Rating: Summary: not our style of self defense Review: As a martial artist with 20 years of experience in various martial arts, I found this book to be an outstanding reference for training in in martial arts. There are effective drills to develop speed, strength, precision, sensitivity and conditioning, all important for success in martial arts. Additional drills cover sparring, weapons, miltiple opponents and attitude, as well as discussions on reality and the offensive levels of combat. Detailed explanations help the reader understand the concept and reality behind the drills which is crucial to performing them properly - many books give drills without delving into the why's and wherefores of their purpose. This book should rank right up there with the best JKD books around and belong on every serious martial artist's bookshelf.
Rating: Summary: not our style of self defense Review: Battle Master is not our style of self defense, This is why I found it so helpful in expanding my self defense techniques outside of the traditional korean arts. My instructor always stated that "it was a good thing to look into other martial arts and see what they offer, to know only what I teach you would limit you, to learn from any opportunity is growth". I would highly recommend this book to all martial artists.
Rating: Summary: Reviewed by a Student of David Elwood Review: I'm a student of David Elwood (Total Approach JKD in NJ.) The Battle Master book is a self defense manual which uses the JKD philosophy to get there. If the drills look strange from other JKD systems...well, that's what JKD is all about: Adapt and use whatever works! Dave's techniques do not use the exagerated movements of traditional systems. They are straight attacks and defenses causing maximum damage in a very small timeframe. Dave's been a student of the martial arts for over 20 some odd years (10 years under Leo Fong: a student of Bruce Lee.) He's studied with every major artist on the east coast, and many on the west coast. Dave's the type of guy who doesn't watch a street fight with interest, he pulls out a pad and takes notes. He's a good guy, and his book is worth the time he took to write it. Recommended.
Rating: Summary: poor Review: This is a very poor book on drilling techniques, JKD, or for that matter self-defense. I would not recommend this book to any one serious about JKD.
