Summary: How this has become a classic is beyond me
Review: When I read this book for the Children's Lit class that I teach, I was horrified. Not only is the story ineptly constructed, but it also portrays the blatant manipulation of the child protagonist by the very person who's supposed to train him for his designated job. I had had high hopes for this book when I started reading it, but clearly Lois Lowry needs some instruction in how to create a functional alternate worldview. Her utopian world makes little sense because she fails to explore it in enough depth. I think if the book had been another 100 pages or so, it might have been worth the reading, but as it is, I'm horrified by both the popularity of the novel and by the uncritical manner in which it is approached by teachers and students alike.

Summary: not what I want to read in my spare time
Review: When I read this book I was in sixth grade. First of all I had a horrible time figureing out what was going on in some parts of its twisted plot. This was certainly the most depressing book I have ever read. When I sit down to read I want to be enjoying myself and this book really did not do that. Finally it is long. It seemed like it took forever to get through this relatively short book.

Summary: LOVED IT!
Review: When I read this the first time in grade school I loved every word in it! It really let my imagination fly as I pictured how life would be in a completely controlled "utopian" society. I found the ending extremely profound and even CRIED! When I read Brave New World in high school I couldn't help but make comparisons. Though it has been a while since I last read The Giver I can't help but to recommend this truly AWESOME book.

Summary: (G)this (I) book (V) is (E) great!! (R)
Review: When I saw this book the first, 'perfect world' I thought this book's story might be magic stuff. But I knew this book is not and this is new for me.
From now I'm going to tell you how I felt and ow I think this book was.
First, this book's story and organization are very good. However all books have some problem I think. There wasn't main or many problems but this book doesn't have much instruction or explanation. Like when I see some things that are strange to me, I just could think that's just because this book's background's different as ours. I know this writer tried to make some new story.
Second, thanks to the writer Lois Lowry who wrote this book. Because when I read this book, I felt like I'm being in Jonas' world and I always wonder what will happen after.
Third, Jonas' world that she made was interesting and gave me a chance to think about that type of story. I guess no one's made or thought that type of world or things. Because since now, all books' main story was our world. Like how we live or how we think. If she didn't wrote this book, we couldn't think about that world.
So if I rate this book I will give 4.5 stars.

Summary: Just Imagine. You have the power.
Review: When I was a teenager, I wonder why I can feel the world I'm not sure it's really exist. We have the power of imagination which makes me feel something we can't really see, hear, touch, and somebody-we-care-for's feeling.

It's sometimes painful to feel something. It makes us to love somebody and love, whether it's successful or failing one, brings us heartpain. If we want to avoid such heartpain, we must avoid love and feeling. But if we would do so, the world would turn into a colorless one and music would be lost.

This story tells us what would happen if we avoid love and feeling and try hard to abolish all these memory connected to love and feeling.

Just imagine, there's no memory of love and feeling. You have the power. And look around the world you exist in. It will look beautiful to you.

Summary: A good read...
Review: When I was assigned to read "The Giver" by Louis Lowry, I was having to actually do it. I usually hate reading for school and tend to put it off until the last minute but I had a snow day and decided to start it. I read the entire book in one seating. I really enjoyed it! Some parts were kind of unnerving but I liked the concept of a "perfect" world. It's very interesting to think about. It makes you imagine how the future will be. I would definately read this book again. It's short but has a powerful message behind it.

Summary: Very good!
Review: When I was assigned to read this book in my literature class, I was very skeptical. My teacher kept saying, "It's kind of a sci-fi story, but it' not." So not only did I not want to read the book, I thought my teacher was a bit loony. But, for my education's sake, I forced myelf to start reading it. I had it finished 2 months ahead of when the class was scheduled to finish. It is a very good and well-written book. I enjoyed it a lot and it definitely keeps your interest, because you never know what will happen next.

Summary: Great for teens and adults alike!
Review: When I was in fourth grade, this book was read to me by my English teacher. I liked it then, but couldn't really get into it. I understood it, but I just couldn't grasp the emotions needed to fully enjoy the book. Now, in the 8th grade, we are reading it for an assignment. I have only 3 words--I LOVE IT!! We were assigned to read 1 chapter each night. I finished the book in less than 2 days. Once you pick it up, it's glued to your hands until you finish it, and then the basic idea is glued to your mind forever. I would recommend this book for anyone over the age of 12 or 13. Anyone under these ages simply would not be able to understand the content of the book fully. All of the emotions that Jonas is feeling, the conflict that is brought about by "sameness"--you HAVE to be able to understand these concepts to enjoy the book. I strongly recommend this book. And to Lois Lowry--keep up the great work!
