Rating: Summary: Underwhelming Review: I have one word for anyone considering purchasing this book for a daughter or son (or grandchild) going off to college -- don't! Despite the hype around Merkur's book, it's a rather underwhelming compilation of advice. Indeed, I daresay that the typical parent/grandparent would possess more in the way of useful wisdom about how to succeed than one can find in this rather disappointing book.
Rating: Summary: I liked it. Review: This book has useful information for students who have, perhaps, never really learned the art of studying. It covers note-taking (in class, from text and articles), exam preparation, essay writing, and various bits of advice about (mostly) university life. As a mature student who went back to school late, and who never learned the proper way to study (I breezed through high-school by getting As on all my last-minute assignments and never HAD to study), I found this book informative and to-the-point. I'm looking forward to using the new methods I have learned next September.
Rating: Summary: Banal Tripe Review: This book merely restates common sense things you'd know if you had parents. Which is to say that it is as condescending a book as one might imagine. There's nothing new here, and is not worth the time (or, for that matter, the money!). Keep shopping!
