Rating: Summary: A Wonderful Escape Review: In a time of real-world turmoil, this book offers a wonderful escape into the alternate reality that is the world of baseball. The writing is wry, funny, insightful. Mayer knows his baseball inside and out -- but he is also wise about life. Some of his best tales wander far from the ball field, into love, fatherhood and other national pastimes. But there is always a subliminal connection to the game. Like a tight ball game, the book gets better and better as it goes along. A great read.
Rating: Summary: Very good read Review: Robert (Bobby)Mayer does a very good job of evoking thoughts of how baseball intertwines so much with life. While reading different parts of the book, I felt like he had read my mind while writing it. With his take on subjects such as the American League, the designated hitter, fields of grass, knee-high socks, football vs. baseball, etc., I found Mr. Mayer to mirror my views. Mayer uses humor effectively throughout the book and is very adept at putting feeling into his writing. I highly recommend this book, even for the non-baseball fan.
