Rating: Summary: Determination always pays off!!! Review: In this book, the twins' friend, Amy Sutton, wants to become a cheerleader. However, Amy isn't popular as the other cheerleading girls, and she faces a lot of harrassment from the cool crowd. However, Amy proves herself and never gives up, and gives it her best at try-outs. This book is a great book in the series and I recommend it! The reader learns a lot about Amy and her friendship with Elizabeth. It's fun and the reader really wants to know the outcome.
Rating: Summary: Who's Choosing Who? Review: One of the most interesting characters in the Sweet Valley Twins series is Amy Sutton - Elizabeth Wakefield's best friend - an independent tomboy who is athletic and intelligent, and who's also prone to buttoning her blouses wrongly and having bad hair days. 12-year-old Amy is an imaginative creation by Francine Pascal, given vibrancy by Jamie Suzanne's writing, and fondly beloved by many readers. Readers of the Sweet Valley High series will hardly recognize the child Amy in her teenage self: as a 16-year-old, Amy Sutton fails to inspire in any way. The sparkle that Suzanne gives to this character in Sweet Valley Twins simply does not exist in the Sweet Valley High series, and the older Amy is disappointingly bland and obnoxious. Choosing Sides, however, tells the story of a very radiant and free-spirited girl, determined to be a cheerleader against all odds. Elizabeth's lack of confidence in her best friend - her over-protectiveness - only makes Amy's dream of being in the Boosters Club that much more complicated.
Choosing Sides unfolds an interesting dynamic between the two best friends who, so far, have managed to share many similarities and many differences without compromising their friendship. Yet almost from the beginning of this story, Elizabeth's insecurity and jealousy are obvious to her readers. The blurb for Choosing Sides is also somewhat misleading: we are lead to believe that it is Elizabeth who has to choose between her feelings for Amy and her feelings for her twin, Jessica - a Booster - who judges Amy's skill in baton twirling to be very little mitigated by her unglamourous appearance. This blurb is misleading, because a closer reading of the story actually reveals that a choosing of sides is only apparent in Elizabeth's mind - that is, in her incorrect perception that Amy's decision to be a Booster also inevitably means a choice between her, Elizabeth, and the Unicorns. Elizabeth's unspoken insecurity and jealousy exists because she fears she will lose Amy's time to cheerleading practice, and Amy's friendship to the influence of the Unicorns, Sweet Valley Middle School's most exclusive and elitist clique, and a juvenile version of a high school sorority group.
Readers applaud Amy for refusing to be bullied into staying away from the Boosters Club, comprised mostly of Unicorn girls. Readers also applaud Amy for her independent course of action even without Elizabeth's true support, amidst her own doubts and fears. Ken Matthews, reduced in size but not in heart in the Sweet Valley Twins series, gives Amy much-needed encouragement as he, too, struggles to make the boys' basketball team. Choosing Sides is a wonderful, uplifting story of triumph over elitism.
