Rating: Summary: vignettes, how they work in the book. Review: "The House on Mango Street," by Sandra Cisneros, is about Esperanza Cordero and her years growing up in the Latino section of Chicago, seen by some as the bad section of town. It is told through a lot of different little vignettes about Esperanza and the different people that she grows up with. It is a book about the strange beauties and the tough realities of life that are found in the least likely of places. It shows the hardships faced and the good times experienced. "The House on Mango Street" is told in the voice of a young child with mature overtones. All the vignettes help to set the scene of Esperanza's life by showing all the different people who effected her in some way, told in their own little stories. When reading this book, it is easy to get confused, because none of the vignettes ever seem to tie together. There are just all these vignettes that have all different themes that never all connect, but eventually, the whole book does come together in the end with many themes. The main theme of the book is the way we see our home how it defines us.
Rating: Summary: House on Mango Street Review: House on Mango Street is my favorite book of all time. Many readers get hung up on the author's not-always-correct use of grammer, punctuation, etc...however, the book has powerful imagery with meanings on all levels. Like peotry, Cisneros' literature is like condensed speech, that gets to the heart of the myth of the patriarchy in the lives of Mexican-American women, and all women in general, overall, everyone needs to read it.
Rating: Summary: This book totally blows Review: I couldn't stand this book! I had to read it for an English class and couldn't stand it. The author is praised for being such a poet and blah blah blah, but she doesn't even know how to use quotation marks! Each chapter seems like a long poem and is really hard to read because of this. On top of Cisneros' inability to write properly, it has absolutely no plot whatsoever. It just keeps talking about growing up in "da hood." Save yourself and never read this book!
Rating: Summary: HORRIBLE BOOK! Review: This book is HORRIBLE! Why does it get so much praise! It is a boring, totally weird view of the Latino culture. If I want to be put to sleep I'll read this book again.
Rating: Summary: poor Review: when writing the book Sandra must have wrote this book with putting people to sleep in mind. I heard a lot of good reviews of the book but when I picked up the book to read it boried me to death. The author goes from one story to another without even connecting them.
Rating: Summary: Loved this book Review: I personally liked this book. It reminded me of the times in which I was growing up in the Bronx. I also would sit outside with my friends and look at the stars. The people from other neighborhoods would come into ours and would be very afraid to pass by because they also didn't know any better.
Rating: Summary: Pure Poetry Review: Perhaps the most moving and thought provoking book I have read in years, "The House on Mango Street" takes a harsh look at life in the slums of Chicago. Exposing the prostition of women, abuse by men, and ever-present need for escape, this work reveals new treasures each time I pick it up. A must-read for the serious book lover.
Rating: Summary: what's the point? Review: People in high shool are reading this book and liking it!WHY! This is just a few fictional stories stories smashed together in 2 covers. Not to mention the grammer-I'd rate it a 0.5 in clarity. Out of all the books I've read this is NOT one of my favorites. If you want a REALLY good book, try Redwall by Brian Jacques.
Rating: Summary: A very dragging book Review: The House on Mango street is in my opinion a very bad book. It is a book that has no point and it drags while you read it. The book is not good at blending each chapter into one another. The content is terrible and some of the topic do not even make sense.
Rating: Summary: Bad Book Review: This book is pointless. I had to read it for a collage exam and found it to be the worst book i had ever read. Their is no point to the book, their are just a bunch of sort stories that have no connection what so ever. If you are thinking about buting this book don't do it, you'll just find your self disatisfied with a book that should have never been published. If it were possible i wouldn't have givin this book any stars because it doesn't deserve them. However, 1 star is the lowest you are allowed to give so i guess i'll just have to settle for that.
