Rating: Summary: YES! Patrick Stewart was BORN to do this show! Review: I purchased this CD quite some time ago from a magazine, and it quickly became my favorite holiday recording. I would keep the CD in the car & listen to it for MONTHS after the holidays, over and over again. Mr. Stewart plays all the parts, and his performance is nothing short of incredible. If you have any sense of imagination, you can close your eyes and picture what he describes, and feel the emotions of his characters. When Scrooge laments his wicked ways of the past near the end of the performance, it nearly brings me to tears.I moved last year & lost my set (there are 2 CDs). I started looking for it here at Amazon and was disappointed when I couldn't find it (I was looking in the wrong section). I came across it today & snapped it right up. If you like Patrick Stewart, like Dickens, are into Christmas, or have an appreciation for the fine art of a classically-trained actor, you've got to get this! Question to Her Majesty of England: Why hasn't this man been knighted yet?!
Rating: Summary: Absolutely amazing... Review: I saw Patrick Stewart's One man performance of a Christmas Carol last year in NYC. One man on an almost bare stage, with a desk, a chair, a table, and a coat rack. The theatre was filled to capacity with both adults and children. As we sat down prior to the performance, the whine-y children sitting in front of us were already complaining about the seats, the temperature of the theatre and the color of the curtains! I was prepared for the experience from Hell, and more than a bit annoyed that my wonderful experience was going to be ruined by these "monsters". It was indeed a shock when Mr. Stewart's performance enthralled everyone in the audience. No one in the audience said another word for the entire performance. It was absolutely mesmerizing. I have never seen a performance like it before or since. I anticipate that the tapes will bring back the most wonderful theatre experience of my life. I can't wait.
Rating: Summary: Dickens would be pleased! Review: I was not fortunate enough to have seen the live stage production of this (stupid me), so I had to do the next best thing and buy the audio cd version. Patrick Stewart is probably one of the most "under-rated" actors of our time. He vividly brings the scenes of the story right in front of you, as you listen to him do ALL the characters (including the female leads). At times, you forget that this is ONE person doing all this! He is equally great in the 1999 made-for-television adaption, but if you like intense-dramatic "storytelling" (the way Dickens wrote it), you will love this.
Rating: Summary: The best story for those into the Christmas spirit!! Review: In just one sentence, the best book that Dickens has writen!! Every year I read this classic because the more you read it, the better it gets!!
Rating: Summary: Praise for Stewart, ambivalence for the format Review: It's difficult not to enjoy Patrick Stewart's performance in any role, and this is no exception. I was irritated to discover that the two discs each hold only a single track, though. In other words, the performance is divided into two discs, each with forty- to forty-five minutes of continuous play. This is fine with the proper time set aside to listen, but it makes the package a nightmare for shorter road trips and the like. Even one additional track on each disc would make the navigation easier, but as it is the only option upon having to stop is to then scan ahead--sometimes for several minutes--to begin again where the performance was ended. Doubtless the actual stage performance is (or was) continuous and without more than a single opportunity for a break, but that kind of commitment is understood when the tickets are purchased; I don't expect to have to make that commitment each time I want to listen to a CD recording. Stewart receives five stars for his efforts, but the best I can give the recording is four. If not for the relatively shorter lifespan, I'd rather have the performance on cassette.
Rating: Summary: Well worth the money! Review: Mr Stewart does an admirable job in this dramatic reading of a Chritmas Carol. Listening to this CD is a great way to get in the holiday spirit!
Rating: Summary: An excellent holiday tradition! Review: My wife and I have listened to the audio cassette of this many times over the last few years. Now we're buying the CD version. It's funny, scary, and every bit as real as the Dickens book itself.
Rating: Summary: A fantastic performance of a fantastic story! Review: Patrick Stewart gives an amazing performance of this story. Although he is reading Dickens' book word for word, he does each character with a different voice and you are totally absorbed listening to it. Try listining to these CD's with the lights turned off, the Christmas tree lights turned on and a fire in the fireplace. It's a yearly tradition around our house. Highly recommended!
Rating: Summary: Stewart recording a gem Review: Patrick Stewart has done his research, This recording captures all the strength and emotion of his stage performance. If it were not for Stewarts fantastic rich voice one would beleive they were listening to Dicken's himself doing a reading of his book in the streets of old england. A must have for every 'A Christmas Carol' lover.
Rating: Summary: A holiday classic that never grows old Review: Patrick Stewart is nothing short of phenomenal in this one-man performance of Charles Dickens' classic. Stewart's considerable acting experience (with the RSC no less) shines through quite brightly here. He does EVERY voice you hear...men, women, and children! Stewart even sings in the various voices. It is quite astonishing! I can't wait until Christmas rolls around again every year, just so I can listen to this audiobook again and again. It never grows old. My favorite thing to do is to listen to it as I fall asleep under layers of blankets on a cold night. My favorite scenes have to be dinner with the Cratchit's and Old Joe's. If only they could have done the book in its entirety. Regardless, this is definitely a classic that you will treasure for years and generations to come.
