Summary: A Must-Have Book!
Review: Every Black woman living in this country needs to have this book in their possession immediately! This book will indeed explain everything you wanted to know about life but were afraid to ask a man. Thank you Michael Porter for laying out the facts as raw as you did. This is a book that will save your life and enlighten you to progress independently. I couldn't put it down! It's an easy read but it's straight up with no chaser! I highly recommend this book to my sistas out there who want to know the real deal!

Summary: Expert examination of a very real problem
Review: Hooked On Hoops: Understanding Black Youths' Blind Devotion To Basketball by Kevin McNutt (Founder and Executive Director of Sports Enhancements Inc. - a non-profit company devoted to educating and exposing youth to jobs and careers within the sports industry) is a sobering and expert examination of a very real problem facing African-American communities today - that of overemphasis on athletic sports, particularly basketball, to such a degree that young athletes do not adequately prepare themselves for other possible life plans, resulting in an extensively disproportionate black college athletes failing to graduate with a degree. Hooked On Hoops is not a unilateral denouncement of basketball; it is a powerful study of ingrained social attitudes and perceptions, emphasizing the need to encourage balance in athlete's lives. Hooked On Hoops is very highly recommended reading, especially for the parents and coaches of aspiring youngsters of any ethnicity or background who think to use sports in general, and basketball in particular, as the basis for establishing and financing their life goals and expectations.

Review: Mr. Porter is dope. ALL will benefit from his insight and voice. His writes in the tradition of Jawanza Kunjufu and is grounded in the works of bell hooks, M. Ani, Amos Wilson, Angela Davis and F. Cress Welsing. The best thing about this book is that it is written in plain english, explaining all the sociological and political jargon and breaking it down for all to understand!

I do believe the book has been mistitled. Maybe he meant to call it the conspiracy to destroy the Black (or African) family. I say this because he makes it clear that the black family's existence is dependant upon not only the freedom of the black man, but is contingent upon the self determination and freedom of the black woman. He is definately gangsta and no holds barred in his convictions but sound and logical in his suggestions for black women (and all women of color)! He is clear on the source of the problem (and it's not black men...ha!)and even addresses other people of color and white women to really review their existence and look at the TRUE source of the problem so they can be free as well.

Now Now, do not be mislead........Although this is a necessity for all African people, particularly those in America, all people ready for liberation will cherish this piece.

Buy this as a gift to all those who think and who need to think!
