Rating: Summary: As Good As It Gets Review: Lois Lowery has written some good books in the past. But nothing that that she has written is half as wonderful as The Giver. Jonas, the main character, lives in a world of no pain. When Jonas is assigned a job in the community, he is picked out to receive memories of the past. The memories are of joy, pain, evil and everything in between. There is definitely no turning back. I liked The Giver because it has many different characters and made me ask questions about the meaning of life. Jonas the main character lives in a life so different from ours. However he relates to our world. He almost makes us hate it. He has many experiences with the characters in the book, such as his parents, close friends, and the Giver. I think that The Giver is a unique book because it attempts to portray the meaning of life in a way that is keeps in the story. Some people might disagree with my ideas. Others may think that this book is confusing. It is a little confusing, because it shows you what is important and doesn't tell you that. For people, that to try to that try to rush through books as fast as possible to the Human brain, it may be confusing. Now when you read this book, which I highly suggest you do, you will realize immediately that it is definitely worth reading.
Rating: Summary: This book is awesome!!!!!!! Review: Lois Lowery is the true "Giver" in this book. She offers the reader a lot to think about, and digest. The time is the future. What seems like utopia, slowly turns into a furturistic nightmare. It makes the reader think long and hard about the world we live in now, and how some of the choices we've made could lead to disaster down the line. This book should be read by everyone from ages 12 years through adult. This should be an Oprah Book Club choice.
Rating: Summary: Odd, though enjoyable Review: Lois Lowery- I thought- had a very good writing ability and could make you see yourself like you where right in the character's shoes. Like many other books that she's written, the story tells itself well- but there's just a bit of a problem. The story itself (just in general) is really WEIRD! First of all the boy in the story where it takes place lives in this whole metropolis of people who are consistantly apologizing an speaking very good english, and are completly and totally brain-washed by the "rules." But also in an intresting sort of again weird way the whole entire story kind of wraps itself around the main focus of the story leaving you or the reader dazed and confused but yet at the same time, charmed and delighted.
Rating: Summary: The Giver Review: Lois Lowry came up with a great idea when she wrote "The Giver." The Giver is an excellent science fiction book that gives the reader a taste of what our world would be really if we all were the same. The book itself is told in past tense by a narrator, which is the point of view. The main character,Jonas,is trapped in a world which he does not know truly about until he is elected the new receiver of memories in his community. He learns the ways of the past from a man called "The Giver." He also learns how life and the world used to be. Jonas grows tired of these scary memories, however the Giver and Jonas decide to make a plan for Jonas to go to "the beyond." The plan succeeds and Jonas makes it. This book is very exciting and kept me reading. I have no complaints what so ever!
Rating: Summary: the giver is a mirror of our future Review: lois lowry creates a complete different world.in her novel the giver she shows a world in the future with no feelings and full of rules.a boy of the community gets to know the truth about his world, but defends himself against accepting it.in my opinion the giver could be a mirror of our future,if we don't pay attention.in our world there exist so many people, have no feelings and the goverment decides new laws/rules or changes them all the time. the giver stimulates us to think of our world. If we do things in the right way or not,if we have to pay attention or not to get a world which is like the one in lois lowry novel or not,... it wasn't easy for me to read the book, because of the many new words. but all in all i would that the giver by lois lowry is a very interesting book with many new views of a future world.
Rating: Summary: Very Juicy Novel Review: Lois Lowry creates a perfect world in her novel, The Giver. With suspense, foreshadowing, and many other well-used techniques, Lowry paints a story of a young boy, Jonas, who is given the burden of becoming the next Receiver for his community. The Receiver is the person who has to nurture all the memories of the world, from the past and present, yet not be able to share his discoveries with anyone else. Jonas eventually becomes overwhelmed by this task, and persuades the Giver, the previous Receiver, to change the world, as they know it. Lowry's illustration of this Utopia is wonderful. It forces the reader to think about the benefits and the problems of a perfect, uniform world. Lowry's precise writing leaves the reader pondering these questions: Is peace worth losing all color and beauty in a world? Is unity worth losing all personal identity? Are all utopias mind-numbing and monotonous? Personally, I truly enjoyed The Giver. It was an easy read, yet so full of questions and morals. I thought the end was very abrupt, but it only added to the effectiveness of the book. It made me think even more about the messages Lowry was cleverly trying to portray.

Rating: Summary: Interesting..... Review: Lois Lowry did a wonderful job of creating the perfect utopia in her book. I shudder to think of a place that is as blind as Jonas's(the main caracters)community. The book begins, explaining the plot, and most of the main caracters. Later on in the story a gifted man, who Jonas calls the Giver is introduced into the story. A interesting, yet wonderful book.
Rating: Summary: The Giver... right... Review: Lois Lowry did an excellent job writing the narration of the story. The perspective is very clear, and most of the ideas expressed are easy to understand by the masses. Of course, there are some things I couldn't stand. For example: 'Jonas almost gasped aloud. To have the power to turn the speaker off? It was an astonishing thing.' -End of Chapter 10 of 'The Giver' 'As O'Brien passed the telescreen a thought seemed to strike himm. He stopped, turned aside, and pressed a switch on the wall. There was a sharp snap. The voice had stopped.' -Excerpt from 1984 by George Orwell About less than a paragraph later, the protagonist in 1984 says the exact thing that Jonas said at the end of Chapter 10. Another thing that I couldn't stand was the sudden, almost magical transition of the characters' moral appearances seen by the protagonist. The Giver was an excellent read. If you like The Giver and wish to read more difficult selections, both Dune by Frank Herbert and 1984 by George Orwell are outstanding novels.
