Rating: Summary: Unique plot, bad ending Review: It's evident some of the reviewers are not old enough, or did not bother thinking about the plot before writing their reviews. The glaring obvious are those which, in their infinite wisdom, state that the perfect world depicted in this book is far from perfect. If you had thought about the plot, you'd realize this is the central problem of this story. The story revolves around the conflict between the main character, Jonas, and his knowledge about the truth. In his community, there is no pain, war, or hate - all which we experience in our daily life. On the other hand, the population is incapable of understanding joy, love, or even colors. They are in a state of Sameness, as it is known in their society. Jonas is chosen by the elders (without his opinion) to become the next Receiver. The Receiver holds all knowledge hidden from the rest of the community. They are all the memories and feelings from the past. Only the Receiver holds all the joys and sufferings, in order to maintain Sameness. When Jonas is selected, the current Receiver is called The Giver. He starts to give Jonas many memories - snow, war, sunshine, pain, color. Soon enough, Jonas realizes how society lacks uniqueness. Thus, he attempts to change things. The quality Lois Lowry puts in her books is excellent, but I have two problems with this particular story. (No, it's not about how the perfect world sucked.) First, it seems to be short. A year passes in just a short chapter - it would have been nice to read more about Jonas's training from The Giver. Second, the ending was not as good as the rest of the story. It is cryptic, and gives very little information as to what happened to Jonas. The Giver is much, much better than the way some people make it out to be. I would recommend it to those entering high-school and above.
Rating: Summary: Da bommb Review: It's great. As Jonas walks through. life as the receiver. He is torn apart but inside he grows strong. The reader learns more of this strange town every chapter. It's not a little kid book!

Rating: Summary: Thought Provoking Review: Jonas and his family live in an ideal world. A world without violence, crime, or poverty. Unfortuately, their society is also arranged so that people live without choices. There is very little emotion. Respect for life means something completely different in their community. The memories of life for the entire community are stored in one person's mind, the Giver. When the children are twelve, they are assigned their occupations, which will not change for the rest of their lives. Jonas is chosen to be the new Receiver of memories. He begins a journey, from which he will never recover. This is a very intersting and thought provoking book. There are some very disturbing ideas addressed in this book. It is a wonderful story to read, regardless of one's age. If you have ever wondered what it would be like to live in a "perfect" society, you should read this book.
Rating: Summary: Jonas thinks his world is perfect, but the past was better. Review: Jonas awaits his new job and when he is elected as receiver of memeories, he is able to see into the past. Now he knows his world isn't as perfect as he thought and it is up to him and the Giver to change their community
Rating: Summary: conformity of the community Review: Jonas community is different from our common society. They stress the conformity and sameness. They will receive the assignment at 12 age, and they should follow the assignment which was arranged each other. They don't know common thing like color, snow, pain, war and so on, because the community is very specially. Jonas would be able to receive the Receiver from the ceremony at 12 age, and he trained by the Giver. At the end of the story, Jonas leaves to the community with his brother who has same color eyes with Jonas. I hate the rule in the story because it interfere their freedom and choice for the future. In addition, they don't care death; moreover, they think the death is the real release So, I opposite to the side of the story. However, it might be right the community is perfect society. There are not any difference between people like poverty and rich, idiot and genius. If they don't know another society, they will be live very perfectly. I impress the part of training about Christmas. Jonas considered the family and love at there. It is one of the emotions, but in the community, their family is not real, and it is also already decided by community. They have a birth mother separately. The book is very differently other fiction, and I think about the common our society again, and I can remind the material who settled in the present because of the story.
Rating: Summary: The Giver by Lois Lowry Review: Jonas grows up knowing nothing but the rules. He has known nothing but right and wrong his whole life. Growing up in a community where the best is expected and everything is uniform. Then at the age of 12 everything changes. At 12 community members get their life assignment. Jonas is chosen to fulfill the most respected and greatest job, the Giver. His training is both painful to the body and to the heart. He learns about himself and about what the community is really like not seen by the naked eye. This story is great if you want to be amazed and are looking for a great read. The book is packed with adventure and surprise. It is full of twists and turns you will enjoy very much. It will make you stay up all night reading it and is a real page-turner. The Giver is one of the best books I have ever read and I would recommend it to anyone who likes good books and great stories.
Rating: Summary: The Giver Review: Jonas has the perfect life. There is no war, no pain, no unemployment - everyone is assigned a job in the community. Everything is taken care of. When Jonas turns twelve, he is assigned to the lonely but highly honored job of Receiver of Memory. In his new life he discovers that his Utopian lifestyle has not been around forever, that before his day there was more than this. There was war, there was pain, poverty, joy, colors, happiness; much more feeling than anyone in his lifestyle has ever experienced. The Giver, who is giving Jonas all the memories of the past, is training him so that the community can call upon Jonas when they need wisdom. Jonas later becomes confused, because he is to bear the burden of the past while the mindless drones in the community continue their 'perfect' lives. He wonders if one person is to bear this burden while the others continue not knowing anything, or if everyone should know the truth of the past. He discusses his feelings with The Giver, and they hatch a plan. Want to find out more? Read the book!
