Summary: A classic...
Review: ...but do check out the current classic work by the living perfected master, Yogiraj Gurunath Siddhanath - Wings To Freedom. Gurunath is of the Himalayan lineage of the great Nath Yogis. A born Siddha, he was transformed after His deep and personal experience with Shiv Goraksha Nath Babaji, the same Babaji referred to in Autobiography of a Yogi. So if you are left hungry for more after reading this book by Yogananda, buy a copy of Wings to Freedom and continue your journey on the path to Self-Realization.

Summary: Spiritually rejuvenating
Review: From reading this book I am now fully convinced of the power of praying, meditating and having faith in God. This is a very great and power book and it is just a vast reservoir of undeniable wisdom. Reading this book is a very rewarding, life changing experience that will stay with you for probably the rest of your life.

Paramhansa is a great author who backs up everything he says with specific scientific evidence, making this a book that even atheistist can appreciate. The accounts given in this book can at times seem fantastical and utterly unbelievable but as is explained, yoga opens up the soul to unlimited experiences and impossible things are proven very real and attainable.

I would strongly urge all readers to read this book, it will prove to be very fulfilling and worthwhile.

Summary: Get the Ben Kingsley recording too!
Review: Hi! If you read the text and listen to the tapes all night using a dual deck autoreverse tape deck, I think you will somehow connect with Yoganada's spirit!

Summary: Is Yogananda A Lier?
Review: I am not a follower of Yogananda's organization or of his teachings, as I don't like to follow anyone or anything, but I love Yogananda because I can testify to most of his own experiences simply because I too have had the same mystical experiences.

This book is great. It tells of a unique spiritual experience of a highly developed soul.

Yogananda did not want to come to the west. His guru and destiny forced him. No true master wants to publicize himself because he knows full well that there are millions of ignorant people out there, who have never had a spiritual experience, and they are waiting to crucify him. Masters sacrifice themselves when they come out into public view.

In the book he recounted numerous stories that he had heard from other people. Though I don't accept some of the anecdotes-as told to Yogananda-as being totally factual, I do accept Yogananda's own words as factual. I think that he himself is incapable of lying.

Some people will judge him through the actions of some of his followers-most of whom are now squabbling over his name and his work-but if you have had any truly deep spiritual experiences, and especially, akin to the ones Yogananda had, you will see the man for what he was: A true sage and yogic master.

Another thing, I've noticed that those who accuse Yogananda of wrongdoing are always quoting some secondhand account. Something they heard or read that another person said that Yogananda did, I have yet to see someone step up to the plate and say "yeah me, I was done wrong by him".

Personally, I think all these accusations stink of hogwash and may even be spun by jealousy more than anything else.

Aside from the fact that Yogananda was a great master (master of himself that is, as are all true masters), he was also a lowly immigrant from a poor country who came to the U.S. and found incredible success. That can be a source of hatred by more than a few malcontents.

Summary: Fascinating and Inspiring
Review: I have read this book several times over the years, but few stories that stuck with me and which I re-read countless times are the stories about the Trailanga Swami and about Babaji materializing the Palace.

This book uniquely brought to the west the wisdom and wonders from India. Yogananda certainly had some wonderful and amazing lineage of teachers begining with Babaji, then onto Lahiri Mahasaya and Sri Yukteswar.

Stories and teachings from this book are a source of permanent inspiration for me. If you haven't yet - by all means read this book - it is filled with infinite wisdom.

Summary: The original 1946 edition will win your heart
Review: I've read Yogananda's Autobiography of a Yogi many times, but it wasn't until I read the original 1946 edition by Crystal Clarity, Publishers that I stumbled across many of Yogananda's original teachings that have been erased by the Self-Realization Fellowship Publishers long after his death. In the 1946 original edition, you can read about Yogananda's aims and ideals for world brotherhood colonies as a solution to societal ills, his desire to spread "kriya yoga" to all sincere truthseekers, and his many powerful words which echo his love for all mankind and ALL people, despite their religious affiliation. There is a special vibration in the original that you won't find in later editions. Read it yourself, and see for yourself if you don't somehow "feel different" reading Yogananda's own words, un-tainted by any additional hyperbole meant to "rope you in" to any particular organization. Yogananda's words are non-sectarian, universal, meant for any and ALL OF US. This book will change your life and give you hope, no matter where in the world you live. I cannot recommend any other book that expresses so completely the secrets of the universe, life, death, and reincarnation so beautifully and truthfully.

Summary: Damaged goods
Review: My gripe is not with the book, but with Geminibooks, who supplied the book. In their description they failed to mention that the book had a picture cut out of one page, which deleted the text around that page and on the back of that page. Although I did not spend a lot on the book, I would have spent more to ensure that I got the complete work.

Summary: A SPIRITUAL REVELATION and Modern Legacy.
Review: Paramahansa Yogananda, a modern 20th century Yoga Master, who is living example of all that he wrote about, shows the reader a new and balanced approach to the spiritual life. He makes it clear, practical and sensible as well as appealing. You won't be able to put it down till it's finished. The recent editions with the orange covers, are His most up to date editions, which also includes the 49th chapter, and enhancemets made by Him and his appointed editors in chief before and after 1952. These most recent editions also give the reader a very complete view to Yogananda's final meanings.

This truly remarkable autobiography will help the reader understand the purpose of life and how to reach true fulfillment.

This work gives the reader an excellent overview of comparative religion and how to appreciate all true prophets and creeds.

Paramahansa Yogananda established the Self-Realization Fellowship to represent Babaji's line of Masters and disseminate his teachings and Kriya Yoga world-wide.

Also recommended: "God Talks With Arjuna", see Pages 426 & 427 where Yogananda makes the above declaration clear. --This text refers to the paperback edition of this title

Summary: A WORK OF FICTION
Review: The panegyrics stinks.

Individualistic biases and notions of the famed author-guru built and sustained VERY BIASED and very romantic notions that later cramped and hampered a realistic outlook on the nation India, Indians, and *having sex* - which is not specially advocated in the book - and far, far less among monks and nuns that publish it. Said a lay members wife once about Yogananda, "He has destroyed my marriage."

The work carries with it some negative effects.

Summary: This book touched my heart.
Review: This book touched my heart. Amazing that this book has stood the test of time. It has the uncanny ability to transform lives of even skeptics. Parmahamsa Yogananada has fused Hinduism with and Christianity in this book thus telling the world, "Nobody has any monopoly on truth or God." Truth & God are universal. Yogananda is completely genuine, a true lover of God and humanity and all life. Words cannot describe the beauty of this book. This book can have the power to change your life. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is in search after truth. Why am I highly recommending this book? Since this book does not promote any particular religion. It only teaches us methods to mature spiritually. Kriya Yoga which Yoganananda is teaching in this book has no connection with any religion. It is a very scientific, logical method of maturing spiritually and attaining self-realization.
