Rating: Summary: This is the Holy Grail of skateboarding. Review: After over 25 years of skateboarding, I finally learned the history of the sport I still enjoy today. I just wish this information was available earlier in my life. I can't help but think that it would have changed the direction of my life [probably more towards skating]. It can only enlighten other skaters - old and young, as well as any non-skater. This book is both a bible and an encyclopedia, under one cover. At the age of 39, married with a child and self employed, I can't see a reason to stop skating. And this book has added fuel to the fire that excites me every time I ride a skateboard. These days I mostly ride longboards with a group of about 15 other skaters - ages ranging from 16 to 48. I hope Mr. Brooke amends the book as the history of skateboarding continues to unfold.
Rating: Summary: Additional Info Review: After reviewing the comments on the site, it would appear that most people are pleased with this book. I had great time writing the book and the industry people and current and former pros were wonderful to work with. If you like the book or if you didn't like the book, I'd still like to hear from you. I would love your suggestions and comments. Reach me at mbrooke@interlog.com. As I enter my 24th year of skating, the comments hit home the idea that skateboarding really is in the blood.Cheers, Michael Brooke
Rating: Summary: The encyclopedia of skateboarding! Review: All books on skateboarding from now on will be compared to this one! Michael has brought together stories, facts, and terrific historical perspectives on this dynamic, exciting sport. The technological evolution of the equipement, the diversity of the personalities, the achievements, the attitude...it all comes through in this great collection of stories and photos that show skateboarding as it has been over the last forty years. No sports library will be complete with out "The Concrete Wave". If skateboarders world wide only have one book in their library, then this should be it. Don't hesitate to add this outstanding volume to your collection. Five stars is not enough...! Now we need a couple more volumes from Michael to add to this one...
Rating: Summary: a REAL look at skateboarding by someone who skates! Review: Finally a book about skateboarding that is actually written by someone who skates. The forword written by Rodney Mullen and the Alva interview also adds to the books credibility. Nice job.
Rating: Summary: A personal look at the sport that is also a way of life. Review: From the article in details I knew that this was the book to have for any respectable skater. And bless Alva for still scootin on the stick. I am 25 and still skating after 13 years and he is an inspiration to us all.
Rating: Summary: Great book, covers all ends of the spectrum Review: From the Preface to the Conclusion, this book is incredible. If you're new to skateboarding, it'll depict the sports roots from its humble beginnings, and if you're a "skategeezer", it'll bring back some memories. Great book altogether, it makes you just wanna get up, grab your skate, and head out to the local park. It's intense, the interviews are thorough, and the perspective is a key factor to this book's (*goodness*)
Rating: Summary: A book long wished for. Skaters every where should be proud. Review: I 've been looking for this book ever since I read my best friends copy. It's cool to learn about the sport that I participate in and truly love. SK8 4 LIFE
Rating: Summary: This book captures the essence of why I've skated for 20 yrs Review: I got Skateboarder mag, until they flamed out and went "all purpose" with Action Now... then Thrasher became my staple. I skated crappy Val Surf boards, decent Sims boards, hip Alva and DogTown models... even skated a Jay Adams Z-Flex... now I surf my Sector nine. This book is the ROOTS book or the CIVIL WAR series for our much-misunderstood sport. Skate hard or go home.
Rating: Summary: Relive the past - learn your roots ! Review: I have been skating for 33 years now and have been waiting about 15 years for a book like this ! What could have turned into a book just of stodgy lists of events has turned out to be a wealth of knowledge which is presented in a very readable way. The pictures throughout are excellent and will bring back many a memory. The history of the whole scene is as good as we are going to get (there will always be disagreements as to who and where etc) and is backed up by testimonial by people who were there ! What has surprised me about the book is the way non skaters pick it up and browse through it with interest. This is probably due to the way the book is formatted. The layout makes it easy to pick up and browse, the graphics are appealing to all. I can't recommend this book enough, apart from the fact there is no other book to compare it to it will be a very hard book to beat ! If you are an older skater you'll spend hours saying " I had one of those" , " I skated there," etc. If you are an ex skater it'll make you want to pick up a longboard and start again. If you are a younger skater it'll give you a sense of where your roots come from. If you are just someone who picks the book up you'll find it hard to put down !
Rating: Summary: BAD, weak, worthless, good for nothing except to throw out Review: I have seen this new book called "DYSFUNCTIONAL" and it's the skateboard book of it's culture and art and creative genius we've all been waiting for. Not this baby drivel from CanaDUH! the concrete wave was a big dissapointment to us here . . .
