes do not seem to connect to one another at all. On example is the vignette about Esperanza's hair, which does not really give us any insight into the life or mind of Esperanza, only tells us about her hair. And by writing in unstructured sentences that do not have any punctuation whatsoever, Cisnero does not enhance the books originality but instead makes it harder fur readers to get through.
I believe that many people gave this book a good review because they thought it was an original way to write, and represented a minority here in the U.S. The problem I have with that is that reviewers should recognize a badly written book when they see one. There are plenty of other good books written about Latino Americans and their lives, so I suggest that you avoid putting yourself through the agony of reading this one.

Summary: House On Mango Street!!
Review: The book House On Mango Street was a book written for herself. Sandra Cisneros wrote this book for the females of this world. I believe that she wants women to have the same thoughts as her, and that will never happen. Cisneros has an evil view of what men are. Does she hate men all together? I think that she is an angery woman all together. This book was a horrible book, and I feel bad for those who have to read this!

Summary: Theme people, theme
Review: You can't criticize a book if you can't understand what you are reading. You must understand the theme, the words between the lines. Some people are better off reading Dr.Seuss.

Summary: Read If Desperate
Review: Read this book when it is the only book left on Earth. This book is truly a work of disaster. The book doesn/t even make sense. Ever dumb chapter feels like a new book. Trust me....Don't Read this book!

Summary: Coming-of-age novel...
Review: Finally! A book about a girl growing up! It's seems like the traditional coming-of-age book is about a boy, on the assumption that it is the same for a girl. Although there can be many similarities, growing up as a girl presents its unique challenges. It's a book every woman should have on her bookshelf.
