Summary: Chinses Cinderella
Review: Chinese Cinderella

Chinese Cinderella is an autobiography by Adaline Yen Mah. The book is a true story of a Chinese girl who is neglected by her whole family. She is neglected because when her mother was giving birth to her she passed away. Everyone in her family thinks she is to blame for their mothers' death, but it wasn't her fault, her mother had complications. However, her whole family thinks she is a mistake. Her family believes she is bad luck. Then a horrible thing happens to her, the grandmother Nai Nai passed away. She was the only one who cared for Adeline. Now Adeline has no one to care for her, no one to look after for her and mostly, no one to love her.
When you thought things couldn't get any worse for Adaline, they did! Her father remarried and the new mother was named Niang. Niang was in control of everything now. She ran the house the way she wanted to. The stepchildren were always shafted and her children were always treated like they were perfect. Niang, the stepmother, hates Adeline and sends her off to boarding schools, never communicating with her. Not even her father writes to her because Niang blinds her new husband from the world. She makes everything he does needs to be about her and their children.
Since she was sent to the boarding school she has been depressed. Adeline feels like no one cares for her at her home, 'I want to forget everything that goes on here. I love my school. There I have friends! There I have fun!' Adeline is a smart girl; she earns prizes from school and is at the top of her class. She wins class awards about every week. However, these things aren't the things she really wants. What she really wants in the world is to understand her family and why they can't see that she is trying so hard to impress them.
The book is a very touching story and also very sad. It will help you understand how a broken child feels when no one cares. The book will open your eyes to a whole different world. It will open up a world that is full of desperation and neglect that some children live each day. This book brings forth reality. A lot of people think nothing of neglect and it is over looked most of the time. This book is a story that should be told everywhere for children who really don't have a childhood of laughter, and love.
When I read the book it opened my eyes and I now think about things differently. Personally I think the book was a great book. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to see the world in a different point of view. However the book is a little difficult because it is so deep, but anyone can get through it. I would say this book is an awesome book even though it is sad; if you think, 'I hate to read sad books,' I believe that you should read it. Just be prepared to never put your book down because I had a hard time putting the book down. I never wanted to stop reading until I got to the end!

Summary: A real Cinderella tale
Review: This is a really wonderful book,in a way,to those who don;t believe in fairy tales,especially Cinderella,here's a really great book-a real-life autobiography.

In the 1930s,a girl named Jun-ling was born into an affluent family with an elder sister and three elder brothers.Unfortunately, her mother died within two weeks after conceiving her,and she was soon considered to be a jinx. And that was when her life changes.

The poor rich girl was detested by her own sister and her brothers, and even her stepmother,a snobbish, intelligent and French-Chinese beauty. She lived in a lifestyle practically the same as Cinderella.Though she wasn't forced to do housework or anything, she has no freedom of her own,no new clothes(when the family was super wealthy). She moved from schools to schools, cities to cities, and witnessed the deaths of her beloved grandparents. What life is this for a child who was only aged 5-15 at the time?

Her sister picked on her,her brothers tricked her into drinking their urine(yep, they mixed their urine with fruit punch and told her it was a reward for her as headgirl),her closest friend,a little duckling was bitten to death by the family's dog,a German Shephard. The little girl longed to tell someone how life was for her;her friends thought she came from a loving family(when her stepmother cared for her own children than her-slapped the girl, hoped for her death and all really horrible stuff.Seriously,is this what you call a life meant for a human?

Adeline writes in a short and simple way.She tells her tale-not any fairy tale, though she did find happiness in the end.She won numerous awards as a student, has a passion for education. But nobody has ever cared for her. Each time she received an award, nobody was there with her.Her presence was almost inexistence at home. Her father hardly cared for his daughter,he did not even know his daughter's name and date of birth. Can one believe this? Reality was tough, reality was harsh, but the girl accepted it-without a word of complain. She did not give up,and promised to do well at school to live a life better than that of her family's.She became well-known for her flair of writng, went to London to study medicine, and became a doctor soon afterwards. This is a heartwarming tale of a girl.A true Cinderella. With a real stepmother. With stepsiblings(her own siblings detested her, what more stepsiblings?).And fairy-godmothers/father(her aunt Baba, grandad, friends). An amazing and truly profilic book to read.

