Rating: Summary: Interesting point of view... Review: I am a 30's something female just starting to read Lois Lowry again. This book gripped me and I could not put it down. It is so far fetched from society that I wanted to know what happened next. It is a neat story and I really enjoyed it. I did not like the way it ended, but you need to read her other book The Messenger when you are done.
Rating: Summary: The Giver, an Inspirational Book Review: I am a 8th grader at a small school and did not read at all orat least for my own interest until last summer. Last summer I pickedthe giver from my book list and decided to read it. When I first started reading the book it was confusing but I continued to read. It took me three days to finish the book. When finished I was speechless, I wanted to read it again. It was a kind of book I had never read before. Since reading the giver I have read about ten books ( which is very good for me)with excitement and enthusiasm and plan to do read more. The Giver opened many doors for me, one I have explained already, my new love for reading. The other, gave me a sense of what I want to do when I am older, I want to be a writer. I give this book five stars and even more if I could.
Rating: Summary: ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! Review: I am a college student who read this book for a Literacy Development course in Education. It was INCREDIBLE! I recommend it to adults as well as children. Even adults can truly get a great deal out of it. If your child has a copy, borrow it right away!
Rating: Summary: Review for The Giver Review: I am a fifth grade teacher and read this novel silently during Reading Workshop. Each day, reading workshop would last longer and longer because I was so absorbed in the book. Many of my students inquired about this book while I was reading it during Reading Workshop. I told everyone who asked that it was an absolutely wonderful book; however, I also only recommended the book to those students who had an open mind. The book has some deep topics that might frighten some parents when they find their child is reading this book. However, as a parent, myself, I wouldn't discourage my own child from reading it. I love books that make you think. This is one of those books.
Rating: Summary: Good book, but sometimes a little bit overdone. Review: I am a high school freshmen and we read this for freshman english. I told my mom that we were going to read this and she didn't seem very happy. I asked her why and she said that it was a good book but didn't think that we should be reading it in a christian school. Why you might ask, is because they like to over do their community just a little bit! Almost to much! Anyway, my suggestions are to read it but remember who you are!!!!!
Rating: Summary: My students love this book! Review: I am a middle school teacher, and my 8th graders read this book each winter. I love the discussions that it produces! We do a group community project after we finish the reading and the students create their own utopias. There is so much here, and the ambiguous ending is a great discussion itself! I will probably use this book in my classroom for a long time!
Rating: Summary: A great book to have your class read, or to read to them. Review: I am a school teacher (6-8 Lang. Arts and Reading). I was looking for books to supplement The Diary of Anne Frank, something to help our kids understand what was meant by a "perfect society". 1984 seemed to 'old' for our kids to grasp and understand, but The Giver is easy to read understandable, and interesting. I would recommend it for any junior high teacher to use in their class.
Rating: Summary: College Senior says EXCELLENT book. Review: I am a senior at UNC-Chapel Hill and I'm in a Young Adult Fiction class. So this semester we're reading many YA books. And we get to choose our own as long as we end up reading across the genre's of YA books.I choose The Giver because of the reviews I read on this website and I thought it was only appropriate after reading the book to contribute myself. This is an EXCELLENT book and I don't care if you're 8 years old or 80, you will gain something from it. The way Lois Lowry shows this world of "sameness" makes you physically ill sometimes but at the same time frightened because you can actually see our own world in bits and pieces of it. With the way she portrays "the community" it allows you to get more and more out of it the older you are. If you aren't aware of certain things, you don't understand them as much as a young reader, but the plot and story are so well written you still get a lot out of the book. If you are older and do understand, her statements are even more profound. Definitely worth your time and effort. I couldn't put it down once I read the first chapter.
Rating: Summary: Noval Study Review: I am a sixth grader (...). when we read the book "The Giver" as a novel study in class, I began to get into it. Everyday I would look foward to reading it and to find out what happens next. This book is suspenseful and surprising at every chapter. There are twists and turns waiting around every bend, the book is a great because it's detailed and very well thought over, it's also very emotinal, there are no times when you feel "normal" you're either about to cry or you're jumping for joy. When you read about the main charecter, Jonas, you feel as if you where right there with him, being embarresed, being afraid and even feeling his pain as he watches a "release". The book somehow, teaches you not to always take things the way that they are and to try to change it, I think it tought me not to be afraid of being different. When Jonas begins to see colors it makes a different world for him, a more beautiful world. Then Jonas learns about the true feeling of love which is a wonderful feeling, which we sometimes take for granted, when Jonas gets feelings there not all happy, some are cruel and evil, such as hate. Jonas feels anger and love at the sametime. (...) So, please you owe it to yourself to give this book a< chance.
Rating: Summary: review - a bit confused Review: I am a student that was assigned to read The Giver for class. The first night we recived the book I read it in whole. I couldnt seem to put the book down, the details pulled me in, and there was an element of suspense that wouln't let me go. As I was reading, I decided that this book was one of my favorites. As I reached the end of the book, I was unbelivably dissapointed. This book, which was full of detail, had just left an ending out to the open. Had jonas died? Was he dreaming? What happened? It seemes no one quite knows. If you love a book with a great ending, dont read this one.
