Rating: Summary: New world with dark secrets Review: The novel "The Giver", written by Lois Lowry was written in 1994, and in the same year it got the prestigious "Newbery Medal". The novel is about a twelve year old boy, called Jonas, who lives with his parents and his younger sister in a future world, where everything is O.K., or seems to be so. But when he gets his assignment, he starts to realize the lie of his society and discovers the dark secrets of the past more and more. The book has some positive and negative aspects, for example the sentences are not too long and often easy to understand and on the other hand the vocabulary is sometimes really difficult. But all in all this book is the best book I read in school. I like the plot of this science fiction story because it is not like many other films and books with aliens and starships or something like that. Maybe this story shows us the developement of ouf society in 50 or 100 years. So we should care about the future, the future of our children, so that nobody can be manipulated in so many ways and individual life won't get lost.
Rating: Summary: The Giver review Review: The novel 'The Giver' is about a community without colour, war, love or pain. Everything is the same and under control by 'The Elders'. There are no choices and everybody is assigned a role in the community. When Jonas becomes 12 he is going to receive special training from the Giver. The Giver translates Jonas all the memories and the pleasure of life. There is no turning back for Jonas. As he discovers the secret of the community, he wants to go to Elsewhere. I suggest that book to readers who like to be left wondering and thinking, because if you read this book, that's you will be doing by the end. *** www.....de.vu ***

Rating: Summary: The novel The Giver was a great book. Review: The novel The Giver by Lois Lowry is a very good book. The reason why I think this book is so good to read is because it giveslots of good details about the main characters and the community. Next, in the beginning of the book I reed that there was a kid named Jonas that always saw unidentified aircrafts flying over their community which I didn't think was so interesting in the first chapter. I think the author should of wrote different things that would have made the first chapter sound more interesting because when I reed the first chapter i found it rather boring but then when I reed more and got to the middle of the book it got more interesting because it had more action and other stuff. Then When I got to the end of the book I wanted to read it over and over because it was so good but I didn't get a chance to. What I really want to know about this novel is if something really happened like this before.
Rating: Summary: A society filled with diversity. Review: The novel The Giver, by Lois Lowry, made me see the differences that are contributed to each society. This book showed how a young boy grows up in a society where there was no crime, hate, or violence. At certain ages, children were given gifts that represented how old they were. Some received bikes while others received ribbons for their hair. No one was jealous of one another. Everyone was equal. As time passed on, the young boy, Jonas, was given the job of the Giver. He could see and feel things that no one else in his society could acquire. Colors, textures, pain and happiness were among the many items Jonas gained throughout his session with the original Giver. As I read this book, my thoughts allowed me to see how different my society is compared to Jonas's. Living in a society where everyone is equal affected my understanding of how differently people live. This book should be read with the idea that everyone has different ways of surviving in the world. Personally, I would like to witness less crime and hate towards people in my society. The Giver will show the reader the many differences societies have in the world.
Rating: Summary: What does the word perfect mean to you? Review: The novel The Giver, entailed many aspects of every day life in a typical "perfect" or utopian society. While reading this novel it appeared that this society was to set in its ways. They had every aspect of a child's life written in stone before they were even born into the society. This appeared to be a little strange that all of this information would be complete before the child even existed. This is one of the many aspects that occurs in a utopian society. The novel had one main character, named Jonas that the story was based around. Jonas belonged to a family unit, this included his mother, father and his sister Lily. Each family unit only consisted of a mother, father and a son or daughter. All of this information is written out before the parents and children reach a certain age. I don't know about you but to me this doesn't seem normal. This novel is highly recommend to audiences of all ages. As you read the book you should think of all the so called normal things in our society and realize that in the utopian society these things would never be heard of. It is also a great novel to compare how other societies live, as compared to our democratic society.

Rating: Summary: Overall I liked this book. Review: The only parts in the book that I did not like were the begining and end. The begining was to confusing and I did not understand it until about chapter six. The ending was okay but that was not the way that I wanted it to end.
Rating: Summary: An excellent book, but... Review: The other reviews here will tell you all that needs to be said about this book. What still needs to be said, however, is that when this book was introduced to me in classroom in 5th grade, most of the concepts were foreign, unclear, and the writing style made it very difficult to understand for the average 10-11 year old. Read it maybe a year or two later to get the full effect, or better yet: read it multiple times. Not to discredit anyone who IS 10-11 years old, or even younger, who appreciates and comprehends the issues and dynamics of this book, but it seems to me that the average 5th grader is more concerned with R.L. Stine these days...
