Allen, a New York sportswriter who covered Mantle's career from beginning to end, captures a sense of the excitement that pervaded New York baseball in the '50s and early '60s, and how much of it was centered on the broad beam of Mantle's shoulders. His portrait of Mantle's post-baseball life is quite poignant in its details of how much his fans demanded from his legend to the end.
