Description:

Most of the college guides on the market limit you to descriptions of a few hundred schools, the majority of which are traditional universities. The Kaplan Newsweek College Catalog 1999, however, features comprehensive data on more than 1000 schools in all 50 states (and 9 in the District of Columbia). The guide covers quite a mixture of schools, ranging from the massive University of Texas, Austin, to tiny Deep Springs College and from engineering schools such as Georgia Tech to performing arts schools such as Juilliard. Each school is featured in a one-page summary of pertinent information (reported by the colleges themselves), including the number of undergraduates and graduate students, popular majors, intercollegiate sports offered, average SAT scores of admitted students, and the number of students who applied, were accepted, and were enrolled last year. Each summary also provides information on application deadlines, required admissions tests, factors considered important in admissions, and at-a-glance information on the school's selectivity, size, and tuition costs. The editors have also written descriptive campus profiles for more than 150 exceptional schools. These profiles capture the flavor of a school, and give information on campus pros and cons (for example, students report that advising at Harvard is subpar, while faculty members stress teaching over research at Mary Washington College; and that on-campus housing is excellent at Kenyon College, while most students live off-campus at the University of Iowa) and interesting campus features, such as Notre Dame's "Touchdown Jesus" mosaic and Stanford's Spanish-style courtyards. Useful essays on choosing a college, devising a strategy to get in, and a special section for international students round out this helpful guide. --C.B. Delaney
