Summary: insightful
Review: As a former, temporary, resident of a hispanic Chicago neighborhood, I greatly enjoyed reading the story of one who grew up so near where I lived. I now feel that I understand, a bit better, where the negativity of many of the children and adolescents I encountered there comes from. Cisneros captures and makes sense of the feelings of privation and isolation that I sensed in many of my neighbors.

Another negativity--that of students who think this book "sucks"--I find less comprehensible and far more pathetic. As a teacher-in-training, I find it highly disappointing to see the number of casual and inflammatory dismals, by high school students, of this as a "boring" book. Because the negative reviews have almost entirely lacked any cogent reasons for the dislike, I think they say more about the literacy of the reviewers than the quality of the book.

Summary: This book was OK
Review: I finished reading this book about a week ago. Cisneros has quite a flair and I love her writing style. She is very poetic and has good word choice. One thing I did not like about her book was the very short chapters, they were well written and had good ideas, but you wanted to read more about that incident and the chapter was over, And the next chapter would have nothing to do with the prior one. This book would have been much better if it was consistent. I also think that she drew too much pity on to the main charector, who really didn't deserve it.

Summary: The most beautiful, lyrical book I have ever read.
Review: This book speaks to my soul. I highly recomend this book for any woman who listens to her heart and sees her life as poetry.

Summary: A brief and interesting story about life in Chicago.
Review: This book takes you to one of the many unique neighborhoods which make up Chicago. It is the Latin neighborhood on Mango St. where the character Esperenza finally moves to with her family after several apartments all over the city. Each vignette deals with a person on the block and their unique story to tell. The stories themselves can be confusing at times can leave the reader perplexed. There is no indication during the book that the story will change. They are brief and to the point which is good in a way. Growing up in Chicago I can relate to some of this story. If someone who is from a rural setting reads this book they might miss the point about life in the big city.

Summary: Doodoo
Review: Method Man can sum up my review in three words: Doodoo is doodoo. People, this "book" is certainly doodoo.

Summary: Beautiful description of growing up Chicana.
Review: I loved this book. It is one of my favorites. Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. I could totally relate it. I grew up in a poor latino neighborhood, and I was ashamed of where I lived. The metaphors she uses show how an imaginative young person sees the world. I think every person who likes poetry and books about growing up, should read this book.

Summary: A memorable classic, a must read
Review: This was a wonderful book. It is full of metaphors and lessons about life. You have to get to the bottom, don't by any means just take it for what it says. Cisneros is a masterful writer and her true style comes through in the novel. As a school book I admit I was skeptical, but it was truly worth it. Those who think it boring were not thinking while they read or they would have cought the true meaning, not just the veneer.

Summary: Cleverly written book about Esperanza's life on Mango Street
Review: This book is about a girl named Esperanza, she tells of her life living on Mango Street in the streets of Chicago. This house wasn't what they expected, they moved there because in their previous house, it was old and there was a problem with house, so the why moved to the house on Mango Street. Everyone from the family moved to Mango Street, there were six people, Esperanza, Papa, Carlos, Kiki, and her sister Nenny. The house her mother and father said they would one day move into, was never like the house on Mango Street. The house they described, was a very nice house, while the house on Mango Street, was a beat up house, with broken windows, narrow stairs, and it was not too clean. Further in the book, Esperanza has many little different kinds of esperiences that she goes through while living on Mango Street. Going through these esperiences, bad and good, Esperanza learned a lot and became a stronger woman. She grew from her mistakes, and also learned from other's mistakes.

Summary: One of the best books I have ever read
Review: The house on Mango street is a book for all girls, teenagers and young women. I absolutely loved it. It made me remember times I spent as a child with other children in my neighborhood. One of the best things about Cisneros is her style of writing. The entire story is written in short vignetts. She shows a young latina girl's comming of age in the barrios of Chicago. Her story is told in the context with her relationships with people in the neighborhood. I highly recomend reading this book and then read it again.
