Rating: Summary: Life In Her Eyes Review: When i discovered this book it felt like a breath of fresh air. Although the topic may not seem attractive; to a 15 year old girl it was everything i needed to get me through a life similar to Miranda's, now 17, i've read the book at least 3 times over. Her ability to reach above her own boundaries and fight back for what she believes in is truely impowering to young girls like me. The book has been passed around my friends for 4 years now, the cover is torn, the pages are worn, but the experience that the book gives you cannot be kept to oneself. Once you read it, you have to pass it on so that someone else can feel the book too.
Rating: Summary: Funny AND interesting! Review: Two words- GREAT BOOK! I enjoyed every minute of it! I felt like I knew each of the characters personally. There is a fantastic climax and a satisfying ending. Thoroughly enjoyable- highly recomended for other teens!
Rating: Summary: Good book for reluctant readers Review: After reading the first few pages of this novel, your experience with the book will "speak" for itself. This novel is written in a journal form and would be excellent for students who are reluctant to read. It would also be a great read for those students who seem to not always "fit in."Melinda, who used to be a totally different girl, now hardly speaks to anyone since a situation that occurred at a party over the summer. The book takes the reader through her first year in high school and the difficulties she encounters due to that one fretful night back in the summer. Without any friends, Melinda has a hard time finding herself and figuring out where she fits in. Throughout her freshmen year, Melinda begins to open herself up through an art project her art teacher, Mr. Freeman, assigns her. She begins to finally be honest with her feelings and finds the confidence to speak out about that summer night. This novel will make you laugh out loud but will also make you reflect on the bitterness that Melinda is experiencing. It is a book that emphasizes the importance of facing our fears and finding healing so we can move on in life. It will be a book that will leave you with something to "speak" about!
Rating: Summary: Dale Dodson Review: I highly recommend this novel. Speak addresses the issue of teen rape and what happens to the girl who is raped. The main character of the book is Melinda. Melinda was raped at a summer party by one of the popular upperclassmen how she calls "It" throughout the book. Melinda is shunned by all of her friend for calling the police to the party after she was raped. All of her friends do not understand what has happened. They just know she has called the police. As a result of the rape Melinda starts to remove herself from society both at home and at school. She starts refusing to speak to people. In the end she is able to come grip with her situation and tell people what has happened. She is also able to face and defeat "It". This is a great read and would be a terrific book for teenagers, both male and female. I must also add that I have used this book with some of my children and they have enjoyed it very much.
Rating: Summary: One of the Best New Books Review: If you are 13 or 331, you have to read this book. Eloquently written, it starts slow but moves quickly to an exciting climax. (If I told you what it was, It would give it away!) I've read this book twice. No, three times. Well, anyway, all I know is that I have stayed up until 12:00 last night to finish this book, I couldn't put it down!
Rating: Summary: Speak Review: About a girl that is new at a high school and she tries to fit in and she get really bad grade besides art and she enjoys art. I thought that this book was really good and I really liked it. I suggest it to everyone.
Rating: Summary: My English 9 book review Review: I think the book "Speak" by Laurie Halse Anderson is very well done. It is truley hilarious and unbelievably exact in the way that Melinda Sordion feels, thinks, acts, etc. I loved how I felt apart of the book and just so related to it. "Jessica has moved to Nevada. No real loss. She was mostly Ivy's friend anyways." p.4 I found it weird how some of the problems Melinda had with her friends were similar to mine. The summer I went to high school, one of my plain jane friends moved to Nevada. So I made a few connections. Another qoute I liked was "The first ten lies they tell you in high school- 1) We are here to help you 2) You will have enough time to get to your classes before the bell rings 3) The dress code will be enforced 4) No smoking will be allowed on school grounds 5) Our football team will win the championship this year 6) We expect more of you here 7) Guidance counselors are always avaliable to help you 9) Your locker combination is private 10) THese will be the years you look back on fondly p.5 I agree with Melinda on that one. One of her last hilarious remarks was when she was talking about her couch. p15 "The couch has two personalities: 'Melinda inhaling pepperoni and mushroom' and 'No one ever eats on this couch, no ma'am!' I chow and watch TV until I hear Dad's jeep in the driveway. Flip,flip,flip- cushions reversed to show their pretty white cheeks, then bolt upstairs." The theme of this book is freshmen year high school and how hard it is. I definitly agree. I would recommend this book to any freshmen girl so that they know their not the only one out there, there's people who feel just like you.
Rating: Summary: speak Review: I really like this book. It's sad and sarcastic and darkly funny. It's about this girl Melinda Sordino who busted an end-of-summer party by calling the cops and everyone hates her for it. She has no friends but one when she starts her freshman year of high school, this girl named Heather from Ohio who ditches her later on. She has this secret that she never told anyone about and it becomes harder and harder for her to speak. It's really sad and makes you think.
Rating: Summary: Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson Review: Speak is a very emotional book about a young girl named Melinda Sordino. She describes herself as an outcast and a loner. The reason she says this is because she when she went to a party, she had been raped and called the cops. Everyone was very mad because they thought that she only called the cops just to end the party that everyone were having fun at. No one had known that she had been raped by the most popular guy at her high school so they all blamed everything on her when they did not have the slightest idea about her being raped.Melinda has lost almost all her friends because they have either moved on to another group or because of this party incident. One of her friend whose name is Rachel is going to the dance with the guy that raped her whose name is Andy Evans. Since Melinda wants to protect her friend Rachel, she tells Rachel about the thing that happened between her and Andy. Rachel did not believe her and instead going to the dance with Andy anyways. The day after the prom Melinda finds out that Racherl had left Andy in the middle of the dance because Rachel thought about what Melinda said to her earlier when Andy was trying to kiss Rachel when they were slow dancing together. Once Andy saw Melinda, he cornered her and then started to rape her. She felt like it was all happening over again. After a little while she got a sharp piece of glass(since she was in art class) and told him to stay away from her. Melinda finally got help from a girl in the lacrosse team and the next day everyone found out about how Andy had raped her.... I have chose to read this book because my sister had told me how this book was a truly wonderful book. I gave it a try and I was so ahppy that i read it. I think that this book made me think about what life would be like in high school. It made me how realize how to cooperate with other people and deal with problems in your life. Overall this book was such a wonderful story and had the most touching theme. I have to give all this credit to the author Laurie Halse Anderson for being so creative, imaginative, and letting me enjoy this book.
Rating: Summary: Speak Review: Melinda isn't the most popular girl in school. Actually, she isn't popular at all. Melinda's high school year isn't starting out very well. The whole school for calling the cops on an end-of-the-year high school party hates her. But there a reason Melinda called the police. Melinda has a hard time trying to go through school with everyone hating her, and her parents not helping at all. She doesn't have one true friend and no real parents to talk to. "IT" keeps on haunting her though, the thing that made her call the police. Melinda has to tell someone before "IT" drives her crazy, she has to stop living this nightmare and speak out. Speak is a good book for teens because a lot of teens can relate to the book. It has everyday situations that happen at regular schools, in the book. Teens can relate easier and can really get to know the character.
