Summary: Perfect Society, Not So Perfect
Review: The Giver by Los Lowry was a very clever way to say nothing can be perfect. The book is about Jonas, aboy who lives in a society where there are no choices, color, or feelings. Almost everything is done for them: their jobs are picked by a committee or elders, and their food is delivered by dilvery men, but when Jonas is assigned to be the receiver of memory, a job where you are given memories of love, he runs away to a community with all the things he has been living with out. I enjoyed the book a lot because of its messafe: everything has a flaw. The book taught ne that nothing can be perfect and that I don't want to be perfect. I enjoyed the book to the very end because I enjoyed learning about Jonas' society. I think the most interesting charecteristic of the novel was the ending. The author left you to decide what was going to happen to Jonas. This ending was unusual, so at first, I did not like it because I really wanted to learn what happend to Jonas, but then, i realized what she was doing, and I started to like the ending due to its peculiarity. That is why I am giving it five stars.

Summary: a utopia?
Review: The Giver by Louis Lowry was an exceptional novel about the true nature of a utopian society. The society that the main character, 12-year-old Jonas, lives in is completely devoid of the emotions and pleasures of life in order to shield them from the bad points. However when Jonas is selected to receive all of the memories of the "old" world, his safe life is thrown into turmoil. Through this child's eyes, Lowry poses the question as to whether this utopia is actually superior to society today. Yes, there is no pain, war, hunger, ect., but in order to cause this "sameness" the people are forced to live in a world as if sedated, devoid of strong emotions, and ultimately the freedom of choice.

Lowry attempts to answer her own question in the denouement of the novel, which although in a minority, I thought was an appropriate way to end. Since it does not supply a definite answer, she allows the reader to draw their own conclusions. It would have seemed trite to me if there were a simplistic end to the novel, since the ideal of a utopia is such a complex concept.

Summary: The Giver shows us how important memories are
Review: The Giver by. Lois Lowry

The Giver shows us that memories are important to all individuals and societies. In the book the community that Jonas live in is strictly controlled by a group of elders. The citizens have very little decision making to do, all aspects of everyday life is controlled for them, in the book it was called "Sameness". Everything was the same because the citizens had no memories of what life was like before they converted their life to "Sameness". These memories help people perceive the world and without them they are not really experiencing a fulfilling life. Jonas found this out after he had been passed on memories by the Giver, he realized that his life had not been whole and fulfilling without "first generation memories". Memories play and important part in a culture because they make each culture distinct. In the book the culture that Jonas lived in did not differ very much from the other communities in the surrounding area. Part of a culture is its folklore and stories of that kind and these stories are passed on from one generation after another, there is no such passing on of information to the next generation in the book and this creates somewhat of a separation of each generation, even though the citizens do not realize this. Folklore give a culture color and wholeness and since part of folklore is memory the society in the book did not have the color and wholeness since there was no memories that were not "first generation", there was no color and wholeness in the community.

Summary: The Giver
Review: The Giver By: Louis Lowry

"The Giver" is a book of the future where all life's decisions are made for you. All of the world problems have been solved and the people live in the dark and are told nothing. Everything is assigned to each person from parents to job occupations. A good example is when Jonas the Main character is talking with is Father and Mother. They are talking to him about how soon he will be given his job assignment for life at age 12. He recalls back to when he was assigned his bike and even when he was assigned his comfort toy. Then his parents tell him how they were excited when they were assigned there jobs, and then they tell him how they felt when they were assigned his sister "Lily". They said they knew it would a girl because that is what they applied for and there application was accepted, and how the Commissioners of the town assigning everything with the help of the "Giver". It would soon be Jonas's turn to be assigned his occupation. I would recommend this book to people who like things of the future. It is a very scary environment where everything is monitored. It is a good book.

Summary: The Giver
Review: The Giver exposes the dark side of trying to create a perfect world. On the bright side, everyone is harmonious and obedient, there is no poverty and no want or need, but with light, there's shadow. The main character Jonas has led a sheltered life of ease. Upon his twelfth birthday he is assigned his job that he will do for the rest of his life as everyone else will, he becomes "The Receiver of Memories". The role is one of high honor and Jonas accepts it with a twinge of sadness but with pride. As he trains for his new role in the community he begins to learn of the horrors of human history and the present. His perspective on the world is forever altered. He must decide his fate, but is it the right one?
This book is fantastic and I'm very glad I spent the time to read it. The Giver offers a view into what would go wrong if one tried to create a utopian society. Lois Lowry does a wonderful job of creating a world that the reader feels involved in. She sets up contrasts and foil that keep a reader enthralled in the story. The Giver is definitely a book that everyone should add to their library.

Summary: This book shines a new light on life and it's possibilities.
Review: THE GIVER gives the reader an insight on lifes possibilities and questions the power of authority. Lois Lowry uses her incredible creativity a whole new world in which her charecters live. The society has rules and regulations that everyone must live and abide by or they will be "released" from the community. This is a heart touching story of a young boy and his quest for truth and freedom from the harsh judgements of his life. I would recommend this book to every age because it includes creativity for the young ones and a strong and complex sense of understanding and wit for adults. This is one of my favorit books and I Promise it will be one of yours too.
