Rating: Summary: A CHINESE MASTERPIECE Review: This book is a tragic story of a neglected daughter of asia who has suffered the pain of so many other unwanted children. The difference between her and other neglected children,is she has the quality to write about her unfortunate upbringing. This book is a wonderful follow-up to Falling Leaves which was her first book. This book is more intended for children and uses simple language. It tells a story of a tragic childhood which nearly wasted a wonderful gifted child. Luckily Adeline had the strength and courage to stand up and deliver two wonderful CHINESE MASTERPIECES. SHe gave hope to all those other neglected children out there.
Rating: Summary: The Unwanted Child Review: First of all, I had never read the book before and once I started reading it I could not put it down. When I first started reading the book I thought oh my gosh if I have to make sense of a bunch of Chinese characters I will be bored to death. Actually toward the end of the book when Ye Ye is trying to teach Wu Mei I began to understand how hard it would be to make sense of the Chinese language. Also, not to mentions there are so many dialects. I think the storyline of this book was great. Most of the characters in the book were will developed. I think the story established a true sense of the Chinese culture from binding their feet to the foods that they ate. Last of all, this book had a strong message for children that are unwanted to always keep their heads high and strive to succeed and beat the odds. There were probably many children like Wu Mei that were not truly wanted by their parents. However, I do not see how the father could just ignore all of Wu Mei's accomplishments especially at such a young age. Last of all, I seems as though young children in China have to be more responsible...Friendships allowed her to make it through the hard times. Even though she did not get to bring friends home to her house they were there to help her take her mind off what was going on at home. Also, you could discuss the loyalty that her friend had to her when they came to her house and when leaving after all they had her they still support her.
Rating: Summary: A very well written book Review: This is a very well written book about a young girl who is hated by her family and suffers terrible abuse at their hands. The fact that she survived to become a successful adult is a testament to the human spirit. I cannot say that I enjoyed the book. It was so sad. It made me feel both sad and angry on her behalf.
Rating: Summary: Chinese Cinderella Review: Chinese Cinderella was a great book about how an unwanted daughter keeps up her hopes and never givig up. I loved it. It brought tears to my eyes and will to your too.
Rating: Summary: Sad yet True Review: The story of this womans life is so sad. I cried. Listen to her words as an unwanted daughter. This is a touching book and it will bring tears to your eyes. As cruel as her family treated her. Her struggle to beat her stepmother. It is so sad.
Rating: Summary: Compelling and Heart breaking Review: When my mom got me this book after reading "falling leaves return to thier roots" (also by mah), I was less than thrilled. But after I started reading, I couldn't put it down. I had always tooken for granted having parents who loved me. Thanks to this book I don't, and I broke out crying during the middle of it. This is heart breaking and wonderful, a must read.
Rating: Summary: A Gripping Story That Moves You For The Rest Of Your Life Review: Chinese Cinderella is the autobiography of Adeline Yen Ma's childhood up to the age of fourteen. After her mother died in childbirth, young Adeline is hated because she is thought that her mother would not have died if it were not for her. Ma's story is a lot like the original Cinderella story- Adeline is ignored by her father, hated by her stepmother, and hated by her all of her siblings. Only her aunt and her grandfather are proud of Adeline, but it is determined that Adeline's aunt spoils her and she is sent to boarding school. Adeline is always a good student, and she wants attention, but it is obvious that her family does not love her. A emotional and powerful story.
Rating: Summary: Cogent, well written, timeless Review: This well-written book was very easy to read. I almost didn't buy it when another amazon reviewer commented that the writer was a whiner having come from a wealthy family. This book supports the old saying that money can't buy happiness. The story of the abuse that this unwanted child suffered was both compelling and universal in it's appeal to all the unwanted children and former unwanted children of the world. I am gratified to learn that the author went on to lead a very successful life as an adult. If my adopted daughters ever wonder if life could automatically be better with at least one biological parent, this is a book I will give them to open that discussion.
Rating: Summary: Chinese Cinderella Review: For my choice reading assingnment i chose to read Chinese Cinderella by Adeline Yen Mah. Like all great books there is a great ending. Fortunatly this book was a great book! Adeline Yen Mah was a girl born to a chinese family having high standards. With a troubled childhood she learned to live with her misfortune which all her siblings never forgave her for. Soon after she was born her mother died. Unlike my life, Adeline went through many a loss but as this quote descibes, "Falling leaves return to their roots," she hung on to what was important. Her struggles she was faced with in the beginning did not bring her down but made her stronger. After leaving Shanghi and setteling in Oxford, England she recives a letter from her Aunt Baba. Enclosed in the letter there was a story, which her Nai Nai had read to her many years before. The Chinese Cinderella, part of her familes fokelore. The story of the Chinese Chinderella was an open door. Adeline understood what it felt to be just like someone eles. reading this book gave me the idea of what growing up in Shanghi with a family having high standards. Also living in a Chinsee city during that time period. Learning the diffrences between families in china back then compared to American families now was very interesting. This book was realativly easy to read, The chinese words were a bit confusing but it was very easy to get into. I would deffintly recommend this book to anyone. The story was well thought out and demonstrated techniques that we have learned this year. If you read this book you will deffinatly enjoy it! I know i did.
Rating: Summary: A STEPMOTHER WORSE THAN CINDERELLA'S Review: This story points out that there are a few human beings that have a "built in" sense of accomplishment that is the most overpowering feeling of their being and nothing will get in the way. Here is a young girl where most of her family hate her (she has 2 allies that are eventually expunged)and above all, her stepmother is directly from hell. How she was able to overcome her family's hatefulness is beyond my understsanding, however, when she was at school her classmates and teachers did love her...even have a couple of events where "Cinderella's" family berated her classmates. This is a most interesting read and I shall, for sure, next read "Falling Leaves."
