Rating: Summary: life lesson of a fiery lovable red-head Review: This beautifully written series revolves around the small-town adventures of talkative 13-year-old, Anne Shirley. After being in and out of orphanages her entire youth and unloved by her previous adopters, Anne is finally taken in by two elderly residents of Prince Edward Island - compassionate, shy Matthew Cuthbert and his austere (but ultimately soft-hearted) sister, Marilla. The story takes place in the early 1900's. Anne, the imaginative scatterbrained girl who thinks her "red hair is a curse", treats the reader to a humorous and touching story as she grows up in the loving Cuthbert home. Anne enjoys wonderful times with her new-found kindred spirit, Diana; makes several rehearsed apologies to the town gossip Mrs. Lynd; and is put to the test when her sworn competitor at school Gilbert Blythe, eventually falls head over heels for her. We see Anne transform from an awkward and imaginative fiery redhead, with a temper to match her hair...into a mature and successful writer/teacher, who still has a flare for dreaming, and getting into sticky predicaments no matter where she goes. The reader is taught many life lessons vicariously, as Anne develops into a more mature and rich character: We learn that to dream and to imagine is to live; to never to lose sight of where we come from and who we are; to never give up hope in attaining a dream; and...to love and appreciate those that are dear to us while we are yet together. Anne also teaches us that sometimes the most wonderful dreams are closer to home than we may think. It is no surprise that Lucy Maud Montgomery has touched hearts world-wide with her beloved Anne girl.
Rating: Summary: Anne of Green Gables Review: Anne of Green Gables is a fabulous tale of a young girl and her mischievous adventures. Anne was adopted by an older couple, who in fact wanted to adopt a boy not a girl. After Anne's sour impression she thought she was sure to go back to the orphanage but as time grew Anne became one of the family. That's where her adventure began. This is a great book for old fashioned adventure lovers. Anne pranks and misunderstandings come one after another, leaving the reader wondering what could possibly happen next. Anne's fire engine red hair makes unique and a unmistakably noticeable. Although this is old fashioned tale, it has a twist. Anne is very outspoken which is unlike any other girl of her time. Anne breaks the mold of the quiet country girl with her wild stories and an opinion for everything. The story doesn't end at the end of the last page it is followed by a series of Anne's adventure in other towns. It is great for readers who like well developed characters. Readers can follow Anne from the time she is going through grade school through the time she gets married. Reading this book I felt as if I were right there beside Anne every step of the way. Every scene is so well described it creates a picture of the scene. Although there are many exciting adventures in the story there is also tragic. The ending of the book is sure to bring tears to anyone's eyes. This is an example of the predictability of this book. The book follows a classic format of the girl next door and her adventures then finally a sad but expected ending. If I could change anything about the book I would surely change the ending. If the story wasn't so well described and full of unusual adventures then it would be as plain as any other book. Another downfall of this book was that it was a prime example of the 'levels' in society. For example there is the rich people, the middle class people, and the poor people. Throughout the book this was reflected upon whether Anne was in grade school or college. The book always promoted the fact that the 'poor people' wanted to fit in with the 'upper class people'. Even though this may be considered a fact of life the reason people read these kinds of adventures is to escape reality for a moment and live in another world. Readers can't do that if the book is the same as the world they live in. The classic role of the lower class student turning into a exceptionally smart student is shown in this book also. Anne and one of her classmates are known as the lower class outcasts who weren't thought to be especially bright. In the end both of these students graduate college early and with honors. This made the book predictable. Overall Anne's adventure won my heart over. The detail in the story was so exceptional I overlooked the predictability to see the whimsical story of a lighthearted girl full of fun and adventure. This book is sure to bring joy to anyone who can appreciate a good old -fashioned book. In the end the quality of the story overcame all the imperfections to make a wonderful charming story.
Rating: Summary: A Timeless Classic And Great Reading For Women Review: Lucy Maud Montgomery was a turn of the century Edwardian novelist from Canada- to be specific, from Prince Edward Island. It is Prince Edward Island that became the setting for Lucy's greatest work of fiction- Anne Of Green Gables. Lucy has written that Anne is an extension of herself and an embodiment of the independent, "new" woman of the emerging 20th century. Anne is a young orphan girl, "cursed" with red hair and a talkative vocal chords. She is blessed with an imagination and with winning, warm personality. Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, getting along in years, need help in the farm of Green Gables, and decide to get a boy from a local orphanage. They end up with Anne, but they get a better deal with her. Eventually, she wins their hearts and becomes a recognizable and loved member of their community. Anne has a difficult time in school, although she is very intelligent and learns quickly, Anne has enmity with Gilbert Blythe, a rambunctious young man who teases her. The adventures and pranks that Anne gets into are memorable- from her daring walk on a roof to pretending to be the Lady of Shallott of Arthurian romance. All these events occur in the first book of the series. The rest follows the course of Anne's career as an English teacher. She makes special connections with her students, especially with the young girls, and makes a great personal teacher to a wealthy family's daughter. In Avonlea, Anne falls in love with a distinguished, older man but their relationship becomes only a friendship. Anne returns to her beloved home of Green Gables and writes a novel about a collection of short stories from the small town. Anne marries Gilbert Blythe, the young man whom she had troubles with initially but who forged a friendship that blossomed into love. The series is a very inspirational work of historic fiction, portraying a young woman, not as naive, but as headstrong, independent and remarkably resourceful. Anne's spirit defies convention and norms of women's roles in that Edwardian society. She is a unique woman, with a great and humanitarian heart. She is a great role model for girls and women today. She is, in my opinion, inside every woman. Anne's legacy continues, and it is now a great DVD series, directed by Kevin Sullivan and starring Megan Follows, who fits the character perfectly. That was made in 1986 and appeared on Disney channel and PBS several times.
