Rating: Summary: Words fail Review: Homecoming is the start of a series that chronicles the world of a girl named Dicey. It's a story that you sink into and can't escape. By the time it's over, you may need a day or two to emotionally recover yourself. Dicey joins the ranks of the great literary originals - the first believable character of her kind. In creating her, Voight joined Barrie, Doyle, Cooper and a precious few others who've made such original personalities. Some readers may have some difficulty with it, as Voight tends to narrow in on small details. That only makes the story longer, but it also makes for a more breathable world. It's one of the greatest stories I've ever read.
Rating: Summary: Great book for all ages Review: I have to say I wasn't really thrilled when I learned that I had to read this book, but when I began it -- BOOM! -- I'm gone! The Tillerman children are abandoned by both parents, and the only place they can go without getting split up is to go to their Great Aunt Cilla's house. 13 year-old Dicey, being the oldest of the four, has to lead them there. So with only about $4, she takes them through the east coast of the US, trying to not get caught and survive. This book is not for everyone, but if you like realistic fiction or books about survival, then read this. Most of my friends won't even try to read it due to its length [I have to admit, if you don't read a lot, you'll think this book will never end]. I beg you to at least TRY it. Go to the library, pick it out, and flip through it. Give it 5 minutes! That's all I ask!
Rating: Summary: Absorbing Read Review: I listened to this on tape in the car when I went on a family vacation when I was 12; I can tell you, I didn't want to leave the car! It's a really absorbing story of survival for four young children, and I felt I could relate to Dicey, who, even though she is only 13, is basically the caregiver and protector of her three younger siblings. If you read just 5 minutes, you won't be able to put it down!
Rating: Summary: Great book for all ages Review: My nine year old daughter came home and told us all about the first book in this series--Homecoming. Her teacher had read it aloud to the class, and my daughter was really excited about the story. My daughter then bought the book and was very insistent that I read it. Wanting to encourage her excitement over a book, I jumped right in an began to read. I was hooked pretty quickly. Even as a 51 yr old mom I could relate to the kids in the story and wanted to go on and find out how things turned out for them in the end. Since then we have read Dicey's Song and I am now at work on A Solitary Blue. The books are geared toward a teen aged reader, but I think younger children would enjoy having it read to them. There's a wealth of topics that the book brings up that make for great discussions between parents and children.