Summary: A biography that everyone should read- Chinese Cinderela
Review: Chinese Cinderella is a book that everyone should read because it's very touching and once you start reading, it grabs your full attention and you'll just go on and on reading and don't want to stop. While reading this novel, it makes you feel like you are right there at the setting, you're part of the story and you can see what is going on, the whole story just grabs you into the story. Chinese Cinderella is a biography that will make you cry, it is so good that I recommend it to you all.
Chinese Cinderella is a non-fiction, true story of an unwanted daughter by Adeline Yen Mah, a biography of Adeline Yen Mah. It's about her life as a child to an adult and all the heart-breaking and awful things she has been through.
Adeline Yen Mah's mother died after giving birth to her and so Adeline's family then considered her as bad luck. After the death of Adeline's mother, Adeline's father then got remarried and life got worse for Adeline. Adeline has six siblings, a big sister and three younger brothers whom Adeline's mother gave birth to and after Adeline's father got remarried, her stepmother gave birth to one boy and one girl. Adeline's stepmother treated Adeline and her true siblings really cruelly where as Adeline's half brother and half sister which the stepmother gave birth to, were thoroughly spoiled.
In this biography, Adeline has a pet duck, which is the only thing that Adeline really cares about in the whole entire world. However, he beloved duckling gets killed just because her father wanted to test the obedience of the dog.
Adeline is a smart girl, she earns prizes from school and tops a her classmates and wins class awards. However these things aren't what she really wants, what she really wants is the understanding of her family.
Once again I recommend this biography to you, it is the best biography that I've read so far. Also, when you start reading this biography, remember to have a handkerchief or a box of tissue with you, because it is very touching and sad that it makes you cry.

Summary: A heart-wrenching page turner
Review: "Chinese Cinderella," written as an autobiography by Adaline Yen Mah, is the heart-wrenching story of a Chinese girl abandoned emotionally by her family because her mother died during her birth, thus labeling her as bad luck. Only her Aunt Baba, Nai Nai, and Ye Ye (grandparents) care for her. Nai Nai suddenly dies, and her stepmother Niang takes over as head woman of the house. She has so much influence on her husband (Adeline's father) that everything he does revolves around her. Niang has a hate for Adeline and sends her off to many boarding schools, never communicating with her. Although Adeline is always depressed and feeling worthless, she is always at the top of her class and tries hard at school. She writes in a writing contest and dedicates her work to her Ye Ye because he encouraged her so much, but her Ye Ye dies. She ends up winning the contest, and her father is so proud of her that he sends her to college.

This book is well written and intriguing. It shows a good portrait of china during the twentieth century. If you like Asian American literature, you will definitely like this book!

Summary: Stark reality has never been starker
Review: I had a great deal of difficulty getting through this book. On the one hand, it was magnificently depressing. In many ways, so singularly depressing that it got to the point where I could predict exactly what was going to happen based on the first few sentences of the chapter. The fact that the protagonist receives (I could hardly believe it) a cute little yellow duckling almost crossed the book over into absolute ridiculousness. On the other hand, Mah assures us that this all happened. This is no "Child Called It" with its unreliable narrator AND author. This book is, for all intents and purposes (or so we can only believe) the truth. And as such, it stands as a great inspiration to all children who have horrible home lives and can only escape such lives through literature such as this. So I respect the book, even as I have my qualms. For example, the book ends with the author receiving her father's blessing to go to college. Such an ending feels abrupt, and I can only assume that Yah's previous book, "Falling Leaves", must pick up at that point. Yah is an excellent writer, and here is the proof. Though I had to physically force myself to continue reading this depressing story, at its finish I couldn't help but wonder if my library had "Falling Leaves" and, if so, if I could flip through it. This book would be an excellent recommendation for those young adults obsessed with the aforementioned "Child Called It" (and, depressingly, there are quite a number of them). It would not, I think, read well to kids. This book contains acts of violence and cruelty. I would pair it with those other true to life, or at least realistic, books that children at a certain age become fascinated with.