Rating: Summary: Hilarious Escapdes Review: As Marilla walks up the path to Green Gables she hears someone moaning and crying. As she enters the house she hears the sound again, and it is coming from Anne's room! What had Anne done this time? As Marilla rushes to Anne's room she sees a horrifying site! Anne of Green Gables by Lucy M. Montgomery describes the daily escapades of a young orphan girl who was adopted by an old couple who thought they were adopting a boy. Anne is a headstrong, wild, and wacky girl, who was sent to live at Green Gables in a small town on Prince Edward Island about 100 years ago. She is a lonesome girl who dosen't have many friends, she hates her hair color, likes to daydream, and talks nonstop. Her adventures include getting her friend drunk, walking on a roof, and almost drowning. I like the book because it is super hilarous with wierd things happening to Anne. I would recomend this book 100%. I enjoyed this book and I hope you will, too.
Rating: Summary: Very Very Cute!!! Review: Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery is a very funny book. The main character is a young girl named Anne who has been adopted by Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert. She has a bad temper and a big imagination. Most of the time she cannot control her mouth and blurts out the first thing that comes to her mind. She lives on a small farmhouse on the most perfect piece of land. It has grassy hills, a beautiful forest, a bubbling stream, a colorful orchard and patches of flowers every where. She wants so much to stay on this farmland but Matthew and Marilla do not think they will keep her. Finally Anne convinces them to let her stay. Her life is very different because of her temper and she endures many hardships, such as mistakenly making one of her friends drunk and dyeing her hair green. This is a great book; try reading it you might like it!
Rating: Summary: A review of Anne of Greene Gables by: Lizzie McGuire Review: When Matthew went to pick up the boy he adoped. But there is no boy but a girl. The girl said that if Matthew didn't like her then she would sleep in the cherry tree. Will she have to??????? L.M. Montgomery is the author of all the Anne of Greene Gable books. She brings life and spirit to this story. She writes this story from the third person. Matthew and his sister Marrila adopted a boy but when Matthew goes to pick him up there is a girl. She says the orphanage sent her. Matthew has no heart to let her sleep in the cherry tree so he takes her home. Marrilla does not like this. During this story Anne has to face that she is not the boy the brother and sister wanted. She still makes friends and has a blast on the small island of Prince Edwards Island. She loves the town, Avonlea, and loves all the friends she made. One of her best friends is Diana. Anne is a poetic, Mischievous, and loving girl. She loves Green Gables, the farm she lives on. I think this book appeals to girls more than boys. This book is a poetic and non-violent book.
Rating: Summary: Are You Ready For A Good Time Reading? Review: "Oh, Mrs. Cuthbert, did you really say that perhaps you would let me stay at Green Gables?" This is the beginning of a relationship that will last a lifetime. L.M. Montgomery was the writer that created this wonderful novel, Anne of Green Gables. Anne of Green Gables is a book about a girl named Anne. She is an exciting, adventurous, and funny girl. Anne comes to Green Gables, a farm on Prince Edward Island, when Mirilla and Mathew Cuthbert decided they needed help on their farm. At Green Gables Anne encounters many events while she was growing up. One of the first events was when Anne hit a rival student on the head with a writing tablet. Then, a couple weeks later she fell off a friends roof at a party. My favorite event was when Anne invited her kindred spirit, Diana, over for tea. Anne thought that she was giving Diana a raspberry drink when it was really wine. Anne learned from her mistakes, such as that one, and grew up to be a smart, beautiful heroine. I think that Anne of Green Gables was a great book. Anne is the kind of heroine that any girl would want as a friend. She is filled with adventure and excitement. When I read this book I really grew to like Anne and love her as my own friend. I would highly recommend this book for any girl who is ready to have lots of fun reading.
Rating: Summary: Good book Review: Beautiful tale of a beautiful child. A classic must-read.
Rating: Summary: The Best! Review: L. M. Montgomery is the BEST author! I've read all of her books. The imagery in her stories is beautiful- no one can describe places and events the same way. The series is full of humor, sweetness, sorrow, and originality.
Rating: Summary: Anne of Green Gables Review: My favorite book ever is Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery. The main reason I like this book is because it's funny. An example of a funny part in this in this book is when Anne bought hair dye from a salesman to dye her hair raven black, but it came out green. Anne always found a way to get into mischief, but not on purpose. Even though she got into a lot of mischief, she never made the same mistake twice. There are sad parts in this book also, like when Matthew one of Anne's guardians, dies from a heart attack. Despite the sad parts in this book there are sweet parts as well. An example of a sweet part in this book is Gilbert Blithe liking Anne. Gilbert is a boy Anne hated at first for calling her red pigtail carrots. This book is great because it has a lot of humor, a little sorrow, and a little romance. This book has it all!
