Rating: Summary: Youth trying to get through the difficulties of life, READ Review: The House on Mango Street, was a very uplifting and inspirational story, of a girls struggle and obtacles that she overcame as a child growing up. Esparanza, is very interesting, and someone that I was able to relate to. Throughout the vinettes, she showed us every aspect of her life and the many things that she would encounter as a young girl growing up, that basically had nothing. Esparanza is an inspiration to me, as well as a hero. The whole story gives you this feeling, of great appreciaton of the things that you do have. To keep you going and interested in the book, she ues a lot of imagery and metaphors to help you picture the sitution. I believe that if this book is not enjoyed, than you obviously have no appreciation of life and the things that you are able have,no matter if you are rich or poor, life is precious and should be appreciated in every which way possible. Cisneros' shows us this in many of her vinnettes, which keeps you thirsty for more. Definetly read this book, to understand and grasp themeaning of life as a whole and all the elements that come with it.
Rating: Summary: It was great Review: It was a good book although it kind of went off the wall a couple of times. You didn't understand the story she was telling at times, but Cisneros' surely made up for it for her great poetic style of writing. Great Job!!!
Rating: Summary: The novel is written in an intresting way and very creative! Review: I enjoyed the novel although it was short. The short sonnets allow the reader to stay focussed and interested. It also is written in a creative and intersting way. I do not rate this book a five because it was not so intresting that I couldn't put it down. Just about anyone could relate the novel to their own life experiences and I believe it should be read for all cultures. After reading the novel I now feel that I know Sandra Cisneros as a writer and as a person. My favorite sonnet was "Where I Live." Which basiclly talks about her home and neighborhood. Overall the novel was a great learning experience.
Rating: Summary: Great Book Review: This book was outstanding. Its simple wording is suprisingly vivid. Any woman at any age can get something out of this book. The vignettes flow very well into one another and the stories with in them are touching.
Rating: Summary: one of the best books ever written Review: i can't even count how many times i have read this book. it offers subtle and sensitive insight into the plight of the latinos while offering hope and comfort to women everywhere. the themes are truly universal and anyone who has ever suffered alienation and/or poverty, among other things, will find enormous comfort within this thin volume - i know i have on countless occasions!
Rating: Summary: Doesn't fit together. Review: I though that this book did not come together. It had a lot of seperate stories, but it never came together. It was just like a book of short stories. The only things simmilar were Esperanze, the main charector, and that she lived in a house on Mango Street.
Rating: Summary: A Great Book To Read In One Sitting Review: It took me two times to get the full meaning of the book. I like the way everything was worded and how the hard to understand grammer was used. I had to read for my 9th grade AP english class. I really enjoyed it.
Rating: Summary: Spare yet interesting Review: I would recommend this book to just about anyone. It's not just about Mexican Americans experiencing the struggle, though the book has Mexican essence. Cisneros displayed the universal struggle for all nationalities to do better and be better than they are now, with a focus on Latin Americans. I loved the line towards the end of the book where Ezperanza is older and says she is "tired of looking at what she can't have." Cisneros also did a wonderful job in Esperanza's realization that she didn't have much to brag about. Children don't realize they are poor until they get older, around the time they discover the parents aren't perfect. I look forward to reading more of Cisneros work; her vivid capture of the Latino's world.
Rating: Summary: this book is bad Review: this lady in the book whose name is esperanza obviosly has no self esteem she is hard on herself throughout the whole making the whole experience very unrealistic
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Book~But the Girl Has Problems Review: I had to read The House on Mango Street in English and I thought it was a really really good book, but Esperanza needed a serious boost of self-esteem. She should have been proud of her background, theres nothing wrong with being Hispanic, and her house. She might Have had it bad but she had it better then most people. I think that if anyone in the book read what Esperanza was writing they would have given her a talk about how proud you should be of your heritage and your name since it was after a family member. It was a wonderful book and i enjoyed reading the little vignettes, but Esperanza just bothered me too much to call this one of my favorites. I know this is only a book, but I'd just like to give a little message to Esperanza: LIGHTEN UP A BIT!
