Rating: Summary: MUCH MORE THAN A BOOK ON SOCCER! Review: Finally, a book which not only brings sanity back to competitive sports, but to basic human interaction. Nasty and all-too-often violent behavior on and off the playing field is indicative of an ill society, and this book becomes an excellent model for change where it's impact will be the greatest--with the children. The author has the credentials and natural skill to bring important information to light using the game of soccer and a youth soccer team as her vehicle. She is not only a sports enthusiast, but also a mental health professional, and incorporates the best of both worlds together in a book that is long overdue. It is not only a model for coaching, but a paradigm for problem-solving through structure and clarity which the kids seem to hunger for. She guides them gently to the root of a problem, either within the individual or the group, through awareness, and teaches them skills for problem-solving, all the while never letting them forget to have fun with the game. They naturally incorporate these skills (and joy) into their daily lives as evidenced by their parents' comments. Likewise, it is not only a joy to read, but becomes a practical guide for, not only those working with children, but for anyone interested in becoming a little more enlightened through awareness.

Rating: Summary: Concious Coaching: Your Soccer Kids Will Love You for It. Review: Sports education today plays an increasingly powerful role in shaping our children's behavior. Indeed, it is capable of imparting to them a host of character-shaping attributes, including - but not limited to - confidence, discipline, perseverance, assertiveness, decisiveness, insightfulness, humility, fortitude and temperance... all of which empowers them to embrace life's challenges long after they have kicked their last soccer ball or swung a final home run. Conscious Coaching will help you to recognize that, within the confines of sports education (and by extension, any other form of education), the dynamics manifested among coach, parent, and child can either lead to wholly empowering experiences for everyone involved - children especially - or, in stark contrast, result in emotional upheaval for all parties involved, particularly the young and most impressionable. Whether you are a parent, coach or teacher, this book will "coach" you to discern what works in your relationship with others (coach, child and parent) so that you can continue to reinforce those attributes that are positive. Most importantly though, it will guide you to recognize and shape your own behavior within those unfolding dynamics to effect desired outcomes and achieve empowering results. Having said as little, it should be noted also that Conscious Coaching is a quick read; you will love it for its clarity, as much as for its wisdom.
