The plot line is no only cliche, but a badly executed mass of sappy goo that becomes nausinating. If you read the back cover, don't read the book becuase you can pretty much figure out the plot from there. Poor little girl bounds through the hilltops of some enchanted mess and the reader never feels she's in danger, because, well, shes the MAIN character. Even when confronted with a dragon, the reader wishes she would be quiet and not whine so much. The numerous subplots, including the girl's father are never fully developed and thus the arcs begun by the author are never completed. We are introduced to problems, but since they are explained in one liners, the reader can't fully grasp why such seemingly inconsequential events are so freaking important to this girl. She's quite selfish, believes the world revolves are her, and her lack of empathy for her father makes the reader understand why the guy wanted to get away from her. Heck, i wanted to slap her.

Review: I first picked this book up through a book club (remember those?) in school when I was in third grade when it was new, fresh off the shelves. I always loved fantasy stories and unicorns have always captivated me. As soon as I got it home, I devoured it and since then, have read it countless times. Bruce Coville is an excellant author. I waited for a sequel for years, maybe up until seventh grade, then I gave up hoping, but secretly always counted the minutes until I could find out what happened to Lightfoot, Cara, Squijum, Dimblethum, etc. As I was searching the web for Harry potter info, I came across the sequel, and went insane...i was laughing and screaming. I begged my mom to order it ASAP off amazon. But enough about the sequel, when I read it, I will review that. I was held hostage by the world of Luster, and I was right there with Cara when she jumped off the clock tower. I wished that if I closed my eyes, I could wake up and be Cara, adventuring with her friends in a magical world. I have only one complaint to Bruce Coville. If you take another 6-7 years to write the third one, i dont know what I'll do. (By the way, I loved this book at 8, and will treasure it far beyond my fourteen and a half years.)
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: This is amazing! Review: I've read this book at LEAST a billion times. This is one of the books that got me started on my never-ending fantasy kick. I love equines, including unicorns and pegusi. I may sound immature, but I'm 12. Forgive me. This work of art is about a young girl named Cara and her journeys in a world connected to ours. This place is where all the 'fantasy creatures' live in almost-peace. To tell you much more would actually ruin the book for you, since you'll find all this out eventually if you read this book. Along with the Harry Potter series, the Animorphs series, Everworld, The Dragonriders of Pern ... this is one of the great series (yes, there's a sequel! Lucky us! It's called "The Song of the Wanderer") that children and even many adults will enjoy!

The only new book I had was this one, so even though I didn't think I would like it, it was better than lying there awake. When Cara began to be followed, I was very scared and very hooked. Finally, a couple of hour later, my mom came to check on me and made me go to bed, or I would have probaby stayed up all night. Needless to say, I couldn't put it down and I would recommend it to those who like adventure, mystery, sorrow and magic. Age eight to eighty-eight.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: A truly enchanting book! Review: This book is awesome! It is a combination of fiction, mystery, and adventure, and the best part is that there's absolutely NO romance(my kind of book!). Cara, the main character, is an orphan who lives with her grandmother Morris. Abandoned by her parents at an early age, her world is shaken up once again when a mysterious stalker starts hounding her small family-and that's only the first chapter! Her grandmother gives her a special amulet, and sends her to Luster, which turns out to be the land of the unicorns. Within the boundaries of Luster, Cara finds adventure at every turn, and befriends very unique characters, including Lightfoot, a rebellious teenage unicorn. With the help of her new friends, Cara must help to save her grandmother, and the whole unicorn population before it's too late. While doing so, she must discover whether blood is really thicker than water, and the outcome could be potentially dangerous.

When I first picked it up at the library, I was in like third grade (I think) and didn't care much for it then (when I think back, I can't believe that I didn't want to read it). But then it like haunted me or something so I went back and picked it up. I loved it! Ever since then, I've always considered it one of my many favorite books. In Into the Land of the Unicorns, Bruce Coville launches you right into how Cara and her grandmother are being followed the second you read the first sentence. While they try to lose the follower, Cara is told by Gramma to take her amulet and jump off the roof of a church. Half-believing that her grandma is crazy, she does and lands into Luster, a place for unicorns and other magical creatures to live peacefully. Cara teams up with Lightfoot, a unicorn, and other creatures to to complete her grandmother's request to find the "Old One." If you like adventure and fantasy, this is the book for you! If not, still read it! It really is great.
