Rating: Summary: Give Me More Giver! Review: Lois Lowry hits another one out of the park with THE GIVER. She gives us a wonderful taste of how boring life would be if we were all the same and had life decisions made for us. The community is as boring as watching coal turning to diamonds, basically sameness. The book was done so well as Lowry out does her self this time while portraying a boy with a lost soul. Jonas (main character) is growing up in a world of no terror or fear, no hunger. Until he is given the job assignment as Receiver of Memory, he likes the life. As he sees all of these wonderful things that were before, he panics. This is easily understandable. If I were living in this world of no love or color or memory I would panic if I saw memories of holidays and love. He is too stressed, so he runs off to a journey of self-discovery.
Rating: Summary: one of the best Review: Lois Lowry is a great writer. Its a book you dont want to put down. If you think that the world we live in is bad you should read The Giver, cause they dont have all the things we have it has no color nothing you dont even get to have a opinion. If you read this book you will have a differnt perspective of our community. But one thing I didn't like about the book was the ending it should of told more at what happened to Jonas and Gabe.
Rating: Summary: This Book is THE BEST book I have ever read Review: Lois Lowry is an exceptional writer. Many of her books, including The Giver carry a deeper meaning than the actual story presents. I found The Giver to be a book that really explains what a society would be like without the capability to feel emotion, or change. This book is an EXCELLENT book for a book report, (contrary to another review) because it gives the child a chance to think and really get the deeper meaning of the book. I would give it six stars if I could.
Rating: Summary: This book is the best ever! Review: Lois Lowry is the author of the wonderful book, The Giver. This book takes place in the future at a small community were everything is the same. Nobody has feelings in this community either. Jonas and his family go to the ceramony were Jonas awaits his life assignment. He is sitting there and they skip his number. Jonas doesn't know what to think. After the very last number is called they make a special announcement that Jonas will get the assignment of the Giver. Eveyone cheers. Jonas learns alot about the past years. I think that this book should be read to teens all around the nation. It is a delight and it is fun and easy to read. The author did a great job and I recommand this book to everyone. Go out to your local bookstore and pick up the book The Giver!
Rating: Summary: Lois Lowry's- The Giver Review: Lois Lowry puts such great detail in this book, it makes you feel like you are with Jona. It is weird to read about a different world, especially Jona's. The "sameness" in their world just makes the book more interenting. Jona goes through many changes and has lots of emotions throughout the book. I reccomend this book to any grade above 5th. This is a GREAT reader! Jona has the most mportant job in the whole community because "The Giver" is the only one who sees the world as it really is. The Giver gets to see everything in a different way, which makes the person change entirely now that they know the truth. I could not put this book down! The plot just makes you want to keep reading and reading it!
Rating: Summary: A BREATHTAKING NOVEL Review: Lois Lowry really put the power in the pen on this one I give her 5 stars and 2 thumbs up, it would be 3 but I only have 2 thumbs. The Giver is a classic. A good thing about the story is that everyone is safe. On the other hand, no one is able to live his or her own life, and that's what makes the story good. So treat your self and get a copy. (J.S.)
Rating: Summary: A great content ... Nevertheless easy to understand Review: Lois Lowry tells an amazing story about a young boy called Jonas who lives in a world where everything is under control. Everything is planned out for everyone and if someone breaks a rule, he "gets released" from the community. On the day of the big "Ceremony of Twelve", Jonas is selected to be the next 'Receiver of Memories' - the person who gathers the memories of the past. This job includes pain, sorrow, and happiness. Jonas realizes that the world he lives in is not as great as everybody thought.'The Giver' gives an important message to the reader: Living in a world where there is independence and choices is better than living in a world where everything seems to be perfect. The exceptional feature of this story is that everything is written as easy as possible and sometimes you get the impression that it is just fun but this book is one of those with the highest level of hidden social critism.
Rating: Summary: Lizzy's Review of The Giver Review: Lois Lowry wrote one of the best books of all time called "The Giver." The setting of "The Giver" is in a small village with no freedom. The people there do not have a choice of who they marry, what their job is and if they have children or not. Their world is so controlled that there is no pain. There are no choices. Their lives are controlled by other people. They have certian things they must do. The rules are strict. If you break three rules you get "released" (killed). If you are born different or special you get released. They want everybody to be the same. When young people have crushes on people they must take pills. They take pills because they do not want men/boys and women/girls to fall in love or get too attached because chances are they will not get married to each other. The word love is an inappropriate word in their society. A long time ago everybody that was living in the society chose sameness as their way of life. From then on everybody is supposed to be the same. One of the very odd things about this society is that they see in black and white. Another odd thing is that they have never heard or seen animals. One day Jonas, the main character, who is a very intelligent boy, finally turned twelve. He went to the "Ceremony of the Twelves." He got his job. Jonas got the most important job. Its called "the Reciever of Memory." The Reciever's job is to take in all of the memories from the previous Reciever. Jonas did not like his world. One day he decided to leave and go elsewhere... "The Giver" is a very interesting and expressive book. I recommend that you read it. It is a book filled with feelings.
Rating: Summary: The Giver-all about! Review: Lois Lowry's "The Giver" is about a world without emotions and truth and about Jonas, a twelve-year-old boy who lives inside this world. He is chosen to be the "Receiver of Memory" and works together with "The Giver" to reveal the truth about their existence. Lois Lowry's style is not too difficult to read and the links are easy to understand. However, she knows how to present a book, in which she wants to make people think about themselves and the world around them but is never getting boring. By writing the book in that way she creates a wide readership and does not stay on a small group where the age chooses the reader. The book deals with an interesting idea of moral and ethic and tries, from my point-of-view, to stimulatepeople to think again and not only live their lives but also look to the left and the right and the rest of the world and the rest of each ones own world. When everyone knows what happens around, things cannot change without the choice of the people. In fact, the first parts of the book are far too unexciting and unsurprising but around the 12th chapter, the book becomes more and more a psychological one with deeper meanings. For myself, it is a book which is a must-read but more than something to beat a bored evening. The Miracle
Rating: Summary: Lois Lowry Gives the Best Any "Giver" of Literature Can Give Review: Lois Lowry's "The Giver" is set in a time and place where almost all times and places are set. The characters wrapped up in this gripping novel live in a utopian-like society. Everything is planned. Certain rules must always be followed. Love does not exist to anyone but one solitary person, who still remembers. Every one has a role in the community. One person will be selected to receive the knowledge of the past. But what will the giver of the information do with it? I think that "The Giver" was an excellent novel. The plot was well-developed and flowed easily. However, the story did contain some suspense as to what would happen next. This made it very interesting to read. The characters in "The Giver" are characterized well and are easy for the reader to relate to, as well as the situations. However, the story is entirely fiction and completely imaginary...at least at this point in time. This gives the reader room for his or her own thoughts on every topic discussed. This is one novel that will keep a reader going, turning page after page, and not wanting to stop until they reach the back cover.
