Rating: Summary: "I think the book was enlightening." Review: Tiffany R 4-26-99 I think this book was very enlightening. It gave a P.O.V. of a young child, which most stories don't. This you could tell because the vocabulary was simple. But in a way the vignettes were too short and not describing enough. The best part was the way that she began acting because she was growing up. That is one thing all women can connect with. On a one to ten scale I would give "The House on Mango Street" an eight. It should definitely be read by other high school kids.
Rating: Summary: A very good book Review: This book is a heartwarming book which is well written. It talks about everything from rape to poverty.
Rating: Summary: My favorite read of the year. Review: Juana F. 4-26-99 ''The House On Mango Street,'' is a really good book. It is a really good book because it's mixed with poetry, nonfiction, and fiction. It tells you the life of a little girl who lived on Mango street who didn't like living there. It has a lot of great vignettes that leave almost everything to your imagination. It is a good novel for either kids or adults. You never know if what you're reading really happened or if it's the nonfiction part of the book.
Rating: Summary: The book wasn't that good. Review: josh s. the house on mango street The book was alright. But it wasn't the best or one of the best books I've read, I tend to like Stephen King and horror stories better. There was one good vignette called The Monkey Garden, the reason it was so good was because it dealed with everyday life and it was just a real good comparison with that garden and the Garden Of Eden and growing up. If she woulda applied that to other vignettes it woulda been a much better book.
Rating: Summary: I want to read more Cisnreos! Review: Jesus G. amazon Review I would really recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading short novels or likes reading stories by young hispanic woman's point -of-view . This book really brought up some good and interesting points about race, sexuality, discrimination, and even about growing up around different people and the impact they have on a person's life. This book has some very interesting vignettes that use a lot of metaphors and even poetry. Overall, I would really recommend this book to people that like to read vignettes and short stories.
Rating: Summary: Share this book with others Review: Christian P. A read from Phoenix, Arizona Maryvale H.S. April 26, 1999 The House on Mango Street My name is Christian and I attend Maryvale high school class of 02. This is a very good book. People should take a look at this for the reason it is not a novel but more along the line of a vignettes--a multiple short story book. The writings and thoughts shared with readers are from her own experience. She is telling us some of her life stories. People ridicule her because she wants to write what she feels. People write things that don't have to be written to her about her book. If you don't like it don't read it. I think that this book was a very entertaining collection of vignettes that should be shared with other students at other high schools. Some people might think that this book isn't for H.S. students. I believe people should give it a chance.
Rating: Summary: I agree with the "D.C." reader Review: I totally agree with the reader's point of view from D.C on "HOUSE ON MANGO STREET. I too think the only reason it became popular is because, she is hispanic and a female. The book and herself would not have been as respected if it was not for that, so I feel it was not that great of book! DANA F.
Rating: Summary: I disagree with "somewhere in AZ" and "Phoenix reader" Review: Hi, my name is Sheronda. I think that the House on Mango Street is a good book because the vignettes deal with race, gender, and class. The vignettes are short stories and they "run" together and that is a really cool thing to do. I have never read a book that used multiple vignettes to tell a story. Some of the vignettes are weird because you can usually tell that a vignette about a certain person will be used over and over again like Marin. Sandra Cisneros used her name over and over again throughout the whole book. This book would be great for any age from 5 to 105.
Rating: Summary: The book is written in a boring kids point of view Review: David I believe that House on Mango Street is highly overrated. The annoying writing is enough to make you stop reading the book. Out of all the great writers out there this is not one of them. I believe some younger readers would like the book, but for kids fifteen or older don't pick this book up. There are many more books worth reading instead of this one.
Rating: Summary: Sad and happy, depressing, but, uplifting. Review: Ciseros's The House on Mango Street is well worth the small amount of time it takes an active reader to peruse. Her detailed account of twelve year old Esperanza's view of life inspires even a middle aged woman (like myself) to find an outlet for your aspirations and dreams. Esperanza is a protagonist whose personal strength could inspire young women who are not expected to make anything of themselves. This novel should be mandatory reading for all teenage girls. I truely inspirational coming of age tale.
