Summary: Mr. Vause captures the spirit of climbing and adventure
Review: After reading Mr. Vauses' book my understanding of why people climb broadend and deepened. I finished his book with this thought: "people climb ... not to defy death ... but to affirm life." Mr. Vause researched his subject well to cull the best. The selections of the writers he chose wrote well and clearly, regardless of the century. As I read the selections, I felt ... yes that is what I feel when I too am climbing or on an adventure. I recommend the book to those who do not understand the need to climb and want to understand, to the adventurer, to the one who desires to be a climber ... and to you since you have read this far. Enjoy. Get out and seek your mountain to climb and begin ...

A few other reads I have enjoyed and recommend include: Water: A Natural History, Mount Analogue, Free Play, poems by Mary Oliver and Gary Snyder, Maurice Herzog's Annapurna and Arlene Blumes book about her experience on the same mountain.
