Summary: The Giver
Review: I truly felt this book is one of the best i have ever read. I am a 15 year old female and have read it three times total. One in 4ht grade for fun, another in 7th for class, and again this year to just sort-of remember what it was all about. It made me think about how lucky we are in life to have our different styles, possesions, and feelings/emotions. - LOVED THE BOOK! ~~~jillian :))))))):):):):P :D :D:D:D:D;p

Summary: The Giver is a thought provoking book.
Review: I used this book as a literature set for my 7th graders. It was a great book ! The kids really "got into" the ramifications of a world with total equality. I would even recommend this book to high school students. The Giver is thought provoking. A worthwhile read. It forces the reader go beyond passive reading.

Summary: Not for pre-teens
Review: I was asked to read this book because it was assigned to 5th grade students. I must admit I had a variety of feelings concerning book as I read through the pages. My first reaction was of concern for the life style and some of the situations described. As I read further, I began to see some real value to the story and actually did enjoy the book. However, I do have concerns about this book being assigned to children younger than in the 7th or 8th grade. There is alot in this book which I think would be better for older children to read and discuss....not 11 year olds. Parents, if your child is asked to read this book or wants to read it on his/her own, I highly suggest that you read it first. If you think it is appropriate for your child, please take the time for discussion afterwards. This is not a light-hearted book.....

Summary: Just Excellent
Review: I was assigned an assignment: to read a newbery award book for a book report. My teacher gave it to me because she thought that I would love it. And I did. The Giver is a truly excellent book and I recommend it to everyone that enjoys reading. (and even to others that don't). I have to admit there were parts I did not understand at the begining of the book, but did as I continued to read on. It is the kind of book that just makes non-readers into people that just can't stop. As I said I urge you to read it and hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Summary: BRILLIANT...
Review: I was first introduced to "The Giver" as an 11 year old, and it has stayed with me ever since. I recently re read it because I was curious to see how my reaction would differ (now being an 18 year old). I am happy to write that I had the same feelings for this novel. It is a wonderful story with powerful imagery. In fact, there are several scenes that have never left my mind. The ending in particular is stunning.

If I had to single out a best quality I would choose the originality of it. This book did something for me that I believe all books should do: it made me truly *think.* "The Giver" served as a springing board for my own examinations of our society and the things we take for granted. It is a book filled with written emotion, and Lowry's wording is exquisite. It is descriptive while being simplistic, and the meaning behind each word is sharp and clear. Initially there is an awe; an innocent wonder. As the plotline expands the awe turns to horror and pain.

However, in the midst of it all there is a process of discovering beauty. In "The Giver" the main character learns what feelings are. In the course of reading this book, I felt as though I were being taught as well.

This is one extraordinary piece of work.

Summary: One of my favorites!~
Review: I was first introduced to this book in eighth grade, where my English teacher read it to the class, one chapter a day. I loved it then, but once I read it again on my own, I was hooked. I just graduated high school, and I've lost count of how many times I've read The Giver. Every time I read it, I just can't put it down. The story is beautifully written, and the lifestyle introduced is so intriguing and unique. This is definitely one of the most interesting and touching books I have ever read. A MUST READ!

Summary: One of the best books I have ever read.
Review: I was first told about this book from a friend who read it with her junior high daughter. I read it twice on my own before I read it with a 7th grade boy whom I tutor. This is a boy who struggles through school but found this book exciting. He even finished it on his own. This is a great feat for him. The book really made us both think and got my 7th grade tutoring student excited about reading.

Summary: A 20-year-old's point of view
Review: I was given (pun unintended) this book as a gift shortly after its publication, but never took the time to read it. Well, I finally did, so here's an adult approach to the novel. First off, I have to say that the first 150 pages of this novel are stunning. The writing is brilliant and the ideas, though simplistic (but then, this is expected for a children's novel), are provocative. I'd say the best description of this would be that this book is the one Philip K. Dick would have written, had he written a children's novel. Unfortunately, the depth of the writing collapses in the end. I guess Lowry suddenly realized she wanted to keep the book under 200 pages in length, and just quickly wrote an ending that lacks almost all of the intelligence of the earlier work. Issues simply are'nt resolved that easily. Well, all in all this is a great book, more mature than I expected (dealing with the issues of puberty and abortion certainly don't usually fall in the children's novel category), but with an ending that could have used quite a bit more polish. Recommended.

Summary: It makes you think. What if......................?
Review: I was in 8th grade when my English teacher handed my class this book and we listened to it on tape. Which makes no sense to me. Well it makes you think. What if life was really this way?? What if THESE things really did happen? I mean maybe they do happen but it's just so interesting to read or listen to this book and comprehend everything. It is a little confusing but it's good.

Summary: Phenomenal... couldn't put the book down!!!
Review: I was just amazed at how this book got me to think, "What if I had to live under these cicumstances?", or "What if this happened to our world?" I was literally on the edge of my seat reading through Jonas' trials and tribulations, but was surprised at the uncertainty of what happened at the end. Seriously, there needs to be a sequel to this novel. Most extraordinairy book that everyone MUST read!
