Summary: If this book had a story it would be great
Review: The House on Mango Street is a collection of short stories told to you by a twelve year old getto girl. Each story is about a facet of getto life, which made it hard to for me, a middle class male, to relate to. The short length of the stories didn't help much ether. Because there was no time to build a setting the stories made you feel as if you are reading an MTV music video. Of course, all these shortfalls could be forgiven if the book had any character development at all, but sadly, the characters reminded me of cardboard cut-outs in theaters.

Summary: It was a good Book
Review: I thought this was a good book...except the fact that it had way too many vignettes that didnt have anything to do with the story. It appealed to me to see the way of life through someone elses eyes..and their aspects on life

Summary: Who's going to do it [make it better]? Not the mayor.
Review: This novel consists of forty-four vignettes in the life of a young Mexican-American girl (I believe she is about thirteen or fourteen years old) named Esperanza Cordero, growing up in the Latino section of Chicago (I would guess in the late 1960s or 1970s). These brief and colorful vignettes, presented in a beautiful voice, tell of Esperanza's family, friends, and neighbors and enable the reader to see the young girl growing up and maturing before our eyes. The book also demonstrates the role of the environment on helping to shape and direct a person's life. It also places responsibilities on the shoulders of individuals to "make things better."

Summary: A poignant look at what growing up in the barrio is like
Review: Cisneros writes a very realistic depiction of what growing up as a young Hispanic girl is really like. As I sat in my AP English 3 class while my teacher narrated the story, my classmates immediately began retelling what aspects of her story rang true in our own childhood. As Lucy, Rachel, and Esperanza clumsily strutted around in high heels, some of us couldn't help but smile to ourselves as we recalled when we used to do the same thing. All of us could remember instances when broken English like Mamacita's (Mamasota) were common staples in our older relatives. Cisneros gives also readers a humorous flashback at childhood staples. This book is not only a must read for Hispanics but a beautifully written book for all people.

Summary: It is a heart warming and wonderful book.
Review: "The House on Mango Street" was a lovely novel. at the begining i was a little skeptical at first but once i got into it, my heart was truly for esperanza, the main character. This book is a lovely way to convey the spanish culture to readers of all ages. This is a wonderful book to read on a saturday afternoon, in a corner of your house in a comfy chair. It is a heart warming and wonderful book.

Summary: It was surprisingly good!
Review: At first, this book was really boring. But once you got far enough into it, it became really good.

Summary: Excellently written
Review: I found that the author did a wonderful job of giving a near biographical rendition of her life. It was highly entertaining, the word choice was surperb for Esperanza, and the sentence and paragraph structure made you think you were young again. The book also hit many controversial issues, some that make you want to walk into the book and speak your mind. All in all, it's one of the best books I've read this year.

Summary: This is a really great book to read.
Review: I really enjoyed this book. It was fun to read and very funny. It had many exciting points. What I really liked about the book was that, it had alot of short vignettes, with each having a different story. This book is short and easy to read. I would recommend it to anyone.