Summary: Tragic and true, but...
Review: After reading both this book and her first book "Falling Leaves," I agree with the other reviewers that "Chinese Cinderella" is a heart-wrenching page-turner. But...Chinese Cinderella? Those are big shoes to fill. If I remember correctly, the whole story about Cinderella is rags to riches, but once she marries Prince Charming, she doesn't take vengeance on her stepmother and stepsisters--in fact, Cinderella forgives them wholeheartedly and instead of harboring a "woe is me" complex, she simply cherished her fairytale ending.

The book has that cleverly-disguised revenge feeling to it. My God, yes, as I read, I felt her stepmother was horrible, but there is no way she could have been a pure villain. In real life, people just aren't like that, neither pure good nor pure evil. The author kind of sets herself up as this innocent little girl, completely victimized by everyone in the world, so sweet and darling she is, and let us all hate on her terrible, terrible stepmother.

Something's missing from both books...I can't exactly pinpoint it, but I feel like there is more to tell, and that's from the point of view of the stepmother and other stepchildren.

But in terms of the technical, the book is fairly well written. That's why I give it 4 stars.

Summary: Chinese Cinderella~An Excellent Book
Review: *Summary*
Chinese Cinderella is the autobiography about Adeline Yen Mah's teen years. Adeline is a young girl born into a horrific life in China. Her life is so similar to the life of "Cinderella's" that it is almost unreal. Adeline's mother died giving birth to her, so her family believed her to be bad luck. She was discriminated against throughout her life and everyone that ever loved her was always taken away. Adeline was always that the top of her class in school and would always come home with awards and certificates, even though she knew that no one would care. Her father would never recognize her because he was always to busy thinking and playing with her two younger half siblings and Niang (her stepmother).
Adeline only had two people in her life that she could depend on, her Grandma YeYe and her Aunt Baba. As she grew up times in her life changed and she was verbally abused more and more often. Her Grandmother YeYe died and she was shipped off to boarding school while the rest of her family moved to another town, where they had a big house with lots of room for children to play. The boarding school closed up and she was sent home to live with her family and soon discovered that her Aunt Baba wasn't allowed to move with the rest of the family. She was mistreated for her whole life. Can she live the rest of her life without Aunt Baba? Can she survive the verbal abuse?

*Recommendation*
I recommend this book to teens who can handle a book strongly and aren't afraid to cry in a book. While reading this book you must have a strong stomach, due to the sick and cruel things that Adeline's siblings and parents do to her. This book was mainly written for older teens, which are between the ages of 13-15.

*Review*
This book made me cry and feel Adeline's pain because the descriptions are so explicate. It is amazing that one lone girl had to go through the pain and torture that Adeline describes. Chinese Cinderella was such an incredible read that I just couldn't put the book down. Though at times the story was so depressing that it seemed untrue. It was extremely hard to believe that such horrible things could happen to a person. Adeline Yen Mah deserves all my gratitude...this book was excellent.

Summary: Motherless Child
Review: When I read the cover back book, I thought this story is quite interesting me because It's about the true story of an unwanted child. Also I am a Thai Chinese, so I knew that many Chinese people still believe in the luck. Even though I've never been treated like this before, I can understand it very well on how Chinese people believe. But I feel sad for Adeline that she has to grow up with out her mother love and worm which is a very bad feeling enough for one person. Moreover, she had to suffer with the stepmother bad willing, that is the double suffering for her life, I think she would never be a good person like this if she doesn't have those people-Aunt Ba Ba and Ye Ye, around her to give her the good willing. One point I really like about her is how she pretend or act like she has a good warm family. The way she did in her school that she didn't blame at them or reveal the truth to her friend about how bad family she had, so they would feel sorry for her. Another point that I think it is true is that it's hard to find some stepmother to love a child from old wife of her husband. And the last point that I like is that she gave us some knowledge about Chinese history, even though it hard for me to remember. But one thing I don't like about it is that it is unfair to blame her bad luck child. And about her father, I don't like him at all that he didn't care about anything else without his business even it is true that most of Chinese fathers who have to work for family mostly do not care much about family because they think that it's a wife's duty.

Well...I like it though.
