Rating: Summary: Civil War Novel a Gem Review: Virginia Morton's "Marching Through Culpeper" is a masterpiece of historical fiction. Basically a love story, she has skillfully woven her fictional characters with actual historical characters and events. The result is a well paced novel that is not only eminently readable but is also accurately reflective of the conditions known to have prevailed in many areas of Civil War Virginia. Modern readers, whose attitudes have mellowed at a distance of almost 140 years from the events portrayed, may be surprised at the passionate hatred of the Yankees held by the people living under the reality of those events, and may find it's portrayal a bit discomfiting. However, the several occupations by Union armies during the course of the war were hard on the civilian population. The people were not well treated. I grew up on stories of those times told to me by my grandmother and her sisters (for whom the Civil War was very real, their having been born in central Virginia within a decade after 1865); and I believe those passions are portrayed by Mrs. Morton with particular accuracy. In my judgment it is one of the strengths of the novel: it is true to life. It is one of the best novels I have read in a long, long time. I recommend this novel to anyone - both men and women - who may have an interest in the Civil War.
Rating: Summary: Virginia Has Hit A "Home Run" - J.E.B. Stuart IV Review: Virginia Morton's "MARCHING THROUGH CULPEPER" is a compelling novel that draws you from beginning to end into the web of human emotions experienced by those people who faced tragedy of warfare in its rawest form. War is an ugly business that cannot be described in a glamorous way: detached from reality. Amongst this chaos however, Mrs. Morton beautifully describes those moments of hope, love and the strong commitment to the principles that anchored the two opposing forces. "MARCHING THROUGH CULPEPER" should be read by all who wish to better understand this critical period in our nation's history. Using a baseball analogy, Virginia has hit a "home run" with this fascinating book ... J.E.B. Stuart IV, Colonel, U.S. Army Retired
Rating: Summary: Make TIME for Marching Through Culpeper!! Review: Warning ! Before you start to read "Marching Through Culpeper" be very sure you have 48 hours with nothing else to do! You will not be able to leave the story and characters of this wonderful novel based in Civil War Culpeper, Virginia! Virginia Morton has created a masterpiece of historical fiction. The story-line is well crafted, the fictional characters individually interesting and engaging, and best of all, the detailed history and real-life Civil War heros are portrayed to educate and entertain. Those of us who are not Civil War buffs, read history only occasionally and may be from "Union territory", definitely do not have an adequate understanding of the impact of the Civil War. I learned more from "Marching Through Culpeper" than from all the history classes taken in my earlier years! This book brings you right into the heart of the conflict - up close and very personal. I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone! It is a great novel for men, women and is quite suitable for teenagers. It will grab your heart, test your mind and will become a part of your life. You will remember this book and you will read it again! When is the MOVIE coming out??? I give it a FIVE-STAR rating!!
