Rating: Summary: A book for any level.... Review: There are very few books that i take down from my personal collection to read over and over again. Shifflett's book is the most dog eared book i own to date. Not just pictures of masters doing what they do best. But straight forward advice and help for everyone, including that rare breed amongst us, the solo aikido practioner. In fact, the section on verbal aikido is used by me on a daily basis being stuck in a metal tube at 42,000ft where i have to play everything from mother to nurse to cop. it has been an invaluable tool in expanding my true understanding of aikido practice and i use it with the uninitiated as a survival tool for our workplace. Concise, easy to understand, and always applicable. A must buy for any serious aikidoka.
Rating: Summary: Excellent book Review: This is a winner. It is understandable yet deep. I am new to Aikido, having been practicing for about 5 months and have read several books on the subject. This is one of the best. It is written with humor and intelligence. I may even buy a copy to loan to others in my dojo who are starting to learn Aikido.
Rating: Summary: One of the most useful martial books I own. Review: This is the first book for which I've been moved to write a review.I found Shifflett's work to be the very first successful 'all-in-one' books ever written for the martial ways. In it she presents valuable information for both the beginner and the beginning instructor. In fact, when one considers that even seasoned instructors may need reminding of that which is important to the beginner, this book indeed has something for all of us. "Aikido: Exercises for Teaching and Training" presents the reader with answers to frequently asked questions, physics lessons, myth-busting, some "how-to", and even some Aikido for everyday life. This information is drawn from many styles and so some may find some concepts foreign (Ki Testing, for example) but that is part of the beauty: It's non partisan, plain ol' Aikido, and it's presented in an easy to read, light-hearted manner. Interspersed among the pearls of Shifflet's aiki-wisdom I found many contributions from the denziens of the Aikido-L mailing list, a veritable who's-who of Aikido knowledge. These quips and quotes are worth the cover price themselves. I unreservedly recommend this book both as an invaluable aid for the beginner and as a worthwhile addition to anybody's Aikido library. It has earned a permanent place in my bedside table.
