Rating: Summary: I love this series, but there is bad news... Review: I can't explain how much I love this series, and I am upset to say they are making a movie out of it. Sad, I know, that the millions of people who read the books, including yours truly, and since it has kid actors, it's going to be terrible. How do I know? Simple-- It's the same thing with Harry Potter- An excellent and achieving book series, and they ruined it by spoiling all of our imaginations on how we thought this book went. And in my opinion, I didin't like the movies because the dimwit kid actors ruined it with their horrible and cheesy acting. And I'm guessing it's going to be the same thing with this, since Klaus is about 12, and the kid who's going to play him is a terrible actor. (it figures, 'cause he's about 12 or something) The only adapted films that were good as it's original book is the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and Jurassic Park but I'm going to keep this review based on A Series of Unfortunate Events. So even this is some unfortunate news itself, the books are amazing. And if you love this series as much as I do, be like me- don't see the movies, 'cause it will spoil all of our imagainations. So buy these books, 'cause the books are so amazing and clever, and if you like they way you imagined it, don't see the movie, and stay with the books, because in most cases, the books are sooo much better than the movies. Buy this series, it's a great one.
Rating: Summary: Too Much Negativity Review: Although lots of people find these books wonderful, I don't. The story starts out sad, and the plot is sad, too much "bad guy" in it, and it ends sadly-"bad guy" gets away. I know that "Mr. Snicket" has a unique sense of humor, and I appreciate his writing style...I just don't care for it. I would not read these books if you are sad, because they will not cheer you up. They just made me mad. Lol.

Rating: Summary: The Best Review: These Books are great. Lemony Snicket puts so much effort into it. When you read these books it makes you just want to keep reading. If you pick the book up after dinner you'll find yourself reading the last page at midnight and your parents are in bed yelling at you to go to sleep. These books are just addictive and non predictive. Even though the story is sad, its filled with excitment. In the story there parents die so the three children go to live with a relative, Count Olaf, they have never heard of. But Count olaf just wants the childrens money. Throughout the storys Count Olaf just keeps poping up somewhere trying to get the money and kill the children. Some say it is to sad for 8 and 9 year olds but it isnt that sad. So really this book is a must read!!!!!!!!
Rating: Summary: May be too much for younger readers Review: I have been searching for a more challenging chapter book series for my 1st grader. I read part of the first chapter of this book at the bookstore and found the writing style very intriguing. So I bought it for my daughter, being that she needed something more than Junie B. Jones. The night she read the first couple of chapters, she ended up in tears because of the parents dying. She is incredibly sensitive and this was too real for her. She has continued on in the series without any further breakdowns but parents with sensitive children, be aware that there are events in the books that may be upsetting.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful! Review: This books are truly funny but may be a little hard on some children's sensitive souls. I suggest over- tens. When is Hollywood going to get its hans on this series? I can see all the characters in cartooon form already... And who on earth is the real author? Could it be Hillary?
Rating: Summary: I had trouble giving this one star Review: I read some of the reviews & thought I'd be getting a wonderful new series for the young ones in our family. Of course, I read Book 1 first. The writing style is fine for children. But, contrary to the people who are so happy to read junk like this to their young children, I disliked the book because of the subject matter. The parents die in a fire, the adults are all extremely stupid, the guardian forces the 14 year old girl into marriage to get her money by hanging the baby of the family in a tower. Get real. This is not a children's book by any stretch of the imagination. Books don't have to be namby-pamby for the kids; but, neither do they have to contain child abuse. Children have it hard enough without consciously adding to their de-sensitization.
Rating: Summary: Too negative? Only in the hands of the stupid. Review: I suppose negative reviews are inevitable in this age of hyper political correctness. Yes, the story is dark and negative. Yes, horrible things happen in the story. Yes, the story's characters lead horrible bleak lives surrounded by cruel people. However, even a child can clearly grasp that it's just that, a story. It's dreariness is the FUN of it! It is an excellent read for well adjusted 3-4th graders of reasonable intelligence who are capable of keeping it in perspective. A wonderful primer to the world of adult level fiction, full of age appropriate dark humor and dramatic "horrible happenings". Too negative? Maybe for the child who actually lives in an abusive household, where family members try to poison each other and drop the infants from windows... but that kid has issues beyond what book to read. All in all, it's an excellent way to teach a child that good fiction can also be dark and disturbing, but it's at a level that they can handle. It can definitely rekindle the interest of a child who is getting bored of the cute and happy children's literature. Plus, the author's style is intended to increase vocabulary, but it's only obvious to an adult.
Rating: Summary: The Good, the Bad, and the Goofy Review: Lemony Snicket is the author, Brett Helquist is the illustrator, and man, I have no idea what's the deal with these books but they all are MARVELOUS!The Bad Beginning is about the three rich Baudelaire orphans who have to go live with their distant relative, Count Olaf, who is the epitome of evil. He forms a plot to marry Violet, the eldest, to get their money, but the plan is discovered and Violet fixes it so that the marriage was false. Olaf runs away with his cronies, and Violet, Klaus (the middle child) and Sunny (the youngest, who's only a baby and can't talk yet) go and live with another relative. The Reptile Room: takes over where The Bad Beginning left off. The orphans are headed down Lousy Lane to go live with their scientist relative, Montgomery Montgomery. He has a large house with a huge museum of reptiles (hence, THE REPTILE ROOM). Montgomery is actually nice to the orphans, and he says that they're all going on an expedition to a foreign country to look for reptiles. All of them are really excited, until the new helper-man that Montgomery hired named Stefano is discovered to be the evil Count Olaf. Olaf kills Montgomery, and the kids try and get their guardian, Mr. Poe, to understand that Stefano is a murderer. Everything ends up not-so-great, and Stefano runs away again with his cronies while the children go to a new relative's. The Wide Window: takes place at Lake Lachrymose where the orphans have come to live with their widowed Aunt Josephine who's an incredible scaredy-cat. She's an fanatic about the English language, and she has to have perfect grammar. The orphans and Josephine meet a 'seafarer' named Captain Sham, who turns out to be Count Olaf (are we starting to see a pattern here?), and Aunt Josephine kind of develops a crush on him. The children try to warn her, but alas. Aunt Josephine runs away to a cave, and leaves the children a note with grammatical mistakes that tells where she is. The children go to find her, and she is a COMPLETE wimp and eventually ends up in the lake and eaten by leeches. The children escape from Count Olaf's clutches (he'd tried to adopt them after Aunt Josephine had supposedly deserted them). Mr. Poe was oblivious to this, even after the kids had warned him. But, eventually, Olaf gets away adn the kids go off to another relative. My opinion: One of the best things about these books are the pictures, because they're really funny and interesting to look at. Also, even though the plot stays mostly the same throughout every book, you never get tired of it, because everything is JUST SO FUNNY. If you were a kid fan of Harry Potter, I would definitely recommend this. Even if you were an adult fan, I think that you would get the hidden meanings and acronyms better than the kids do. All in all, this is a great series and definitely a must read!
Rating: Summary: A positively miserable series... Review: This is one of the best children's series out there. The best book in this batch is, "The Wide Window". They are fast reads and it is always interesting to see what situation the children are going to end up in each time. The box sets are the best to buy because once you read one book you'll want to read the next one to find out what happens. These books are a great investment.
