Rating: Summary: A must read for every woman! Review: "A smile is a wrinke in the face that should never be removed" This book is a must read for every woman, regardless of age or race, and I guranatee there will be a smile on the reader's face! Every woman can understand this young girls pains, joys, and thoughts as she matures. Cisneros tackles the ever timeless literary elements of gender roles, culture clashes, and assimiliation, while still providing a delightful, and easy to read book. Most readers can relate to the fact the Esperanza's character and ideals develop from those around her and her experiences, much like ours do! I believe that there is at least one chapter, that the reader can relate to and think of their own life! Because of this book, I have a smile on my face that will never be removed!
Rating: Summary: It was a fun and intriguing book, but a little confusing. Review: I enjoyed reading it. It reminded me of how insightful young children are to the world around them. It examined Esperanza's life and the type of community she grew up in. It was a great book, but I was a little confused in the beginning. It was humourous and intriguing.
Rating: Summary: Recommended to All Young Adult Readers Review: The book "The House On Mango Street" was great. The chapters weren't so long, so I didn't get bored. It was more like a collection of short stories than one long story. Each chapter had a whole new and different topic, and these topics made many short stories in the book. It was entertaining and fun to read. At some points ,it was so amusing that I laughed out loud! It also gave an account of a Latina girl growing up in America. I would recommend this book to all young adult readers.
Rating: Summary: Very Unique Review: Most of this book was written poeticly which made me want to read the chapters more than once.Sandra Cisneros used a lot of similies. A lot of the chapters made me have to think about them to understand them. This type of writing made this book unique in a good way. I recommend this book to book lovers of all kinds. If you want a book that is interesting and makes you think, then this is the book for you.
Rating: Summary: great book Review: I truly didn't want to read this book, but I did, because it was required for my English class. I got confused sometimes, because no quotes were used, but then I got used to it. I liked the book, and I felt that it was very well written. It seemed to take the reader through Esperanza's life. This was a great novel because it's reality, and it sho ws how many of us can achieve our dreams, and we don't have to continue any kind of pattern in life that others expect you can't get out of.
Rating: Summary: Review of The House On Mango Street Review: The best parts of Sandra Cisnero's work was the amount of showing she did versus telling. For example, in "Red Clowns," she never directly says that Esperanza is being sexually assaulted. It is only implied through vivid images of "dirty finger nails against my skin, only his sour mouth smell again;" and "he wouldn't let me go;" and finally "He said I love you, Spanish girl, I love you, and pressed his sour mouth to mine." Also, in "My Name" when it seems as though she is telling, she is actually showing: "It is like the number nine. A muddy color;" and "It is the Mexican records my father plays on sunday mornings when he is shaving, songs like sobbing;" and finally "My name is made out of a softer something, like silver..." And a final example Sandra Cisneros showing her imagery is from "What Sally Said." In this chapter, Cisneros does infact say that Sally is hit, but the person who hits her is not until later, revealed. " He never hits my hard;" and "One day, Sally's father catches her with a boy and the next day she doesn't come to school;" and finally "...he just forgot he was her father between the buckle and the belt." The way that Sandra Cisneros uses the magnificent imagery helps the reader be able to relate better to the life of Esperanza.
Rating: Summary: Sandra Cisneros grows tatsy mango's. Review: Sandra Cisneros is an excellent author and has an excellent point of view. She is able to put herself in the life of a young child and writes as if she were speaking back then. In doing this she creates amazing imagery and makes the reader feel as though they are reading a childs diary. Cisneros is able to turn little situations into thought given masterpieces. The point of view makes the story. I like it.
Rating: Summary: The quality of Cisneros's work is enjoyable to read. Review: I feel that Sandra Cisneros's best quality in writing is her sense of description and detail of certain memories and daily life living. Reading each little story, I enjoyed the transistion to another, I felt a good sense of space and timing. There were no aspects of the book that I did not like. Here are some examples of my favorite lines in the book: page 17 "Not the sky ice cream bells'giggle of Rachel and Lucy's family, but all of the sudden and surprised like a pile of dishes breaking." Laughter
Rating: Summary: Sandra Cisneros' book makes you expect the unexpected. Review: Sandra Cisneros best quality is how she can make a metaphoric image seem realistic. Not only is she great with her metaphoric images, but she has an incredible talent to keep the reader into the book so as not to expect what random thought or action will occur next.
Rating: Summary: Sandra Cisneros work of art Review: Sandra Cisneros work was absolutely well written and truly real. She communicates all the rapture annd rage of growing up in a modern world. She brought out Esperanza's character very well, of how she reacted to certain events in her life. For instance, when Cisnero wrote about Esperanza's name, how her name in english means hope, and in Spanish means to many letters. Cisnero is not just one of those famous writers who write fictional stories, her story is in reality. Also Cisneros writing was very understanding and touching. For instance in the chapter Four Skinny Trees she says, " They are the only ones who understand me. It gies on, but the point is that its describing how Esperanza lives in Mango, but feels she does not belong there like the trees. I also liked it because the chapters are short and right to the point. Overall, Cisneros Mango Street was a sensation to read, and her work was sensitive and alert.
