Rating: Summary: The House on Mango Street- WooEsHs Review: The House on Mango Street describes the life of a young girl living in a run down Puerto Rican community. Male discrimination, prejudice, friendship and belonging are discussed throughout the story. Though having no plot, Cisneros did a wonderful job of telling this story in a fashion that makes the reader think about what it is that they are reading. Mango Street is an easy read, which I would recommend to readers of all levels.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Book Review: I thought this book was a great book. It was much different from all of the other books i have read. The book had a very interesting setup. Our teacher had a discussion with us about the setup. He said the book was like a mosaic piece of art. Each chapter was a small piece of the the whole book. After a while i began to understand why the author used this typr of setup for the book. Each chapter lead up to how she really belongs to Mango Street. I liked this book alot. I like the way the author gave a great discription of the characters and how the author kept the reader wanting to learn more about the neighborhood Esperanza was living in. It was very interesting and is a great book to read if you have a lack of confidence in yourself.

Rating: Summary: The House on Mango Street - by: orteshs Review: I thought that The House on Mango Street was a powerful and heartbreaking book that explored the world of poverty in a Puerto Rican neighborhood. I loved how it never told you exactly what happened, but made you think about what it was saying so that you could figure it out. This book was excellently written and you could feel every thought and movement of Esperanza and the people around her.
Rating: Summary: Begert's Conclusions Review: I thought that the "House on Mango Street" was an interesting book. I enjoyed reading it very much, because it made me think while reading. It is very confusing if you are looking for a plot in that book. The reason being, there is none. Even though there is no plot, the book is well writen and gives the reader a fun time thinking and enjoying the book. I would recommend this book for people of ages 12-18. Although, even if your older than that, you can still enjoy it. There were many common themes in this book. Male dominance, prejudice, friendship, childhood just to name a few. This themes occur throughout this book and are obvious to the reader. The book is interesting because most of the chapters are one to two pages long, and there are about forty chapters. Each chapter tells a different story based on the previous one, and it's confusing if your looking for a plot. I enjoyed this book very much though and had a fun time talking about it in class. Esperanza was a very interesting girl. She didn't want to grow up tame, and showed that throughout the book. She wouldn't let her background, or her parents background get in the way of her. She lived in a neighborhood where the average person didn't finish high school, and had a bad job, even if they had one. She was determined to overcome these obstacles no matter what people told her. She had to deal with rape, and deception, but no matter what faced her, she overcame it. I believe this to be a happy book, one of goals and success. Yet it's a sad book, one of lies, deception, and defeat. I know this sounds like an oxymoron, but that is an ingenous way of writing this story. These are my conclusions on the "House on Mango Street."
Rating: Summary: The House On Mango St. Review: The House On Mango Street is beautifully written. Cisneros uses the American dream as a major theme in the novel. She also counters this with a great usage of the American tragedy. An example of this appears many times in her writings, "I knew then I had to have a house. A real house. One I could point to. But this isn't it. The house on Mango Street isn't it. For the time being, Mama says. Temporary, says Papa. But I know how those things go."(Pg. 5) She helps to bring out the sorrow and hope of Esperanza's journey. She neither relies too much on either aspect making the novel a great mixture of both. "Marin under the streetlight, dancing by herself, is singing the same song somewhere. I know. Is waiting for a car to stop, a star to fall, someone to change her life."(Pg. 27) This is an example of the hope and sorrow of Mango St. A great piece of literature that touches the heart and makes you feel for the characters. The many stories make the novel easy to read and keeps the reader interested. Cisneros spins a delicate web of intrigue will not giving away too much. I think that it's definitely a classic. I would highly recommend this novel.
Rating: Summary: A wonderful experience. Review: This book came to my attention at exactly the right time in my life. It was like the book just jumped off of the shelf and said please read me! I felt like the author and I must have a lot in common, except that I have been married. I liked the way she expressed her feelings and opinions, like when she said she could leave the table exactly like a man and leave the dishes behind and not push in the chair. My students enjoyed the book also.
Rating: Summary: A Story of Life Review: The House on Mango Street is a very interesting book. It has no continuous plot as most books do, but it is composed of vignettes that fit together to portray a young girl's experiences from childhood to womanhood. The author, Sandra Cisneros, creates a story that is true-to -life. It shows many of the cruelties in life such as prejudice, but the innocence of childhood and family relationships are also manifested. The story also combines humor with the hardships of living in a community where male domination is common. Cisneros wrote the book in short sentences that make it seem like the girl in the story is talking directly to the reader. The vignettes are brief and to the point. As the saying goes, " Brevity is the Soul of Wit". The House on Mango Street is good because it shows the many stages in which the main character goes through. By the end of the story, she has become a woman who is much different from the little girl that she was at the beginning of the story. This book shows that one can never forget the past and should accept it. As she was growing she struggled to get away from her past, but at the end she learned acceptance. The book is an easy read that is not a waste of time. It is enlightening in that it shows determination and the search for independence through the life of a girl who has many hopes and dreams for herself.
Rating: Summary: House on Mango Street Review Review: The book was very interesting and thorough. It was a good book but some readers may not be used to the way the book was made. Since the book has no plot and just has many short stories that make a big picture at the end, it can get very odd. The story was pretty good once you get used to the book having no plot. Sandra Cisneros makes a spectacular ending that rounds the whole story up. Cisneros does a wonderful job with this book and she was very creative. This book is given 4 stars by me because it was a good book but getting used to a book with no plot took me a longer time.
Rating: Summary: Terrible Review: I DO NOT recommend this book to anyone! I thought it was one of the worst books I ever read and it was not worth the time spent reading it in school!
