Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Very Helpful Guide
Review: I've been hiking in the Santa Monica Mountains for most of my life, and found this guide helpful in finding many trails and trailheads that I never knew existed. This book is a great starting point in planning hikes, but the trail maps are too cruely drawn and vague to warrant taking it on the trail. Never the less, after reading the description of the trail, and familiarizing yourself with the map, you should be safe. Most of the hikes are pretty tame.

The back of the book is a detailed guide to the Backbone Trail, which is a treasure to Los Angeles County. Get the most out of the Santa Monica Mountains and buy this guide.

Summary: The must-have guide for hikers in L.A.
Review: If you like to hike and live in L.A., this is the one guide that you truly must have. Most people know of the more popular areas and trails in the Santa Monica mountains but you will be amazed at the sheer number of maps, trails, and descriptions contained in this book. No longer will you be forced to tramp around on the same old trail with hundreds of other people.

Perhaps the best features of each trip listed are the total elevation gain and estimated hiking time, both of which save you from taking the wrong people on the wrong trail.

Summary: Great for finding new trails
Review: This book has been a wonderful resource for finding new trails that we never knew about, practically right in our own backyard. This book really is extremely comprehensive. The only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is that on occasion, he doesn't give enough details when giving directions (either driving to the trail, or in details about the hike itself).
