Rating: Summary: Reading this book is an "Interesting" experience. Review: As a child, my younger sister once said, "Interesting is an interesting word." In that context, "The Giver" is a VERY interesting book.I've been reading for decades. My youngest daughter has been reading a few years. After reading "The Giver", she was anxious for me to read it. She wanted, perhaps even needed, to discuss it with someone. This was a first, and I obliged. Some books tell compelling stories. Others exhibit artistry with language. Some do both. "The Giver" does something else too. I'm not sure what it is, but it was there, you could feel it. If you're looking for an unusual reading experience, read this one.
Rating: Summary: Interesting and Insightful Book Review: As a junior in college in a children's literature course and as a future educator, I found this book very interesting. It could be very useful in a classroom full of young adults. Lois Lowry helps an individual's imagination and creative side run wild with the plot of this book.
Rating: Summary: An excellent book for our modern society Review: As a seventh grade English teacher, I am always on the lookout for books my students will WANT to read. This year we read The Giver. And while not every student enjoyed the book, many were touched by its themes. This is a book that brings up many issues our society struggles with today: drug abuse, depression and pain medications, euthanasia, abortion, and the power of government. I believe every young person should read The Giver--if for no other reason than to be provoked to thought about these issues.
Rating: Summary: A book that will make readers use their total imagination. Review: As a teacher, I am always looking for books that will make my students want to read. The Giver has never failed me. This book should be read aloud with younger students (4th & 5th grade) so that some of the issues can be discussed together. The reaction that I get from this novel is always enthusiastic. Students bring to this book their own experiences and knowledge. They become very opinionated by the end and everyone has their own version of "how it ended". One of my very favorite, so much so that I hope Lois Lowery writes a sequel. ( And maybe a movie to go along with it!)
Rating: Summary: Truly a Human Experience Review: As a young adult myself reading this book, made me feel that life is not just your neighborhood. There in the future could be worlds like the one depicted in "The Giver". This novel had deep plot, never ending rising action. The story is worthy of more than five stars and would be an asset to all young adults to read and have a better understanding of themeselves.
Rating: Summary: A chilling realistic novel of a possible future Review: As an eighth grader, The Giver opened a whole new world of possibilities for me. Its really a page-turner. The thought involved in creating this book must have been marvelous! It provokes so much thought! The reader will think about the book many times after they have finished. The chilling reality of what could become of our future, is spine-tingling! Lowery creates a colorful cast of characters in this thrilling novel.
Rating: Summary: Beautiful Story Ends In Disapointment Review: As I began this story I really enjoyed it. I love stories involving utopias and this book embodies such a society perfectly. But as you round towards the end of the book in utter excitement the story takes a turn that I found disapointing. If I had stopped reading this book half way through, even three forths of the way through, I would say it was one of the best books I have ever read; but after the ending I have to say that though this book was enjoyable and highly recomendable I wish it could have ended differently.
Rating: Summary: Lois Lowery's "The Giver", is a wonderfully written book. Review: As I came upon the book "the Giver", I was a little reluctant to read a grade level 7 book, I decided to anyhow.I was utterly surprised at how much the book exceded my expectations. I found it to be,as I put above,a wonderfully written book.I loved every page of it. Although the vocabulary was limited,I still found to be intellectually stimulating and easy to follow. For me the ending was confusing but I liked it anyhow. For me Jonas didn't die but had one of his wonderful " memories". For those of reading this I know you have probably read the book many times,I urge you to read it again.
Rating: Summary: I think the giver was... Review: As I read through the first few pages I felt kind of confused because what I thought the book was going to be about it wasn't really about that at all. Then as I hit the mid pages I liked and understood it. I think that the book was exciting and you were always wondering what was going to happen next. It wasn't such a fighting war type of book, but it also wasn't such a mellow, comfy type of book. I like how the author wrote each chapter. He used very clever and interesting words to describe what each character was feeling emotionally, physically, and mentally. Over all I think I liked and enjoyed the book because I didn't understand everything right when it happened, but by the end it all had woven together.
Rating: Summary: unexpected Review: As I received The Giver I expected another book like all the others that were required for school- boring and useless. Over this christmas break we were told to read the first 10 chapters and even though I'm a person who loves books I reluctantly picked up the giver on friday night, the first night of our break. Surprisanly, after the first few chapters, I could not put it down, and even though my teacher asked us not to read any further, I finished the entire book in one sitting, as I was too absorbed in it to put it down. The Giver teaches life lessons that are sure to grap your heart.
