Rating: Summary: Definitive Photographic History of Black Baseball Review: The Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) awarded Phil Dixon's first major work its Casey Award for the Best Baseball Book of 1993. It is a well-deserved honor. This book is an essential text for baseball and social historians. Anyone who has studied this area understands the dearth of information and the lack of photographic documentation of this important institution. Dixon unearthed a treasure trove of previously unpublished Negro Leagues photos, which are reason enough to reccommend this book. But instead of falling back on well-worn research compiled in the 1970s to support these images, Dixon also casts light on subject areas overlooked by other researchers. His images from the late 19th and Early 20th centuries are particulalry striking.
