Rating: Summary: Love the recording ... why no breaks? Review: .... This is THE recording to own.My only concern is .... WHY ONE TRACK? The CD could easily have been broken down into intro, Ghost of Christmas Past, Ghost of Christmas Present, Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come, and then the redemption. Would have made it SOOOO much easier to come back to when I stop it.
Rating: Summary: A wonderful rendition of an enduring classic. Review: An audio record of Patrick Stewart's one-man rendition of Charles Dicken's Timeless Classic. Stewart has adapted the text for his show and performs all the characters and necessary sound effects. It is wonderful example of the power of a good actor. The enduring story of "A Christmas Carol" involves Ebenezer Scrooge, a greedy grasping businessman, who is untouched by human emotion. Or so we think until he is visited one Christmas Eve by four sprits who show him the error of his ways. In the end a redeemed Scrooge resolves to keep the Christmas spirit all the days of his life and to be good to his fellow men. Stewart is able without the aid of costumes, scenery, special effects, or other actors, to bring this timeless tale to life. His vivid characterization of each person is all the more remarkable for the fact that the only tools he has are his voice and the listener's imagination. I enjoy his rendition more and more each passing year.
Rating: Summary: It's so good that it gives me gooseflesh... Review: As a huge fan of Patrick Stewart in his various movies, I was curious of this audio-performance. And I wasn't disappointed. His rich voice and his stage-trained intonation give his performance such a superb quality that I can actually SEE the small fire, SMELL the food in the kitchen and SHIVER in the cold, while the ghost takes Scrooge to the various stations of his life. All is so very authentic that it gives me shivers and gooseflesh is crawling up my arms while listening...Get your copy if you like Dickens. To me it is the best performance ever.
Rating: Summary: A must-have for fans of Patrick Stewart Review: As this review is specifically about Patrick Stewart's performance of A Christmas Carol, not the work per se, I will limit my comments to the former. It is a special pleasure and delight to hear a capable, classically trained actor perform Dickens' classical piece as a one-man show. Stewart's rendition of the characters is uniquely enjoyable, and adds considerable dimension to Dickens' work. A true piece of art, and well worth buying.
Rating: Summary: A Christmas Carol Through My Eyes Review: Being a person who enjoys books, I was excited to read this Christmas classic. I was a little disapointed to find that the vocabulary of the book was a bit above my level. The only reason I was able to follow along with what was happening was because I had seen the movie so many times and I knew the concept of the story. I think that the book definitely does a good job of showing how someones life would be with out love and care in their heart. There are so many Ebeneezer Scrooges in this world and they don't realize how much their cold heartedness and hatred impacts other people. I would deffinitely recomend this book for people that are on a high school level and above.
Rating: Summary: As Mr. Dickens once did Review: Firstly I have a bit of a retraction to make. I have often said that books that have been recorded, and even worse abridged, are not worth the time of the listener, and not what the writer originally intended. In this case the opposite is true. Mr. Dickens often performed portions of his work, and if you can spot the abridgments in this performance, you are very cognizent of every line of the piece. Mr. Stewart is well known for his television role of Captain Picard. He is also an award winning thespian, and a long-term veteran of London's Royal Shakespeare Company. He has performed "A Christmas Carol" on stage in London, and New York City, and the elements shared were the highest recognition of his peers, and sold out shows. I had the privilege to see Mr. Stewart perform his Olivier Award Winning one-man show, and it was extraordinary. The Disc will bring you his voice, and while it cannot match the presence of this Actor, the listener is missing less than you might expect. The disc cannot replace the live performance. Mr. Stewart's performance is done on stage with so little in addition to his voice, short of being there this is tremendous. When on stage there are no sets, just 4 pieces of wooden furniture that he moves about, as he needs. There are no costumes, as he appeared is contemporary dress. The lighting is minimal, so when you can only listen you still have the heart of the performance. There is no extravaganza on stage, no over produced ready-made soundtrack. There is one extremely talented man, relaying one of the greatest writer's works to you. There are dozens of roles to play, he plays them all, and when a conversation takes place between multiple characters, you will think you hear multiple actors. This is an accomplished classically trained actor delivering an extraordinary performance. I took my Father to the show, prior to which he had no idea who Patrick Stewart was. When it was over he said that in 60 years of attending Broadway Theatre, he had seen nothing better. Enjoy!
Rating: Summary: Charles Dickens'; A Xmas Carol, Review: I first heard this on the radio while driving back from Jacksonville, FL during xmas of 1996. Is was great, the best; Patrick Stewart's voice really captured it all. If radio was like this in the 40's how did TV replace it? I bought it so my young children could listen to it during our "NO TV" night.
Rating: Summary: NOT AS GOOD AS THE CLASSIC I HAVE Review: I HAVE A CHRISTMAS CAROL BY CHARLES DICKENS, ILLUSTRATED BY FREDERICK SIMPSON COBURN, COPY RIGHT YEAR 1900. IT IS AN OLD BOOK, AND I AM TRYING TO FIND OUT IF IT IS AN ORIGINAL. THE KNICKERBOCKER PRESS, NEW YOUR. ANY THOUGHTS?
Rating: Summary: Just the best Review: I have read the book. I have seen every movie that has even slightly been about A Christmas Carol or Scrooge. I go every year into the NY City to see the show (and I did see Mr. Stewart in his one man show). I love this story and always have. My poor family is bombarded at the holidays with my ever wanting to watch one version of the movie or another. And then... I received this CD set for Christmas a few years ago. Oh man. What a beautiful thing. Having seen the show Mr. Stewart did, I can listen to these cd's and see him in my minds eye. Even if I hadn't seen his show, Patrick Stewart was MENT to be Scrooge and this telling of the story proves that. You will NOT be disapointed with this version, even though it is abridged. Very few can pick out the missing parts. The only thing that I dislike about the CD's themselves is the fact that they do not break the track down. It is one long track. I hope you buy this set, and enjoy it. We have made it a tradition to listen to it Christmas Eve. A few friends and family, some good food and wine (and hot chocolate) and this CD... you are all set!!
