Rating: 5 stars
Summary: A juvenile biography of America's best female soccer player
Review: I was surprised how little I knew about Mia Hamm, such as the fact her real name is Mariel Margaret Hamm, until I read this excellent juvenile biography by Carl Emerson aimed at younger readers. After all, we are talking about one of the most famous female athletes in the country. Emerson does a nice job of telling how Hamm fell in love with the game of soccer when her father was stationed in Italy and following her storied career up to when the U.S. won the World Cup championship in 1999. This book pays as much attention to Hamm's training and dedication to the sport as it does to listing her accomplishments. The book is half-filled with full color photographs, which explains in part the relatively high price. Still, this volume works very well as young reader's first look at the life of this soccer superstar. This is definitely one of the better efforts in the Sports Superstars series, which is a very uneven collection.
