Rating: Summary: A Classic Story For All Ages Review: In our present world, there are so many silly, pointless books about violence and action heroes, books that lack sense and have neither morals nor character development. This story reflects a time when novels were about people just like you and me - people with the same problems, thoughts, and feelings as us. Anne of Green Gables is a story where a young orphan is adopted by a family in Prince Edward Island, a beautiful area in Canada. The young optimistic girl's imagination often get her into trouble, which makes the book both humorous and enjoyable. The important point about her problems is that they are conflicts faced by many young girls in today's society, despite the fact that she "lived" over a century ago. The character development through the series is what truly makes this piece of literature a classic. Finally, I would like to say that this is an ideal story for a mother and daughter to read together. This lovely book, full of laughs for all generations, has earned its five stars.
Rating: Summary: Charming Review: I first loved the "Anne-girl" books at 12 or 13. Since then, whenever I am feeling glum, I re-read the detail-filled tales of an orphan girl from PEI with a vivid imagination and an enviable, wholly positive outlook on life. I recently realized that I skipped volumes #5 and 6 so it was a real treat to go back to read them (I could relate better at 25 and a newlywed to "Anne's House of Dreams.") It's hard not to see the beauty and romance in these books. Lucy Maud Montgomery wrote charming tales--I imagine it's the sort of thing that Anne wrote during her B.A. days at Redmond. I'm back online to buy the boxed set for my sister, age 10. I hope she learns to love Anne, Diana, Gilbert and the host of other kindred spirits Lucy Maud Montgomery created as much as I do.
Rating: Summary: Comfort Book Review: Encountering Anne and her magical world at the age of 11, I have never quite escaped Avonlea and the wonderful characters concocted by L.M. Montgomery. Montgomery takes to heart the advice given to Anne in Anne of the Island to write about the simple things in life, and she does so beautifully. Reading one of the'Anne' book is like coming home - no matter where you're from.
Rating: Summary: A Great Set of Books for Everyone Review: There is so much I could say about this book set but there is a 1000 word maximum so i'll sum it up. I recently saw the first two movies from Anne of Green Gables and feel in love with them. I bought these books so i could learn more and have them to keep forever. These stories of her life, marriage, children and friends are amazing. I would recommend them to anyone. In the last one about Rilla I cried when I found out that _____ died. I was so sad. I wanted him to marry _____, who secretly loved him. He never knew!!! Well you'll just have to read these books to find out more. I would give it a lot more than 5 stars if i could. Now that I have finished all the books i have just bought the third movie, the Continuing Story and hope to get it soon in the mail!
Rating: Summary: The best book I have ever read in my life!!!!! Review: The book Anne of Green Gables is a great book for all ages. Although it is a bit lengthy, there is ALWAYS something happening on each page. If you take the time to read it, this is really a worthwhile book. The story is about a young orphan girl who is accidentally adopted by the Culberts, who had wanted a boy instead of a girl . Anne gets into all sorts of trouble soon, like jumping onto beds, (with people sleeping in them) and dying her hair green! Although Anne was an "accident", the Culberts would never forget life without her. If you are an adventure-loving person, you should definitely read this book!
Rating: Summary: My daughter didn't want to finish the book Review: My 13 year old daughter is in 8th grade, and although this book's level of reading difficulty is beneath her reading ability she still couldn't put it down. With all of the pressures of school these days it is wonderful that this classic children's novel can still be a source of relaxation and entertainment for our children.
Rating: Summary: A childhood favorite! Review: Heroines: varied When aging Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert sent away to an orphanage for a youngster to give them a hand around their farm, they were expecting a sturdy lad to arrive at the local train station. But instead what they got was a slip of a girl with bright orange hair, an inquisitive mind, and a nonstop mouth. Preparing to send her back, Anne begs the brother-sister pair to consider keeping her, stating that she can do all the work a boy could. Softened by her heartfelt pleas the Cuthberts give Ann-with-an-E Shirley a trial period at Green Gables, and though it is a close thing, they decide to keep her. Poor Anne has the worst time settling into her new home. Her runaway mouth offends the neighbors and her impulsiveness is forever landing her in trouble, whether she is turning her orange hair green, breaking her slate over the head of handsome class tease Gilbert Blythe, or nearly drowning herself in a leaky rowboat while reenacting "The Lady of Shalott". Fortunately Anne's loving nature wins her more friends than her mouth earns her enemies. The little orphan girl is soon adored by her foster parents and most of her peers, particularly her shy neighbor Diana Berry, who becomes Anne's "bosom friend". What worked for me: Anne is my bosom friend too! She's always felt like a real person to me because she's so spunky yet sweet. And I can certainly relate to her impulsiveness, though my hair turned hot pink rather than bright green. I do admire her ability to stick to something, but not her grudge holding. Poor Gilbert spent years trying earn his way back into Anne's good books! (The romantic in me just adores the on-again-off-again relationship between Anne and Gil.) Size-wise Anne was a skinny little girl with carroty hair who wished she was plump with nut brown tresses or had sleek raven locks like her best friend Diana. Ironically, she grows up to be fashionably slender and it is then comfortably-built Diana who pines to be more like Anne. What didn't work for me: There are a couple of instances in the series where people considered to be larger than pleasingly plump are not cast in the most flattering light. Overall: Fans of historical and juvenile literature should enjoy these books. (Fans of sweet romances should also adore them because of the relationship between Anne and Gil.) Note of interest: this series has been turned into three movies and a television series, each drawing with less and less accuracy from the original books but still quite entertaining. Warning: The story is sweet but also deals with harsh life realities at times. If you are planning to read this to a youngster, be prepared for possible questions on these matters. If you liked the "Anne of Green Gables" series you might also enjoy the "Little House" series.
Rating: Summary: Touching,Funny and VERYYYY Entertaining!!! Review: I read a lot.. an average of 4-5 books a week. When a freind told me about this book ... i was quite baffled...i'm into classics... but i had read 'Kilmeny of the orchard' before and had not like it. So i took 'Anne of green gables' very reluctantly. An hour later i could'nt put it down and wanted to read all the titles.I became an instant fan of LM.Montgomery. Anne is really enchanting, with an excellent imagination and a kind heart with a quick temper. it's the best recipe for a book in a cosy bed.It gives a modern classical feel. Its written really well...and all the characters are really well drawn...Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert , Diana, Mrs. Lynde and ( Gilbert) If you like to read claasics as well as contempory books .. i 'll advise u to read this.
Rating: Summary: Anne of Green Gables et al Review: Anne of Green Gables, and its sequels, are the books that have brought me through life thus far. As a child I enjoyed the "scrapes" Anne (and her children in the later books) continued to get herself into and now, as nearly an adult, I enjoy the words of wisdom written between the lines. Although Anne of Green Gables is admittedly old fashioned, this book is not boring, or stupid, or childish. It is, and will continue to be, my favourite book of all time for its simplicity, its detail and the "thrills" I get as I read and reread it. Just read it, you will not regret it.
