Rating: Summary: Very touching book. Review: this book was a very moving book. i learned a lot about this terrible tragedy and what it was like being a part of it. it must have been horrible for this girl to have to go through this. this was not meant to be a novel, as i learned while reading, it was a girl's diary and she did a fascinating job of writing it.
Rating: Summary: Diary of a Girls Life Review: I find it sad that some reviewers found this boring; it was the private thoughts of a young girl who was able to express herself much more thoughtfully and articulately than most modern-day thirteen year olds. It is touching, or should be, because Anne describes her dreams and hopes and we know that she never lived to realize them. That is what makes this diary so touching and important. Perhaps some of you can re-read it when you have gained some maturity and sensitivity and then you will appreciate it more.
Rating: Summary: A great favorite of mine Review: I first read this book on my own when I was about thirteen or fourteen. I cannot count the number of times I have read it since. This is a diary, with all the day-to-day chronicling and personal speculation that all diaries have, but the details of this life are fascinating... the speculation is ever timely and thought-provoking. This book should be read by everyone, preferably by every teenager. It is an important historical document, but, first and foremost, it is the story of a child's journey through adolescence that is tragically cut short.I appreciated the Definitive Edition for replacing entries that Anne's father originally edited out. But the Definitive Edition did have problems. I was confused by the different dating of entries from the original. And in the original edition that I read, there was extensive footnoting that explained references by Anne that might have been lost on the reader. In the Definitive Edition, there is no explanation as to why Peter Van Daan referred to Anne as his El Dorado and why Anne referred to herself as the Benjamin of her family. There is minimal footnoting that clarifies Anne's family, but none that clarifies Anne's literary allusions or the historical background to which she refers. Since I am rating the diary, I give it five stars. If I were rating this edition of the diary, I would only give it four.
Rating: Summary: I threw it in the trash can! Review: I was forced to read this book twice, and the second time was even worse than the first. I understand that the Holocaust was a terrible event in history, but why does the school system make us read this terribly boring book? It is the worst book I have ever read. I don't mean to be disrespectful, but Anne Frank is more boring than the Home and Garden channel. She writes well, but why in the world should students have to read about her life as a young girl who does only one thing, complains. She goes on and on and on about NOTHING. It is like reading a broken record. I can't believe that anyone could enjoy this book. I would rather watch professional bowling than read this book again. The day our english class had it's final on the book I threw it in the trash. I have sworn never to read this book again. I can only recommend this book to people who enjoy reading the same thing over and over and over or are really bored. I wish I had the option of giving this book 0 stars because I would have done it in a heart beat.
Rating: Summary: An extrodianary story from such a terrifing war. Review: I thought that this story was a delightful yet tragic time period. I felt as if Anne was talking to the reader and not the diary called kitty. Anne Frank was a brave young women to have not been emotionaly depressed through the whole ordeal. It would be hard to have to stay in hiding today. Especially a young aldult or teenager with alot of energy. This book was pleasent to read. I only would want to read, "The Last seven Months," to find out how she lived and died in the concentration camps.
Rating: Summary: Greatly moving and inspiational. Review: The Diary of Anne Frank is an incredible book that will leave the reader examining their own soul, ready to look beyond hate themselves, and with a sense of great loss that Anne was killed at such a young age. Anne speaks truthfully and with astounding insight, inspiring you to find beauty in the world and within yourself. Many people have said, "It is terrible that Anne died so young because she could have really given something to the world." I believe that she has--Anne gave the world hope, inspiration, and strength through her diary. Almost anyone who reads it will finish this book as a better person.
Rating: Summary: A Great Book! Review: In my opinion, it was a great book. It explained everything that she went through plus more. Alot of the reviews here said that it was boring and had nothing to do with the Holocaust. The book is not supposed to focus on the Holocaust. It is a 12 year old girls diary. It's about HER and what SHE felt through out the time she was in hiding. I find this very inspiring and hope everyone gets a chance to read it.
Rating: Summary: This book really gave me insight to what it's like. . . Review: Anne Frank was a girl like myself when she underwent the torment of World War 2. She loved her movie Stars, she was a chatterbox and had many admirers. It explained what girls of her age thought at the time of the war and other matters. It was sad but she was so inspiring to me. . .she was so optimistic and found her faults and improved! The reason for me giving this 4 stars is because many parts in the book had nothing to do with the war or hiding and some parts were grotesque. (I also got the inmpression that she was a lesbian.) I would recommend this book especially to girls between the ages of 11 - up (and adults) To really get what's going on you must read the WHOLE book from cover to cover. Read it! It ROCKS!
Rating: Summary: An Amazing Story - Poignant Yet Hopeful Review: Reading through the reviews of Anne Frank's Diary, I saw several complaints about its 'dullness' or 'repetitiveness'. I think that people often forget, to some extant, that Anne's diary was not meant to be a piece of literature. It was meant to be her diary, and nothing more. However, it is an amazing piece of writing. Anne was obviously a talented writer. Her diary is a beautiful story, one that mingles hope and despair. Although her diary ends abruptly, when she is taken by the Nazis, it still provides an amazing picture of Jews in hiding during WW2. Anne's diary is not one narrow escape and adventure after another. It wasn't meant to be. It was "The unbosomings of a school-girl". However, it gives an amazingly clear picture of her life and times. I believe that this book is a classic . . . Read it!
Rating: Summary: A really sad book. Review: When my teacher read this book out loud to me in 3rd grade, I couldn't fully grasp the meaning and power of this wonderful book. But when I read it again in 8th grade, I became so engrossed in it I finished it in a day. This is truly the most authentic book about the Holocaust that could ever be written. An eye-witness account. Anne's courage and bravery could clearly be highlited in this book. The ending is so sad. A life comes and a life ends. The Holocaust is truly the cruelest time in world history.
