Rating: Summary: Simple writing style for a deep book. Review: House on Mango Street is wonderfully written. The reader sees and feels trough Esperanza's eyes and is able to understand better what the girl has in mind. This way of writing stresses this feeling. The vignettes look like the page of a dairy, and the style seems to really belong to the young girl. This book can be considered as a children book, but it suits every age and some nuances need a mature viewpoint. What's more House on Mango Street allows the reader to understand the double problem felt by a Hyspanic girl. A easy but deeply moving book which must have the chance to be be read by everybody at every age.

Rating: Summary: The House on Mango Street Review: The House on Mango Street was a sensational story of a childhood lived on the "other side of the tracks". For some it opens their eyes to a different envirenment, and for others it is a story you can relate to. Her writeing style is unique and wonderful, like a sweet song instead of a novel. I recomend this book to those who adore poetry and the misteries it ravels.
Rating: Summary: A good picture of life in the Latino district of Chicago Review: Our book club of five 12 and 13 year old girls read this book for book club, and we had mixed feelings about it. It is a good book if you like the idea of little sections of someones life, that are not really explained, but when they are put together, it portrays a very vivid picture for this girl's life growing up.
Rating: Summary: A Tapestry of Experiences Review: I teach English to speakers of other languages at the high school level. For the past five years I have been reading _The House on Mango Street_ with some of my classes. Not only is it the highlight of the year for me, but for my students as well. Cisneros's magnificently lyrical prose forces us to see the world through the perspective of an adolescent Latina. Don't let the simple sentences and short chapters fool you. Beneath the surface lies a rich network of themes: poverty, child abuse, rape, spousal abuse, the importance of education, hypocrisy, and a host of others. If you're looking for a linear story with a clearly defined plot, look elsewhere. Cisneros paints in broad strokes, and her canvas is multi-colored. Seen from up close, each chapter is a self-contained beauty. Seen from a distance, the chapters come together to reveal a masterpiece of Latino literature; it is by turns a feminist novel, a bildungsroman, and a chronicle of the will's triumph. The book has affected me profoundly, and with each new reading I find more to admire about it.
Rating: Summary: Gorgeously poetic prose Review: I loved this book (Cisneros is probably my favorite contemporary American writer). I loved the vignettes written as if through the eyes of a child. Her descriptions are warm and funny, her use of language clearly shows her background in poetry. Cisneros has a wonderful voice.
Rating: Summary: A space for female: Cisneros' Mango Street Review: This book tries to speak for Mexican American women. They are "minority in minority". And voices are silenced. Cisneros like many chicana writers would do, writes within community, it is better to fight for all but for individual. This book can be compared to another chicana fiction, Chavez Denise's "The last of the menu girls". They both centered around community, around friends, neighbors, families. Most important of all, they concern about female. And through writing, they crave for a space and a voice for women who live on the boundary. This is a classic for those who are interested in chicana literature, and I think Cisneros has done a revolution, and has her space by giving a very special form and writing style and organization to this book.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely Fabulous! Review: Sandra Cisneros may be our most gifted contemporary writer. The language is vivid and captivating. Reading this book allowed me to experience a people and culture I never would have known. I am indebted to her, and I look forward to reading her future works.
Rating: Summary: Talk About Boring Review: I heard a lot of good reviews of the book but when I picked up the book to read it boried me to death. The author goes from one story to another without even connecting them. First she writed about a guy grabbing Esperanza then after she starts another chapter with one of her friend getting married to a salesman. It doesn't make sense! The book is boring!
Rating: Summary: Talk about boring! Review: As I picked up the novel I was quite excited to be readinbg it, but once I started I was confused and bored. With vignettes that make almost no sense. Each one a different subject that seemed so phony and stupid. Cisceneros delivers quite bland plots for the stories that never seem to take off. The novel portays a Latino family and their community. But the stories are so obvious. I strongly recommend you stay away from this book.
