Summary: Mark Twain gave the best review of the first book, but . . .
Review: Rainbow Valley (#7) was my favorite book when I was a child. I recently bought and read, or re-read, all of them. My purpose was to give them to my grandchildren, but I've decided that I can't give them up. So another set will go to them, and I'll keep the ones I've got, thank you! You will probably find her prose a bit florid by modern standards. However, you will also find that she was |wonderful| at describing faces, personalities, and follies of the heart. In sum, Montgomery was one of the most meticulous writers to describe the human condition, and unlike most of the others truly adept in this difficult art, an optimist. You may think you know Anne from the excellent CBC specials, but, "Ain't nothin' like the real thing."

Summary: One word - Classic!
Review: The Anne of Green Gables series is a wonderful and grand masterpiece. I would give it more stars if I could.

L.M. Montgomery wrote some of the most memorial works in children's literature. Anne of Green Gables was an instant hit, and still is today.

The eight books all follow the story of Anne Shirley, a red headed, smart and imagnative Canadian girl who was an orphan all her life. When she enters Marilla and Matthew Cuthberts' life, she changes not only them, but all of Avonlea.

I really enjoyed the third one, Anne of the Island. Anne really grows up in that novel. It really showed a difference in the next novels to come.

In the last one, Rilla of Ingleside, it seemes like it was most narrated by Anne's daughter, Rilla, rather than Anne herself. The feelings and plaots were mostly seen threw Rilla's eyes. It was quite a diffference from the normality of Anne's feelings.

I would recomend these books any day. It shows that the twentieth century novel can be a classic. Anne of Green Gables is a story no one should go without reading.

Summary: Anne of my Heart
Review: I have had the first three "AnnE" books for quite some time. I began reading them in December and by the end of January had them all read. It was very fun to read one a week. I fell in love with Anne. I believe that everyone can relate to Anne and the predicaments which she finds herself in. The books were great to read when I was happy,or sad. They are marvellous books and I would suggest reading them to anyone.
It was sad, though, that Anne grew up. What is even sadder is that the same thing happens to us. One week Anne was a 13 year old girl, the next she was Principal of a School! (And engaged! I'm afraid that I shall always feel hostile towards Gil, he took Anne away from me!:)) It was very difficult reading about Anne as a 50 year old woman. My favourite book in the series would probably be Anne's House of Dreams. I really did not like Rilla of Ingleside. It was missing the Anne-ness that the others were. Instead of having it be a light and cheery book, it was depressing and full of anger and intensity. It was great to see that Rilla earned a motherly instinct, but it seemed like a very depressing book. I would skip Rilla of Ingleside if I were to read them again! When a series goes from the happy childhood days to the days of war, where a main character (one who I am very much like) dies, and a little boy drowns his kitten!!! That was too much, but then again, that is the way War was and is, I just don't like it! So if you don't want to read a depressing War-book, skip Rilla of Ingleside! It will leave a better taste in your mouth!
Also, The "Emily" series is wonderful!! I am only finishing the first book, but I love it!! It seems that LM Montgomery and I are "kindred spirits" for it seems that no matter how different each book is, there is always a character that is very similar to me! THANK YOU Lucy Maud Montgomery for giving the World such excellent and exquisit tales that warm our hearts and bring tears of joy and sadness to our eyes! You are amazing!!! :)

Summary: A Wonderful Series All Girls Should Read
Review: Having enjoyed this series so much growing up, I am now encouraging my daughter and niece to read them. They have seen the television versions of Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea, but they like the books much better because of the detail.

I am most drawn to the humor in these books. The multi-dimensional characters along with Anne's positive outlook (and her antics), which span the entire series are the most endearing factors of these books. It is wonderful to find these in a boxed set. They are true classics that all girls should read.

Summary: A wonderful series, no matter your age
Review: I first read this series as a preteen and still love it today as a 30-year old mother of 3 boys.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: If I could give it more than 5 stars, I would give it 100!!!
Review: I read these books first when I was about 18 or 19. I know. I know. Slap my parents and my teachers for that! I saw the movie "Anne of Green Gables" (and "Anne of Avonlea" I think) before I ever read the books. I was a little disappointed that the characters in the movie didn't remain 100% true to the books, but then we'd have a 20 hour movie, wouldn't we? The movies are the only ones that have been made from a book which I have found to be every bit as good as the book!

My sister received the entire set of Anne books for her birthday, but since she doesn't like to read, my mom and I took them over. I read the entire series through in a week, I think, and I was ENCHANTED! Not one of the books was any better or any worse than all the others! L.M. Montgomery seems to have a knack of making characters come alive. (Not like Anne in her story-writing club, who had to deal with characters who simply REFUSED to behave themselves! "Contrary characters," I think she called them!)

All around, a very wholesome book series and a very delightful read! Must Read!

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: A Must-Read
Review: No need to buy these books one at a time. Just get the box set. You'll want to read them all.

These books are utterly wholesome yet never boring. An enthralling tale of a young misfit coming of age, the series presents humor, heartache, romance. And it's all unforgettable. Read them now, read them years from now. Bet you won't read them only once!

Comparable books: Little Women, Little House on the Prairie.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Deserves more than 5 stars
Review: I own all of the books, I own all of the movies, and I've been to the Green Gables house in P.E.I. Anne of Green Gables is my favourite book. I'm nearly seventeen years old and I have a feeling that it will remain my favourite until I'm old and grey. There's something incredible about Montgomery's writing - the characters, the places... You get to know and love Anne. And Gilbert is irrisistible. To read all eight books and watch Anne sprout from a stubborn child to an even more stubborn woman is something you want to do over and over again. You should read the books first, then watch the movies. Both of them are well worth the money.
