Rating: Summary: Maniac Magee Review:
Jerry Spinelli provides readers with a humorous, almost tall tale, account of courage of a small, dirty boy known as Maniac Magee and the message and change he brings to a racially segregated town called Two Mills.
After Jeffrey Magee's parents were killed in a terrible accident, he is sent to live with his aunt and uncle who have two of everything so they never have to share. Because there is only one Jeffrey, problems soon arise. Jeffrey becomes fed up with his crazy aunt and uncle and runs away to a town called Two Mills. Two Mills is separated into two parts; West End where the white people live and East End where the black people live. While on the West End of Two Mills, Jeffrey befriends a black girl named Amanda Beale and eventually moves in with her and her family. While in Two Mills, Jeffrey earns the nickname Maniac from the series of semi-heroic feats he performs, such as batting with a live frog. Maniac is completely blind to skin color and feels he belongs with the Beale family. But many of the people on the West End of Two Mills do not agree and Maniac leaves his new family.
Maniac begins running from Two Mills and never looks back. He then lives in several unusual places, such as a bull pen, a baseball locker room, and a ramshackle house with two unruly children until he finally returns to his real home with the Beales.
Although this book is told using several elements of tall tales, Jerry Spinelli is able to suspend the reader's disbelief and create realistic characters in realistic settings performing courageous but realistic feats. The very serious subject of racism is lightened with humor mainly through the supporting character's personalities and wild antics.
The Newbery Award winning book, Maniac Magee teaches readers the unimportance of one's skin color and the importance of courage while incorporating humor and exaggeration.
Rating: Summary: Maniac Magee Review: In Maniac Magee, Jerry Spinelli illustrates that racism is a destructive force, which is caused by various backgrounds not knowing or trying to understand another race.
After his parents die, 12-year-old Maniac Magee runs away from his relatives. Maniac Magee finds himself in Two Mills which is separated into West End and East End due to racism. The town seems to be fine with the segregation until Maniac shows up. In both ends of the town, Maniac accomplishes many acts, such as untying Cobble's Knot and winning a race while running backwards.
Although he becomes a star, Maniac is not happy. This brave, kind-hearted, and strong-willed young boy needs more. He needs to help Two Mills come together as one entity and he needs a family to love him.
This Newbery Medal book is filled with hyperbole and humor to entice the reader and to reveal the serious themes.
Rating: Summary: Maniac Magee Review: Jeffery Magee is an eleven year old boy, who has no real family. His parents died in a trolley crash when he was only three! He was then sent to live with his Aunt Dot and Uncle Dan, who were strict Catholic's. Although they wanted to get a divorce, they never did because it was against their religion. Finally, after eight years, Maniac was sick and tired of them fighting, and ran away. Maniac ran to Two Mills, a small city, split into two towns, the East End and the West End. The East End was the blacks and the the West End was the whites. In Two Mills Maniac has some awkward adventures! I thought Jerry Spinelli really made readers not want to put the book down. This book teaches people that there is no difference between blacks and whites, except the actual color. This book teaches me to be brave and to stand up for what is right. Jerry Spinelli connects clues throughout the the book, which really makes people want to read his books. If you are ten to thirteen years old and are looking for a fun, easy reading book, Maniac Magee is definitely perfect for you!
Rating: Summary: Maniac Magee...zooooom! Review: Maniac Magee By Jerry Spinelli Historical fiction/ fictionManiac Magee by Jerry Spinelli, is an outstanding book! It is about a kid-Jeffrey Magee- who lives with his aunt and uncle because his parents died... Jeffrey's uncle and aunt always fight! The child runs away. Jeffrey crosses the white line in the middle of the road of a town he wasn't sure of. After crossing it...boy, was he in trouble! Crossing to the East End of the town- where the "black" people live- was partially why Jeffrey Magee was named Maniac. Read the book to find out the trouble Jeffrey causes and gets into! Maniac Magee can untie any knot and run verrrrry fast. He goes on the East End, when he's supposed to be on the west End- where the "white" people live. Wow! He IS a "maniac" ! I would recommend this book to any one who likes Jerry Spinelli- a great kid's author- or even to anyone who has never even heard of him! Maniac Magee, along with Wringer and The Library Card, have emotional things in them- wheather the emotions are sad, happy, funny or angry. Go on, now! Go read the John Newberry Medal book, Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli!
Rating: Summary: Uh...no... Review: Right...well, I suppose you could say I didn't fully understand the point of this book. A little boy's parents die, he has to live with his feuding Aunt and Uncle and then he runs away one day. When he finds a place to live he runs away. The book is about a boy running for no reason....right...as I said I didn't fully understand the point.
Rating: Summary: thisis a good book Review: This book is yet another example of the fanatical rantings of close minded neo-enviro-libertaria-cons. Maniac Mcgee represents the United States constant 'struggle' to overcome 'facism' in the 'UN'.
Please
None of the useless rantings of this book deserve any real attention.
