Rating: Summary: An book I will never forget in my life Review: At first when i had to read The Giver for my english class, I was "This will be boring!". When I came back from school, I started reading...and i couldn't stop! This is a unique story, the people are all the same. They live in a world with no music, or color or differences or true love. They take a pill to make them act like robots. The community gives them a job and a spouse and a family. They get their jobs at the 12th year. There is peace, but they don't have almost any feelings! Jonas is choosed to be the Receiver. He will have all the memories of The Giver. He will have all the memories of the old times (colors, love, pain, loneliness, hapiness...), so he can be the wiseman of the community, he will make the best decisions for the peace of the community. But only one person cannot handle all these feelings and he feels apart from the others, he feels he can't fit in anymore, like when he was still a child. He grows too old for a kid of his age and the other kids don't understand him. Then he learns the end of every person released in to the "Community's Elsewhere". But he decides to control his own future. With the help of the Giver, he discovers that there is a different "elsewhere" for everyone, some place beyond the community, where the past, the present and the future are. This is a wonderful book, that made me smile and cry. I will never forget this book, who has strong feelings to communicate to the reader. I stopped reading sometimes, for a minute, and look around me, enjoy the colors, the music and the happiness of be free of my own feelings. This book is one of the best books I have ever read, i really love this book and I think everyone should read it.
Rating: Summary: what a great book! Review: At first, like all books it was kind of boring, but then later on, it got really interesting and made me want to read on. I think the book had a great ending because everything seemed to just fall into place. READ IT READ IT READ IT!
Rating: Summary: The Giver Review: At Northside Elementry in Ms.Merediths 6th grade class we read the book called "The Giver".It was a very confusing but fun and an interesting book to read for a novel.I would recommend this book to people that were at least 11 and up.It was a really good book, because it talks about another community and everything is different their than it is in real life, their is no color in the comunity. In every family their has to be two kids Female and male and a mom and dad. The elders of the comunity choose your job when you turn 12 years old. They have Certain age groups like the 6's and their birthday can be on a certain day but that group would all turn the same age at the same time. You should read this book. Cesily T.
Rating: Summary: I think that it was a very understanding book. Review: At sometimes it was hard to understand but I liked it. Read this book only if you're 14 or older. Good luck!
Rating: Summary: A Book With No Ending Review: At the age of thirteen, I read "The Giver." I thought the "Giver" was a great book. It is a bit of a fantasy story, but I liked it anyway. It was a confusing yet interesting book by Lois Lowry about a boy living in a community, in the statge of "sameness." I couldn't put the book down once I started reading and getting into the book. All together, I loved this book and I recommend this book to anyone of any age.
Rating: Summary: The Giver Review: At the beginning of The Giver by Lois Lowry, Jonas, one of the main characters, and an eleven feels apprehensive on page one. The other main characters are the Giver who is the Reciever of Memory, and Gabriel who is a newborn and is having trouble sleeping in the nurturing center. The setting is somewhat plain, colorless, and sameness meaning no one but the reciever of memory has books, no one has individual birthdays, and everyone sees black and white except for the reciever of memory and the reciever in training. At the beginning of the book Jonas feels apprehensive due to the age ceremony, he gets selected for the reciever of memory and later on doesn't like his community or his father. Here is one of the sentences in the story,"The daily training continued and now it always included pain." I highly recommend that you read this book for three reasons. Lois Lowry fills minds with interesting facts. She makes it interesting. And she makes you want to read on. (...). The main theme of this book is that sameness is not important.
Rating: Summary: The end was a bit of a downer. Review: At the end of the book hod no great end at all. The rest of the book was very nice and easy to follow. I think that all children should read this book.
Rating: Summary: Very Compelling! Review: At the end of this school year, our last novel we read was The Giver. We had to read it for our 'Futuristic' or 'Science Fiction' unit. As our teacher explained it, we all dreaded reading this. The first few chapters made us ALL more interested. Just reading about a 'Perfect' world made Jonas' lifestyle desirable by all of us. Yet, as the book progresses, we just slightly find out more about his life. Jonas lives a pretty normal life..in his world until his 12th Year Ceremony. He gets selected...as the NEXT Giver! As of that moment he is in training...and his whole life will change. There is no violence, love, pain, and other things. Not to give away too much, the book gives the definition of Perfection in Life. Something we will probably never accomplish. Read it, and journey through Jonas' life and community. Keep it in mind that it his world is PERFECT, and most of the time perfect isnt that good...
Rating: Summary: I don't agree the rule of the community!!! Review: At the first time I read this book, I was very confused because their society is very different from reality and my stereotype. They have special rules own such as assignment. When they are 12 years old, they will be able to assignment each other, and Jonas received the Receiver. When he got the instruction of assignment, it can break the whole thing from community rule, even though he can lie. When Jonas trained by the Giver, he was surprised because of new experiences; for instance, colors, sunshine, pain, Anyway, I would like to say it is really wrong idea the rule of Jonas¡¯s community. There is not any release like my society, and somebody can kill other people because they couldn¡¯t do anything in the society. And they are learning something when they are young and they do that job until they are old. Then if they couldn¡¯t do that job anymore, they removed. I think the community is necessary to working the society. However, this is really wrong idea. So, I don¡¯t agree the plot of the story about society rules; however the book is so fantastic for me, and wonderful!
Rating: Summary: The story is imaginative, but the ending is not satisfying. Review: Because Lois Lowry received a Newbery Award for this book I began reading with high expectations. They fell flat. I was very disappointed with this book. I am not a big fan of fantasy/science fiction and this may have been one of the problems that I had. The story is highly imaginative and very well told, but the ending was not satisfying. If you enjoy science fiction/fantasy you may enjoy this better than I did.
