Rating: Summary: For Readers12 and under Only Review: Written at a 6th grade reading level, The Giver has very little literary or stylistic value. It is filled with cliched rhetoric such as "intelligence" "integrity", "courage", and "wisdom" -- words fit for a middle school graduation. Lowry creates a futuristic world that seems too much like a follow up of Orwell's *1984*, and is really a very bland version of *Brave New World*. The themes and ideas can hardly be called original. Though for a children's book, it is quite valuable in its effective warning against modern society's trend toward regimentation and sterilization. As for anyone over 12 years of age, read Brave New World if you want intellectual stimulation.
Rating: Summary: A fictional school lesson Review: You can compare this book with an (interesting) school lesson, it is interesting and you learn that our world is better than their community.
Rating: Summary: There isn't a sequel for a reason... Review: You can't improve upon perfection, and that is what Lowry has created in The Giver. This is one of the most universal novels I have ever read (and reread). Each time I read it, and as I get older, I find new meaning in the novel. This is not just a book for the young, as I believe it is recomended for, because the deeper meaning and some of the adult themes cannot be truly appreciated by a younger audiance. However, I for one read it when I was 10 for the first time and that is when I first fell in love with it. I continue to read it every couple of year, at least. --Some have addressed the fact that the story is simple and "scifiish". well, frankly, it is science fiction and it is a simple story. The language is simple, that is why the reading level is so low. And the facets that offend some adult readers will mostly pass by a child reader. And if not, they are not concepts that are not prevalent in life. This book won an award for a reason, because it is sound literature that proves many points about the society we live in. So in conclusion, I supose this book is not going to impress the conservative crowd, or those who think children need to be protechted from books. I for one am still in awe.
Rating: Summary: The Giver, An Exceptional Story Review: You start the book watching an eleven year old boy, Jonas, who is excited about a coming of age celebration and getting to know his family. After the celebration a stunned and nervous Jonas starts his training for the future and begins to learn that life isn't quite as perfect in his town as people would have you believe. Lois Lowry paints the picture of this world, and its characters, so vividly that you lose yourself and find it almost impossible to put the book down!
Rating: Summary: Pleasantville???? Review: You think they got the idea for the movie from this book? I loved it...and guess what...I'm 37. Ambiguous endings aren't necessarily my favorate kind, but I appreciate the flexibility this story leaves the reader. You're allowed to come to your own conclusion. If you're looking for a book that might just get your kid interested in reading, I recommend this one. Of course, they'll have to enjoy science fiction. Good story and a FAST read. Two important qualities for young readers.

Rating: Summary: An interesting book Review: „The Giver", a book review by Johannes and Vitali, two German pupils in the 10th grade After we read the book in the English class at our school we'd like to give you a book review with our opinion about this book and we hope that this might help you. Jonas lives in a community where you are always observed and where you have to do everything you are told. At first he is happy in his community. He has friends and has a usual life as a citizen in his family unit. He lives together with his sister lily his father and his mother. In the community there are different ceremonies for every age. After the Ceremony of twelve Jonas is declared to be the new Receiver of Memory and starts his training with getting memories of many eras before he lived. He gets memories of war, elephant hunts, snow and riding a sled, sunshine and such things. But very important is that he learns to see colours. That's important because no one of the citizens can see colours. In this world they achieved "sameness". They got neither weather nor any differences between them. When Jonas begins to discover the dark side of the community he is in fear of it. He begins to see, that nothing is as perfect as it seems. He discovers that in this community many people are murdered every day when they break a rule or when they got to old. When the foster child Gabriel of his family unit shall be killed he decides to escape with him to "Elsewhere", a different and better world. The opinion of Johannes: At first I found this book boring but when we read further parts of the book it got more and more interesting then I began to read this book with more interest and I began to read it very fast. In the end I found that book interesting and informative but I think that it is not really good written. The opinion of Vitali: I found it interesting to read about a book which deals with a different community and with other rules then we have. But I can't imagine that no one apart from the Receiver can see colours or hear music. First I found the book a little bit confusing, but then it was clearer. The book is well written but for a German pupil it is a little bit difficult to understand all the vocabulary. Also I think that the ending is felicitous, because it makes you think further, what could happen.
